Club drug use in Germany.

In this paper the epidemiology of club drug use in Germany, including the use of 3,4-methylendioxy-N-methamphetamine (MDMA) known as 'ecstasy' and related substances such as speed, amphetamines, hallucinogens, and cannabis is described on the basis of five different surveys. Two of them are representative household surveys to monitor the licit and illicit drug use behavior of the German population. The third one is a longitudinal study aimed at exploring comorbidity and posited risk and protective factors in adolescents and young adults with specific emphasis on substance use-related disorders

Building recovery capital: co-creating an assets-based community engagement toolkit for people accessing drug and alcohol treatment services.

BACKGROUND: Community assets such as social groups, volunteering opportunities and wellbeing activities can strengthen recovery capital and support long-term recovery; however, people accessing drug and alcohol treatment services often face barriers to engagement. This study aimed to co-create an Assets-Based Community Engagement (ABCE) toolkit to strengthen connections between treatment services and community assets. METHODS: A rapid evidence review informed a 12-week co-creation project involving workshops with service users, peer mentors and staff. Participants explored barriers, enablers

Rising and disparate trends in the private/for-profit acquisition of nonprofit substance use treatment facilities, US, 2019-2024.

BACKGROUND: Private acquisition of public and nonprofit healthcare facilities is increasing throughout the United States (US). While privatization can be beneficial, growing evidence has demonstrated higher costs, larger patient volumes, and worsening outcomes. These trends are also apparent in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities at a time when overdose and treatment demand are at an all time high. This study was designed to measure whether increases in private acquisitions of nonprofit substance use treatment facilities are happening faster in underrepresented and underresourced

Preclinical evidence for statin modulation of analgesic tolerance and substance use disorders: a narrative review.

Background: Statins, widely prescribed for their lipid-lowering effects, have emerged as potential neuroactive agents with anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory properties relevant to neurobiology of substance use disorders (SUDs). However, preclinical evidence supporting their role in modulating drug use-related behaviors remains scattered and requires critical synthesis. Methods: A comprehensive narrative search was conducted in Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed up to May 2025 using combinations of terms related to drug dependence, SUD, relapse, withdrawal, and statins. Eligible studies incl

Community Reinforcement and Family Training versus counselling for parents of treatment-refusing young adults with hazardous substance use: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the high prevalence and negative effects of hazardous substance use, few young adults enter treatment. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), a support programme for concerned significant others of people with substance use disorders, has proved efficacious in promoting treatment entry. The aim of the current trial was to compare the efficacy of CRAFT with an active control for parents of young adults (aged 18-24 years) with hazardous substance use. DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled superiority trial comparing CRAFT (n = 58) with an active con

Clinical detoxification of bromazolam using diazepam: a case report.

An increasing number of new psychoactive substances (NPS), such as designer benzodiazepines, are becoming available on the recreational drug market. These are new unregistered substances and thereby an attempt to evade legislation. Often there is very limited clinical information available regarding these NPS, which could result in undesirable clinical outcomes in the management of intoxications, dependencies and withdrawals following NPS use. In this case report we describe a 23-year-old woman, who was admitted to our residential addiction care facility for the detoxification of the designer

Nystagmus among suspected amphetamine impaired drivers.

Clinical signs of drug use can be helpful to identify which drug has been consumed. Amphetamine intake has traditionally not been considered to cause nystagmus. The aim of this study was to explore whether there is a relationship between amphetamine use and nystagmus in a population of apprehended drivers in a naturalistic setting. We evaluated drivers suspected of drug-impaired driving where blood samples were collected and a clinical test of impairment (CTI) was performed. Evaluation of nystagmus is one of the CTI subtests. The samples were analysed for alcohol and psychoactive drugs. Cases

Psychedelic drug abuse potential assessment for new drug applications and controlled substance scheduling: A United States perspective.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelics are an increasingly active area of research and pharmaceutical development. This includes abuse potential assessment to better understand their pharmacological mechanisms and effects and guide controlled substance regulation. Psychedelics pose challenges to abuse assessments to ensure valid, reliable, and generalizable outcomes and safe study conduct. FINDINGS: Key nonclinical techniques, for example, receptor binding and functional assays in vitro, and nonclinical physical dependence determinations, are easily adaptable to psychedelics. However, the entactogens (weak

Institutional violence from police militarization and drug cartel wars as a 'Big Event' and its influence on drug use harms and HIV risk in people who inject drugs on the U.S.-Mexico border.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the US-Mexico Border is one of the largest drug trafficking regions, with Ciudad Juarez (CJ) and El Paso (EP) making up the second-largest border crossing in the world. Border communities are places where the risk of drug use harm and infectious diseases such as HIV are augmented due to the confluence of factors operating across the physical, social, economic and policy environment. Although the two cities are economically, culturally, and socially intertwined, each has distinct criminal justice systems and policy practices aimed at curtailing substance use. Between 2008

Cost and cost-effectiveness of abstinence contingent wage supplements.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders are correlated with unemployment and poverty. However, few interventions aim to improve substance use, unemployment, and, distally, poverty. The Abstinence-Contingent Wage Supplement (ACWS) randomized controlled trial combined a therapeutic workplace with abstinence-contingent wage supplements to address substance use and unemployment. The ACWS study found that abstinence-contingent wage supplements increased the percentage of participants who had negative drug tests, who were employed, and who were above the poverty line during the intervention period. Challenges of Diagnosing and Managing Designer Benzodiazepine Dependence and Withdrawal: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Over the last 10 years, an increasing number of unregulated novel psychoactive substances, including "designer benzodiazepines" (DBZDs), have emerged on the recreational drug market. Despite the rapidly increasing usage of DBZDs, there is a significant lack of information regarding clinical management. Here we present a case illustrating the difficulties of diagnosing and managing DBZD related sedative-hypnotic use disorder. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient is a 30-year-old man with severe opioid and sedative-hypnotic use disorders. He had a 10-year history of using heroin, clonazol

Life after incarceration: The impact of stability on formerly imprisoned Oxford House residents.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, roughly 65% of the US prison population is diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD) and over 600,000 individuals are released from incarceration yearly. Thus, it is important to better understand the factors that allow individuals recovering from SUD to reintegrate into communities after incarceration. This study sought to understand the relationship between a personality mediator (stability) and quality of life (QOL) and belonging support (BS), as well as the relationship between this mediator and QOL and psychological sense of community

Income generation and the patterning of substance use: A gender-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated how income-generating activities among marginalized people who use drugs (PWUD)-including employment, income assistance, street-based activities, sex work, and illegal activities-can provide both benefit (e.g., additional income) and harm (e.g., violence, criminalization). However, little is known about gender differences in factors such as drug use patterns that are associated with income-generating activities among PWUD. METHODS: Using data from prospective cohorts of HIV-positive and HIV-negative PWUD in Vancouver, Canada, we conducted explora

Correlates and Potential Confounds of Cannabis Withdrawal Among High-Risk Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The current study used a sample of high-risk adolescents to examine cannabis withdrawal correlates, including assessments of other drug withdrawal and affective lability that may confound cannabis withdrawal measurement. METHOD: A total of 448 high-risk adolescents, living in the Southwest United States, were recruited from a juvenile detention center for a sexual risk-reduction intervention study (60% male; 67% Hispanic). Assessments were administered every 3 months for a year, resulting in five assessments of drug use and withdrawal (cannabis, alcohol, nicotine). Affective labili

[Drug Dependence and Cytotoxicity of Law-evading Drugs: Their Identities Explored from Basic Research].

Cases of people experiencing disturbed consciousness or dyspnea, causing traffic accidents, or requiring ambulance transport to hospital due to abuse of law-evading chemical substances have become a serious social problem in Japan. Most law-evading herbal products are marketed as incense or herbs and consist of finely chopped, dry vegetative matter mixed with chemical substances (drugs). Analysis of the chemical substances in these herbal products has demonstrated that they contain synthetic cannabinoids. Because there are many cannabinoid compounds, even if a particular drug is regulated, sim

Reflection of Socioeconomic Changes in Wastewater: Licit and Illicit Drug Use Patterns.

The economic crisis plaguing Greece was expected to impact consumption of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs - a priori to an unknown extent. We quantified the change of use for various classes of licit and illicit drugs by monitoring Athens' wastewater from 2010 to 2014. A high increase in the use of psychoactive drugs was detected between 2010 and 2014, especially for antipsychotics (35-fold), benzodiazepines (19-fold), and antidepressants (11-fold). This directly reflects the perceived increase of incidences associated with mental illnesses in the population, as a consequence of severe socio

Prevalence of drug use in pregnant West Virginia patients.

INTRODUCTION: Substance abuse in pregnancy is of serious concern to society as well as health care providers caring for pregnant women and their infants. Various studies have suggested a prevalence of 10 -20%. This study used anonymous sampling of umbilical cord tissue to estimate the prevalence of substance abuse in West Virginia. METHODS: For the period of August 2009, as many umbilical cord samples as possible were collected at 8 regionally diverse hospitals in West Virginia. The cord tissue samples were then assayed for amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, benzodiazapines, methadone
