Microbial Volatile 3-Methyl-1-Butanol Enhances Stomatal Closure and Salt Stress Tolerance via Ethylene and Jasmonate Pathways in Arabidopsis.

Microbial biostimulants can be applied to reliably improve crop productivity and quality. One such biostimulant is 3-methyl-1-butanol (3MB), a microbial volatile compound released by various plant growth-promoting microbes, which has gained recent attention due to its ability to promote plant growth and enhance stress tolerance. Previous studies have shown that 3MB induces stomatal closure and enhances salt stress tolerance in plants; however, its mode of action in these processes remains poorly understood. In this study, 6-day-old Arabidopsis seedlings were fumigated with 3MB (1 mg L-1) for 3

Rapid Protection from COVID-19 in Nonhuman Primates Vaccinated Intramuscularly but Not Intranasally with a Single Dose of a Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Based Vaccine.

The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus (CoV) disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to exert a significant burden on health care systems worldwide. With limited treatments available, vaccination remains an effective strategy to counter transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent discussions concerning vaccination strategies have focused on identifying vaccine platforms, number of doses, route of administration, and time to reach peak immunity against SARS-CoV-2. Here, we generated a single-dose, fast-acting vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-based vaccine derived from th…

Vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV) infects keratinocytes and is restricted to lesion sites and local lymph nodes in the bovine, a natural host.

Inoculation of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV) by skin scarification of the coronary-band in cattle, a natural host of VSNJV, resulted in vesicular lesions and 6-8 log(10) TCID(50) increase in skin virus titers over a 72 h period. Virus infection was restricted to the lesion sites and lymph nodes draining those areas but no virus or viral RNA was found in the blood or in 20 other organs and tissues sampled at necropsy. Scarification of flank skin did not result in lesions or a significant increase in viral titer indicating that viral clinical infection is restricted to skin inocu…

A randomized, controlled clinical trial of the homeopathic medication TRAUMEEL S in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced stomatitis in children undergoing stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Stomatitis is a common consequence of chemotherapy and a condition for which there is little effective treatment. Although the management of patients with other chemotherapy-related toxicities has improved in recent years, the incidence of stomatitis is increasing because of more intensive treatment and is often a dose limiting factor in chemotherapy. The authors assessed the efficacy of a homeopathic remedy, TRAUMEEL S(R), in the management of chemotherapy-induced stomatitis in children undergoing bone marrow transplantation. METHODS: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blin…

Whole Genome Characterization of Lumpy Skin Disease Virus and Bovine Papular Stomatitis Virus Detected in Cattle During the 2024-2025 Outbreaks in Tunisia.

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is an economically significant viral disease of cattle, widely prevalent across Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan regions. In 2024, Tunisia reported its first outbreak. Understanding the genetic characteristics of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) and related poxviruses is critical for surveillance and control. Twenty-nine samples from 26 suspected cases were screened for LSDV using qPCR, followed by a High-Resolution Multiplex Melting (HRM) assay. Three representative samples, two LSDV-positive and one bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV)-positive, were subjected to…

Effectiveness of low-level laser therapy in reducing pain score and healing time of recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common chronic inflammatory oral disease that negatively impacts the quality of life. Current therapies aim to reduce pain and healing process yet challenges such as rapid loss due to salivary flushing in topical drugs and adverse effects due to prolonged use of systemic medications require further notice. Low-level laser therapy is reported with immediate pain relief and faster healing thus preserving the potential for optimal treatment modalities. This review critically analyses and summarizes the effectiveness of LLLT in reducing pain sco…

Preparation, antioxidant, antibacterial, and in vivo evaluation of pomegranate flower extract nanofibers based on thiolated chitosan and thiolated gelatin for treating aphthous stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common condition that manifests as ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa. In this study, bilayer, mucoadhesive nanofibers loaded with pomegranate flower extract (PFE) were prepared using thiolated gelatin (TGel) and thiolated chitosan (TCS) as the active layer and drug-free polycaprolactone (PCL) as the backing layer. Gelatin (Gel) and chitosan (CS) were successfully thiolated (proven by Ellman's assay, solubility, 1H NMR, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD) and electrospun into active nanofibrous layers with a diameter of 356.9 nm. The in vitro release …

Mean platelet volume as a predictor in the differentiation of Behçet's disease from recurrent aphthous stomatitis - A single centre, prospective, case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent oral ulcers (ROUs) are the most common disorder of the oral cavity in the community. The most challenging issue for the clinician to deal with in the diagnosis is to distinguish whether ROUs are associated with primarily Behçet's disease (BD). We aimed to investigate whether hemogram parameters contribute to reinforce BD suspicion in the differential diagnosis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and BD. METHODS: A total of 260 participants were recruited from the dermatology department in this single-centre, prospective, case-control study. Participants meeting elig…

Insight into the expression of RIG-I-like receptors in human third trimester placentas following ex vivo cytomegalovirus or vesicular stomatitis virus infection.

A viral infection is detected through germline-encoded pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) leading to the production of interferons (IFNs) and proinflammatory cytokines. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I)-like receptors (RLRs) in response to viral infection and the selected cytokine responses in the human term placenta. Placental villi and decidual explants were infected with human cytomegalovirus (CMV) or vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and cultured ex vivo to study viral infection. To evaluate DDX58 (RIG-I), IFIH1 (MDA5),…

Performance of recently proposed periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome criteria in a region endemic for familial Mediterranean fever.

The periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is an auto-inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent episodes of fever accompanied by aphthosis, cervical adenitis, and pharyngitis. Diagnosis of PFAPA could be challenging due to clinic overlap with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). An international consensus has been established recently, to define a new set of classification criteria for PFAPA syndrome. We aimed to evaluate the performance of recently proposed PFAPA criteria, to assess their utility in FMF regions. Patients diagnosed with …

Efficient Production of Human Norovirus-Specific IgY in Egg Yolks by Vaccination of Hens with a Recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Expressing VP1 Protein.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is responsible for more than 95% of outbreaks of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Despite major efforts, there are no vaccines or effective therapeutic interventions against this virus. Chicken immunoglobulin Y (IgY)-based passive immunization has been shown to be an effective strategy to prevent and treat many enteric viral diseases. Here, we developed a highly efficient bioreactor to generate high titers of HuNoV-specific IgY in chicken yolks using a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus expressing HuNoV capsid protein (rVSV-VP1) as an antigen. We first …

Subacute infection with temperature-sensitive vesicular stomatitis virus mutant G41 in the central nervous system of mice. II. Immunofluorescent, morphologic, and immunologic studies.

Inoculation of three- to four-week-old BALB/c mice with temperature-sensitive (ts) vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) mutant G41 produced a subacute neurological disease mainly localized in the spinal cord. Meningitis and diffuse microglial infiltration of the anterior horns of the spinal cord were seen starting six days after infection when neuronal degenerative changes could be seen. Infection of neurons was demonstrated by immunofluorescence microscopy five days after infection. Two to three weeks after infection, loosening of the neuropil was evident due to neuronal dropout, and the mononucl…

Distinct role of AtCuAOβ- and RBOHD-driven H2O2 production in wound-induced local and systemic leaf-to-leaf and root-to-leaf stomatal closure.

Polyamines (PAs) are ubiquitous low-molecular-weight aliphatic compounds present in all living organisms and essential for cell growth and differentiation. The developmentally regulated and stress-induced copper amine oxidases (CuAOs) oxidize PAs to aminoaldehydes producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ammonia. The Arabidopsis thaliana CuAOβ (AtCuAOβ) was previously reported to be involved in stomatal closure and early root protoxylem differentiation induced by the wound-signal MeJA via apoplastic H2O2 production, suggesting a role of this enzyme in water balance, by modulating xylem-dependent

Phospholipase Dδ and H2S increase the production of NADPH oxidase-dependent H2O2 to respond to osmotic stress-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Osmotic stress is one of the main stresses that seriously affects the survival of plants, destroying normal cell activities, and potentially leading to plant death. Phospholipase D (PLD), a major lipid hydrolase, hydrolyzes membrane phospholipids to produce phosphatidic acid (PA) and responds to many abiotic stresses. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emerges as the third gaseous signaling molecule involved in the complex network of signaling events. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a crucial role as a signaling molecule in plant development and growth, and responds to various abiotic and biotic stresses.
