CHEMO-IMMUNOLOGICAL STUDIES ON CONJUGATED CARBOHYDRATE-PROTEINS : III. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE ANAPHYLAXIS WITH SYNTHETIC SUGAR-PROTEINS.

1. Guinea pigs passively sensitized with the serum of rabbits immunized with an artificially prepared sugar-protein (gluco-globulin) exhibit typical anaphylactic shock when subsequently inoculated with gluco-albumin; the serum of rabbits immunized with a second synthetic sugar-protein (galacto-globulin) similarly sensitizes guinea pigs to galacto-albumin. The reactions, in each instance, are specific and depend for their specificity on the carbohydrate component, and not on the protein fraction of the synthesized sugar-protein. 2. Guinea pigs actively sensitized with gluco-globulin or galacto-

A closed-loop biorefinery approach for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production using sugars from carob pods as the sole raw material and downstream processing using the co-product lignin.

A novel closed-loop biorefinery model using carob pods as the feed material was developed for PHB production. The carob pods were delignified, and as the second step, sugars present in the delignified carob pods were extracted using water. Ralstonia eutropha and Bacillus megaterium were cultivated on the carob pod extract and its performance was evaluated using Taguchi experimental design. R. eutropha outperformed the B. megaterium in terms of its capability to grow at a maximum initial sugar concentration of 40 g L-1 with a maximum PHB production of 12.2 g L-1. Finally, the concentrated ligni…

N-halosuccinimide/AgNO3-efficient reagent systems for one-step synthesis of 2-haloglycals from glycals: application in the synthesis of 2C-branched sugars via Heck coupling reactions.

An expedient one-step synthesis of 2-iodoglycals and 2-bromoglycals from glycals using NIS/AgNO3 and NBS/AgNO3 as reagent systems has been developed. The utility of these 2-haloglycals has been demonstrated by converting them into 2C-branched glycals via the Heck coupling reaction. Ferrier reaction of tri-O-acetyl-2-iodoglycals followed by Heck coupling reaction with methyl acrylate leads to 2C-branched O-glycosides.

Social Media Use and Openness to "Sugar Relationships": Cultural Tightness-Looseness as a Moderator Across 22 Countries.

Social media use has been widely linked to sexual attitudes, yet it remains unclear whether its association with openness to sugar relationships is uniform across countries or contingent on country-level normative contexts. In the present study, we examined whether country-level cultural tightness-looseness moderated the relationship between social media use and openness to sugar relationships across 22 countries. Openness to sugar relationships was conceptualized as a manifestation of a broader orientation toward sexual-economic exchange. Using data from 22,292 adult women drawn from a large

Nitric Oxide Enhances Salt Tolerance in Ginger Seedlings Through Phytohormone Homeostasis and Starch and Sugar Metabolism.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling molecule regulating plant stress responses. In our study, the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) signi … ethyl jasmonate (MeJA), and brassinosteroid (BR). Moreover, NO promoted the accumulation of soluble sugars and sucrose and enhanced the activities of key enzymes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism, thereby effectively improving osmotic adjustment. Collectively, NO improves antioxidant capacity, maintains endogenous phytohormone balance, and enhanc …

BusR is a Bifunctional Transcription Factor Coordinating Both Osmotic Response and Amino Sugar Metabolism in Streptococcus mutans.

Streptococcus mutans, the major causative agent of dental plaque and caries, maintains osmotic balance under hyperosmotic conditions by transporting glycine betaine into the cytoplasm via the BusAB transporter system. This mechanism is coordinated by the c-di-AMP-responsive transcriptional regulator BusR, which represses busAB expression in the absence of osmotic stress. In this study, we systematically characterized the function of BusR in S. mutans UA159. Our experiments showed that deletion of busR resulted not only in high expression of busAB but also in upregulated GlcNAc metabolic genes,

Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and incident depression: an exploratory multi-omics analysis of candidate biological mediators.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading cause of mental and physical disability globally, with its onset and progression influenced by a complex interplay of dietary, psychological, and biological factors. Recent research suggests a link between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and depression risk, although the potential biological pathways underlying this association remain poorly understood. METHODS: This study utilized data from 192,045 participants in the UK Biobank to examine the prospective association between SSB consumption and incident depression using Cox proportional hazards

Hydrogen bonding implications on sweetness behavior of sugar alcohols in food model systems: A thermophysical and FTIR study.

Sugar alcohols play an important role in the pharmaceutical and food industry due to their dominant effect on blood glucose levels and are used as artificial sweeteners in dairy products. The present study was conducted to explore the hydrogen bonding effect and sweetness response on structure-based properties of sugar alcohols (lactitol) in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using volumetric, acoustic, and FTIR techniques to get better considerations about mechanisms of sweet taste chemoreception and give valuable information about lactitol stabilization in the presence of DMSO, and solute-sol

Hide and seek: de novo identification in sugar beet reveals impact of non-autonomous LTR retrotransposons.

Plant genomes are filled with retrotransposons and their derivatives, constantly undergoing sequence diversification and structural rearrangement. Among them, short, non-autonomous retrotransposons lack full coding capacity and often form subfamilies. As a result, non-autonomous retrotransposons are incompletely identified in most to all genome assemblies. Here, we capitalize on our comprehensive understanding of the transposable element (TE) landscape in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) to assess the extent of the blind spot for non-autonomous long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons. This use ca

Soda-baited RNAi yeast insecticides as effective Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSBs) for mosquito control.

BACKGROUND: Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSBs) are a promising, environmentally friendly approach for mosquito control, but the direct field application, scalability and long-term effectiveness of ATSBs across diverse mosquito species remain significant challenges. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We assessed the efficacy of a genetically engineered RNA interference (RNAi) yeast strain (Sh.463) formulated in three sugar baits: soda (Coca-Cola), 10% sucrose, and a commercial mosquito bait (BaitStab), on Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes. All RNAi yeast bait formulations induced signifi

Genome-wide association study of morphometric and metabolic characteristics in European populations of the sugar kelp Saccharina latissima.

The sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is a promising candidate for sustainable aquaculture in the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, but genetic improvement has been hindered by a limited understanding of the genetic basis of economically important traits. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for this species using 202 self-fertilized pseudo-F1 individuals derived from 12 of 13 sampled populations spanning northern and southern European genetic clusters. Individuals were genotyped with ddRAD-seq-derived single nucleotide polymorphism markers and phenotyped in a common-garden ex

Roles of Eleven Key Enzymes in Sweet Value and Soluble Sugar Component Content During Mango Development.

Mango fruits are popular for their flavor. Sugar, a key component of fruit nutrition and flavor, determines fruit quality via its composition and content. While many studies explore molecular regulatory pathways of sugar metabolism in various fruits, large-scale physiological screening of related enzymes via advanced mathematical methods is largely neglected, and the physiological mechanism of sugar accumulation in mango remains unclear. This study analyzed glucose, fructose, sucrose and starch contents, and the activities of 11 sugar metabolism-related enzymes (adenosine diphosphate glucose p

Molecular evolution of starch structure and sugar supply dynamics during the initial fermentation stages of Jiangxiangxing Baijiu.

The enzymatic hydrolysis of sorghum starch is fundamental to Jiangxiangxing Baijiu production. This study investigated the molecular-level degradation of starch during the initial fermentation phases by integrating GPC-MALLS-RI and HPAEC-PAD analyses. We quantified a progressive reduction in starch molecular weight and a structural shift from high- to low-degree-of-polymerization materials. Sugar profiling revealed a distinct temporal transition: heap fermentation served as the primary saccharification hotspot, predominantly accumulating glucose alongside maltose and maltotriose, while pit fer

Combined fat and sugar intake reshapes the tumor microenvironment through hypoxia and lipogenic pathways in breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy worldwide. Beyond genetic factors, dietary components like palmitic acid (PA) and sucrose modulate tumor progression and microenvironment dynamics. However, their combined mechanistic impacts on tumor-stroma crosstalk remain undefined. We investigated how dietary PA and sucrose affect breast cancer growth and the tumor microenvironment using a murine model. METHODS: Mice received Control, high-PA (HPOD), high-sucrose (HCD), or combined (HPCD) diets. We assessed tumor growth, metabolic parameters, membrane fatty acids, histopathology, pro

Domain-Swapping of a GT-B Glycosyltransferase Broadens Its Sugar Donor Range for Glycodiversification of Natural Products.

Glycosylation of natural compounds modulates their bioactivity as well as their physicochemical properties, making glycodiversification a valuable strategy for identifying glycosidic derivatives with improved functional profiles. However, the use of glycosyltransferases (GTs) for their synthesis is constrained by stringent sugar nucleotide donor selectivity, which limits the structural diversity of accessible glycosides. The chimeric NB1//CC1, constituted of 2 self-assembled domains originating from plant glycosyltransferases, was previously demonstrated to transfer glucose onto a wider range

Prediction of carbon dioxide solubility in sugar-water-alcohol solutions at high pressure for application to sparkling drinks.

In the beverage industry, the CO2 pressure and dissolved CO2 reached in their packaged beverage play an important role. In this regard, the work aims to develop a thermodynamic model for the prediction of the phase equilibrium behavior of quaternary CO2-sugar-water-alcohol solutions up to high pressures. The Perturbed Hard Sphere Chain (PHSC) equation of state (EoS) has been used to predict the solubility of CO2 in glucose-water-alcohol solutions. Glucose molecules have been modeled as a chain-like molecule with ten association sites. Cross-association between CO2, glucose, and water molecules
