Clinicians performing cosmetic surgery in the community: a nationwide analysis of physician certification.

BACKGROUND: Practitioners who are not board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are practicing cosmetic surgery. The extent of this issue across the United States has yet to be examined in detail. METHODS: A systematic search using Google was performed to evaluate the qualifications of clinicians marketing themselves as plastic surgeons. For every U.S. state, the following searches were performed: [state] plastic surgery, [state] cosmetic surgery, and [state] aesthetic surgery. The first 50 Web sites returned for each search were visited and scrutinized using the American Socie

Quality of Patient-Reported Outcome Studies Utilizing the BREAST-Q: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) studies are essential in the assessment of surgical procedures in plastic surgery. One accepted and validated questionnaire is the BREAST-Q. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of PRO studies in plastic surgery utilizing the BREAST-Q questionnaire. METHODS: This study involved 2 steps: (1) a systematic review of 23 key criteria assessing the quality of survey research in studies utilizing the BREAST-Q that were published between 2015 and 2018; (2) a review of current guidance for survey research in journals related to plastic

An algorithmic approach for managing orthopaedic surgical wounds of the foot and ankle.

BACKGROUND: Wound breakdown after orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery may necessitate secondary soft tissue coverage. The foot and ankle region is challenging to reconstruct for orthopaedic and plastic surgeons owing to its complex bony anatomy and unique functional demands. Therefore, identifying strategies for plastic surgery of these wounds may help guide surgeons in defining the best treatment plan. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated our current algorithmic approach for managing orthopaedic surgical wounds of the foot and ankle with respect to whether (1) prophylactic or simultaneous soft ti

Suzetrigine: What Should Plastic Surgeons Know?

The opioid epidemic has underscored the urgent need for effective nonopioid analgesics in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Suzetrigine (Journavx), the first recently Food and Drug Administration-approved nonopioid analgesic in 20 years, selectively targets NaV1.8 sodium channels in peripheral nociceptors, offering potent pain relief without significant adverse effects or addictive potential. This article served as an in-depth review of the mechanism, efficacy, and safety of suzetrigine, tailored to the plastic surgeon. The Food and Drug Administration approval process of the drug is explore

Financial Decisions and Reopening a Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Survey of California Plastic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic. As a response, the United States shut down public gatherings and businesses in an effort to quarantine. This included the stopping of elective operations, which greatly affected plastic surgeons and their practices during the initial shutdown. OBJECTIVES: We aim to study the early impact of COVID-19 on the financial implications and practice patterns of plastic surgeons in the state of California during the initial shutdown of elective surgery and provide guidelines for effective management du

Herniation of the cervical disk in plastic surgeons.

Herniations of the cervical disk in plastic surgeons are far more common in practice than the paucity of reported cases would indicate. A likely explanation may be the peculiar, nonergonomic positions that plastic surgeons must hold during surgery while wearing a headlight and loupes. From January 2003 to December 2006, at Tri-Service General Hospital, Taiwan, 4 plastic surgeons experienced herniations of the cervical disk. Magnetic resonance imaging study indicated there was disk herniation or bulging with spinal cord impingement. Two plastic surgeons received cervical diskectomy, corpectomy

Patient-reported outcomes: A primer for plastic surgeons.

Surgical care today is no longer evaluated only on clinical outcomes but also on holistic patient wellbeing. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are a representation of the patient's perspective on their results and wellbeing. The aim of this review is to establish PROs as the center of healthcare and plastic surgery, to delineate important PROs in plastic surgery practice and research, to discuss the future of PROs within our discipline, and to encourage surgeons to incorporate PROs into their practice. PROs are an important parallel of clinical outcomes in that they can use the patient's perspe

Subtractive thinking: A novel combined application of antihelix reconstruction and outer helix reconstruction to treat mild cases of type I to II conchal microtia.

BACKGROUND: The management of mild cases of type Ⅰ to Ⅱ conchal microtia involves grafting cartilage to the affected ear to increase the cartilaginous area and transfer more skin to cover the larger cartilage. Herein, we performed a novel combined surgical procedure based on "subtractive thinking" that included antihelix reconstruction and outer helix reconstruction that was successful in patients with mild type I to II conchal microtia. METHODS: From January 2018 to September 2022, 65 patients with mild, unilateral, type I to II conchal microtia were enrolled in this study. All patients were

Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in Craniofacial Reconstruction and Facial Aesthetics.

The craniofacial region is anatomically complex and is of critical functional and cosmetic importance, making reconstruction challenging. The limitations of current surgical options highlight the importance of developing new strategies to restore the form, function, and esthetics of missing or damaged soft tissue and skeletal tissue in the face and cranium. Regenerative medicine (RM) is an expanding field which combines the principles of tissue engineering (TE) and self-healing in the regeneration of cells, tissues, and organs, to restore their impaired function. RM offers many advantages over

[The interdisciplinary Microsurgeon - Results of the Consensus Workshop of the German Speaking Society for Microsurgery of Peripheral Nerves and Vessels].

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Although Plastic surgery offers a wide range of reliable surgical treatment options independent departments for plastic and reconstructive surgery are not present in every university clinic or leading hospital in Germany. However, the ongoing improvements especially in the field of reconstructive microsurgery enabled and enhanced the treatment of complex defects in order to restore function as well as cosmetic outcome. Knowing the fact that patients are usually referred from other medical disciplines t
