Strongyloides stercoralis Infestation in a Child: How a Nematode Can Affect Gut Microbiota.

Background: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the intestinal nematode Strongyloides stercoralis and characterized by gastrointestinal and pulmonary involvement. We report a pediatric case of strongyloidiasis to underline the response of the host microbiota to the perturbation induced by the nematode. Methods: We performed a 16S rRNA-metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiota of a 7-year-old female during and after S. stercolaris infection, investigating three time-point of stool samples' ecology: T0- during parasite infection, T1- a month after parasite infection, and …

Strongyloides stercoralis infection complicating the central nervous system.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode endemic in humid tropical regions. The life cycle of this parasite is complex and unique due to its capacity to cause autoinfection, resulting in chronic infections. Innate and adaptive immune responses are responsible for clearing the parasite. Many risk factors have been described, but the most important is living in or having visited an endemic area. The clinical presentation of strongyloidiasis is varied and ranges from asymptomatic chronic infection to hyperinfection syndrome. Hyperinfection syndrome is more common in patients with immunosuppresion …

Strongyloides stercoralis transmission by kidney transplantation in two recipients from a common donor.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in an immunocompromised host has a high mortality rate but may initially present with nonspecific pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms. Donor-derived S. stercoralis by kidney transplantation is an uncommon diagnosis and difficult to prove. We report two renal allograft recipients on different immunosuppressive maintenance regimens that developed strongyloidiasis after transplantation from the same donor. Recipient 1 presented with a small bowel obstruction. Larvae were demonstrated on a duodenal biopsy and isolated from gastric, pulmonary, and stool …

Two donor-related infections in a heart transplant recipient: one common, the other a tropical surprise.

BACKGROUND: Infection is the most frequent complication after heart transplantation (HTx). In this report and brief literature review we present a recipient who some 6 weeks post-HTx had two donor-related infections: a "common" primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and, simultaneously, a highly unusual donor-related Strongyloides stercoralis infection. METHODS: The parasite was discovered by chance in a skin biopsy. CMV was treated with ganciclovir and the strongyloidiasis was cured with two courses of anti-helminthic therapy--initially with ivermectine and albendazol and, in response to eo…

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and other helminths in four districts of Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Estimation of prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection is required in endemic areas, in order to identify areas in need of control programmes. Data on prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Madagascar are scant. Aim of this work was to estimate prevalence of S. stercoralis in four districts of Madagascar. METHODS: Fecal and serum samples collected in the context of a previous study on schistosomiasis were tested with S. stercoralis real-time PCR and serology, respectively. A multiplex real-time PCR for Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenalis, Necator americanus, and Trich…

[Animal helminthisms and their zonal prevalence in the Orenburg Region].

In the 1980s, porcine ascariasis, animal strongyloidiasis, and ruminant moniesiases were commonest in the Orenburg Region. At present, among the nosological entities there is a preponderance of the same helminthisms, i.e. they have the pattern of steady-state invasions. The strongyloidiases are spread in all zones of the region, moniesiases of large and small cattle are in the central and eastern zones, respectively.

Gastric perforation caused by Strongyloides stercoralis: a case report.

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitosis caused by the female nematode of the Strongyloides stercoralis. S. stercoralis causes a chronic infection that is asymptomatic in 50% of chronically infected patients, and it can also affect the stomach. Gastric involvement causes symptoms mostly mimicking gastritis. We report herein a case of gastric perforation in a 37-year-old woman, which was thought to be caused by S. stercoralis.

On the specificity of the indirect haemagglutination in diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis.

Human sera were collected from parasitologically proven cases of filariasis, strongyloidiasis, hymenolepiasis and ascariasis. Antibodies against these parasites cross react in the indirect haemagglutination for the antileishmanial antibodies at dilution up to 1:128. The diagnostic titer should be raised to 256 in order to increase the specificity of the test in areas where such parasites occur.

A case with severe diarrhoea and Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

A case with severe diarrhoea and Strongyloides stercoralis infection is described. Further examination showed that the patient also had abnormal colonization of the duodenum with Hafnia alvei and that this disappeared when the Strongyloides infection was treated with mebendazole. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, "skin rash" and malabsorption in association with blood eosinophilia should arouse suspicion of strongyloidiasis.

A century-old methodology revisited: Quantitative standardisation for collection of Strongyloides venezuelensis eggs and current applications.

Human strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is a neglected disease of high worldwide prevalence, with considerable potential for severe, fatal outcomes in complicated cases. Studies using the rodent parasite Strongyloides venezuelensis as a model have provided valuable insights into strongyloidiasis, yet efficient, standardised methods for isolating large quantities of viable parasite eggs for biomedical research remain scarce. This study revisits and modernises the classical flotation principle, presenting a saturated-solution centrifugation protocol for egg recovery from inf…

Strongyloides stercoralis.

Strongyloidiasis has been estimated to affect over 600 million people worldwide. It is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, a roundworm endemic to the tropics and subtropics, especially areas where sanitation is suboptimal Autochthonous transmission has been documented in rural areas of the USA and Europe. Humans are infected when larvae penetrate the skin or are ingested. Autoinfection, in which larvae generated in the host go on to re-infect the host, leads to a state of chronic asymptomatic infection often with eosinophilia. Hyperinfection syndrome may develop when patients develop immune s…

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in a post-renal transplant patient.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode that is able to infect the host tissue and persist asymptomatic for many years through autoinfection. It causes life-threatening hyperinfection in immunocompromised hosts. This report describes a rare case of strongyloidiasis in a 40-year-old male following renal transplant, which was diagnosed by colonoscopic biopsy. The literature on the subject is also reviewed.

Is the prevalence of HTLV-1 infection higher in Strongyloides carriers than in non-carriers?

To assess the concomitance of strongyloidiasis and HTLV-1 infection, an epidemiological survey was conducted in Okinawa, Japan, using the agar-plate culture, a highly sensitive method for detection of Strongyloides stercoralis. No significant difference in the positive rate of anti-HTLV-1 antibody was found between Strongyloides carriers and non-carriers. This result suggests that these two infections occur independently.
