The impact of face-to-face social exclusion on university students' interpersonal cooperation behavior: a hyperscanning study based on fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on social exclusion adopt virtual paradigms focusing on unilateral responses, while neglecting real-world face-to-face interaction and its neural basis. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning allows recording of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during dyadic interaction, providing a novel approach for investigating interpersonal cooperation. METHODS: This study recruited 24 dyads of college students randomly assigned to social exclusion and inclusion groups. Using fNIRS hyperscanning combined with a face-to-face rejection paradigm and th

Association between participation in social network service groups and offline social networks.

AIM: Although some previous studies have suggested using a social networking service (SNS) to create and maintain offline social networks among younger generations, whether similar outcomes would apply to middle-aged and older individuals is uncertain. This study aimed to examine the association between participation in groups via SNS and greater offline social networks among middle-aged and older individuals. METHODS: We conducted a web-based questionnaire survey on 3106 respondents from September to October 2021 among members of "the Shumi-to Club," an SNS in Japan. They indicated the numbe

Serving Differently: Pioneering the Inclusion of Autism in the Greek Military.

Autism spectrum disorders are typically considered a disqualifying factor for military service due to their high demands on the environment. This case study describes the implementation of a social skills training program for a military candidate with Asperger's syndrome. The intervention employed four strategies: Social Stories, which used structured scenarios to teach appropriate social responses; Social Autopsy, which analyzed real-life interactions to identify strengths and areas for improvement; Role-Playing, which provided guided practice of social interactions; and a Cardboard Game, des…

Aurally impressed, yet not more stressed: On the relationship between audiovisual realism, social anxiety, and presence in a virtual social stress scenario.

Binaural auralizations can create spatial hearing impressions that closely resemble real sound sources, enhancing immersion and realism in virtual environments. Although social interactions often involve emotional responses such as stress (e.g., during a job interview), the interplay between emotion and binaural auralizations in virtual social interactions remains underexplored. Therefore, we investigated the effects of audiovisual realism in a virtual social stress scenario based on the Trier Social Stress Test. Acoustic realism was manipulated between subjects using head-tracked binaural aur…

Social adjustment experiences of adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe the experience of social adjustment of adolescents with Tourette syndrome in Taiwan. BACKGROUND: Although Tourette syndrome is a non-life-threatening disease, the inherent difficulties in controlling tics and comorbidities can cause long-term physical and psychological issues, as well as social maladjustment among adolescents. Good social adjustment can promote mental health among adolescents. Currently, it is not clear how adolescents with Tourette syndrome can self-adjust and maintain harmonious social interaction with others. DESIGN: Descriptiv…

Measuring associations among British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic: Testing a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA).

Social identification and group norms have been identified as key social psychological determinants of engagement in protective public health behaviours, such as social distancing, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the research tests the utility of a Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)-which proposes reciprocal, interactive associations among self-group, group-behaviour and self-behaviour concepts-for the measurement of British national identification, group norms and social distancing behaviour at t

A novel ecological approach to assess theory of Mind and social norm understanding for social cognition phenotyping in multiple sclerosis.

Social cognition (SC) impairment is a hallmark of the cognitive profile in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). However, there is a still no consensus on recommended measures for SC phenotyping in this clinical population, limiting our understanding of underlying mechanism and the development of targeted intervention. This study evaluated the suitability of the Edinburgh Social Cognition test (ESCoT), a novel ecologically valid tool assessing affective (ToMA) and cognitive (ToMc) Theory of Mind, as well as interpersonal (SNUINTER) and intrapersonal (SNUINTRA) social norm understanding, for SC phenotyping

The impact of environmental factors on public engagement on WeChat in China's national parks- a socio-cognitive analysis.

Based on social cognitive theory and engagement hierarchy structure, this study aims to investigate how environmental factors influence public interaction behavior on WeChat, the official social media platform used by China's national parks (NPs). Using monthly panel data from July 2018 to December 2023, this research employs advanced econometric models such as two-way fixed effects, Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV), and Difference Generalized Method of Moments (D-GMM) estimators to analyze the complex dynamics of public interaction and messaging. The results highlight the significant posit

Neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion disrupts maternal behavior in rats: An animal model of schizophrenia.

Although individuals with schizophrenia typically present deficits in social interaction, little is known about the quality of their parent-infant interactions. In the present study, we assessed the behavioral effects of neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion (nVHL) in female rats (nVHL is known to induce schizophrenia-like deficits in males). Sexually naïve adult nVHL or sham female rats received cognitive and social tests, and their maternal behavior was observed in independent groups of adult nVHL and sham rats on postpartum days 2, 6, and 12. Compared to Sham females, naïve nVHL rats displaye…

Dopaminergic modulation of affective and social deficits induced by prenatal glucocorticoid exposure.

Prenatal stress or exposure to elevated levels of glucocorticoids (GCs) can impair specific neurobehavioral circuits leading to alterations in emotional processes later in life. In turn, emotional deficits may interfere with the quality and degree of social interaction. Here, by using a comprehensive behavioral approach in combination with the measurement of ultrasonic vocalizations, we show that in utero GC (iuGC)-exposed animals present increased immobility in the forced swimming test, pronounced anhedonic behavior (both anticipatory and consummatory), and an impairment in social interaction…

Aberrant neural computation of social controllability in nicotine-dependent humans.

Social controllability, or the ability to exert control during social interactions, is crucial for optimal decision-making. Inability to do so might contribute to maladaptive behaviors such as smoking, which often takes place in social settings. Here, we examined social controllability in nicotine-dependent humans as they performed an fMRI task where they could influence the offers made by simulated partners. Computational modeling revealed that smokers under-estimated the influence of their actions and self-reported a reduced sense of control, compared to non-smokers. These findings were repl…

Try to find me: social anxiety and peer first impressions.

Following initial interactions, some people are less willing to pursue ongoing contact with socially anxious individuals than with those who are not socially anxious. To better understand this process, we conducted two studies that examined peers' first impressions of target individuals. Unacquainted individuals (N=104 and 114) participated in round robin, unstructured interactions in groups of 3 to 10 and then rated each partner and themselves on items reflecting the Big Five personality dimensions. The ratings were analyzed according to Biesanz's (2010) social accuracy model of interpersonal

The Effects of Maternal Mirroring on the Development of Infant Social Expressiveness: The Case of Infant Cleft Lip.

Parent-infant social interactions start early in development, with infants showing active communicative expressions by just two months. A key question is how this social capacity develops. Maternal mirroring of infant expressions is considered an important, intuitive, parenting response, but evidence is sparse in the first two months concerning the conditions under which mirroring occurs and its developmental sequelae, including in clinical samples where the infant's social expressiveness may be affected. We investigated these questions by comparing the development of mother-infant interaction…

Humans do not "play fair" with social robots: Unequal task sharing in an attentional task.

Using artificial agents, such as ChatGPT, to support everyday tasks has become commonplace, yet little research has examined offloading of attentionally demanding tasks to artificial agents. Prior work investigating how humans offload attentional demands to algorithms and other humans found that people prefer an equal split of attentional demands when interacting with humans but not when interacting with algorithms. This raises the question of how offloading decisions are made when interacting with algorithms embodied in social robots with human-like characteristics: Would they treat them like

How the discrepancy between expectation and outcome influences expectation change in relation to depressive symptoms - Results from four experimental studies.

BACKGROUND: Traditional associative learning models and their clinical applications suggest that the greater the discrepancy between expectations and outcome, the greater the adjustment of expectations. Other frameworks, however, propose a "tipping point", above which the discrepancy is so large that the source of information is considered unreliable, resulting in reduced expectation change. METHODS: To test these competing predictions, we performed four experiments in which participants were provided with five levels of positivity/negativity in two different contexts: social interactions and…

Associations Between Childhood Area-Level Social Fragmentation, Maladaptation to School, and Social Functioning Among Healthy Youth and Those at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Although studies have identified social fragmentation as an important risk factor for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, it is unknown whether it may impact social functioning. This study investigates whether social fragmentation during childhood predicts maladaptation to school as well as social functioning during childhood and adulthood. STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study. Participants included adults at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and healthy comparisons (HC).
