Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with non-contact soft tissue injuries in elite professional soccer players: influence on degree of injury and recovery time.

BACKGROUND: The biological mechanisms involved in non-contact musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries (NCMSTI) are poorly understood. Genetic risk factors may be associated with susceptibility to injuries, and may exert marked influence on recovery times. METHODS: Data on type and degree of injury and recovery time were collected in 73 male professional soccer players (43 White, 11 Black Africans and 19 Hispanics) who suffered total of 242 injuries (203 muscle, 24 ligament, and 15 tendon injuries). One single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) in the following genes were analyzed: Elastin (ELN); Tit…

Subscapularis tendon rupture in an 8-year-old boy: a case report.

Since falling off a motorcycle 2 years earlier, an 8-year-old, right-hand-dominant boy reported anterior shoulder pain and weakness. After being evaluated by his family physician and completing a course of physical therapy with no symptomatic improvement, he was seen at our institution. Physical examination was remarkable for diminished strength with internal rotation (4/5). In addition, bellypress and lift-off tests were positive, suggesting a lesion of the subscapularis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder showed a full-thickness subscapularis tendon tear and a supraspinatus tendon si

Isolated Extra-articular Medial Dislocation of the Long Head of the Biceps Tendon in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

Isolated instability of the long head of the biceps tendon is uncommon and is usually associated with rotator cuff or bicipital pulley injuries. Isolated extra-articular medial dislocation in the absence of associated lesions is particularly rare in the adolescent population. We report the case of a 15-year-old male who presented with anterior shoulder pain after a recreational sports activity. Physical examination revealed localized anterior and anterolateral tenderness, with preserved active and passive range of motion and no clinical signs of instability. Magnetic resonance imaging using MR

Using MSK Ultrasound in the Evaluation of Subscapularis Injuries.

The shoulder is an area that can be prone to a variety of injuries, including subscapularis tendon tears. The subscapularis muscle is one of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff in the shoulder and plays an essential role in stabilizing the shoulder joint while at the same time facilitating internal rotation of the humerus. Injuries to the subscapularis can occur due to trauma, overuse, or degeneration, leading to pain, weakness, and limited mobility. When injury occurs, subscapularis tendon tears are often difficult to diagnose and evaluate due to their location deep within the shou

Therapeutic use of hormones on tendinopathies: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Hormones can modify tendon homeostasis, some of them leading to tendon damage, while others are essentials for healing. This narrative review summarizes the current knowledge on the topic, focusing on the hormones normally secreted by endocrine glands. METHODS: A search in PubMed, Web of Knowledge and EMBASE, using the terms tendinopathy or tendon, combined with estrogens, testosterone, thyroid and parathyroid hormones, glucocorticoids and growth hormone, independently, was performed. Relevant articles focusing on the correlation between hormones and tendons, and their therapeutic

[Treatment of fresh and old ruptures of the extensor tendons (author's transl)].

Knowledge of topographical anatomy and physiological interplay of several structures is considered essential for regaining the normal function of the extensor apparatus of the finger after an acute or an old injury. For better comprehension of the extensor apparatus and because of its anatomical and functional complexity, two types of structural systems are described, namely, the tendinous and the retinacular system. Aetiological aspects and the pathophysiological mechanisms of deformities such as the "swan-neck deformity, boutonnière deformity and mallet finger" are also described and possibi

Anatomy of the sural nerve and its relation to the achilles tendon by ultrasound examination.

Sural nerve injury is a relatively common complication after surgery on the Achilles tendon. Studies to determine the course of the sural nerve have been performed on cadaveric specimens. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to use ultrasound to determine the relations of the sural nerve in a healthy population. The authors performed ultrasound examination of the posterior triangle of the ankle and Achilles tendon to determine the course of the sural nerve relative to the Achilles tendon in healthy participants. The mean distance between the nerve and the tendon was 21.48, 11.47, 5.8,

Common injuries of the athlete's hand.

Hand injuries are among the most frequent accidents seen in sports medicine. All too commonly they are considered trivial since the athlete may continue to participate actively and neglect his injury. The consequent delay in diagnosis and proper treatment may result in long-standing or even permanent disability. This paper describes the more commonly encountered hand injuries, their diagnosis and their optimal treatment. Included are soft-tissue injuries, ligamentous injuries, fractures and tendon avulsions. The basic principles applicable to skeletal and soft-tissue trauma of the hand, which

Common Injuries and Their Management Among Youth to Elite Artistic Male and Female Gymnasts.

Artistic gymnastics is a complex and challenging sport. The specific demands of gymnastics place athletes at unique risk of injuries to the spine, as well as upper and lower extremities. Changes to the rules and scoring system since the 2004 Olympics have encouraged athletes to perform more challenging skills, adding to the risk of injury. Single-sport specialization occurs at a young age among competitive gymnasts, introducing an increased risk of overuse injuries. Common injuries include spondylolysis, medial-sided elbow injuries, gymnast's wrist, ligamentous injuries of the knee, and Achill

[Avulsion injuries of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles].

Avulsion injuries of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Such injuries are rarely to be expected in high-energy trauma. Degenerative damage or iatrogenic injuries in the context of hip surgery are more frequently identified as the cause. Clinically, in addition to lateral hip pain, limping is an important finding and depends on the extent of the tendon damage. In addition to the medical history and clinical examination, imaging by means of sonography and, above all, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, possibly with artifact-reduced sequ

'Hook' Shape Lister Tubercle Is Associated with a Greater Incidence of Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon Rupture after Distal Radius Fracture.

Background: A rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon located close to the Lister tubercle is an uncommon complication of distal radius fractures. This study aimed to determine whether the size and shape of Lister tubercle in patients with EPL rupture differs from a matched group of patients with distal radius fractures without EPL rupture. Methods: We identified 15 patients with EPL rupture (3.5%) out of 426 with distal radius fractures treated conservatively at our hospital over 4 years. Out of the remaining 411 patients with distal radius fractures without EPL rupture, we selec

Allograft reconstruction of peroneus longus and brevis tendons tears arising from a single muscular belly. Case report and surgical technique.

Anatomic variants of the peroneal tendons may cause tendon disorders. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence on how to address chronic tendon pathology when a variant of the peroneal tendons is causing the patient's symptoms. We present a patient with an uncommon peroneal muscle presentation: a single muscular belly dividing into both the peroneus longus and brevis tendons. After extensive debridement of tendinopathic tissue, primary repair or tenodesis was not possible; therefore a unique solution for this problem was performed, reconstructing both peroneal tendons using a semitendinosus allog
