Tendons and ligaments play key roles in the musculoskeletal system in both man and animals. Both tissues can undergo traumatic injury, age-related degeneration and chronic disease, causing discomfort, pain and increased susceptibility to wider degenerative joint disease. The only published clinical series states that the therapeutic approach depends on the existence or absence of a preoperative trigger. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease is a well-recognized inflammatory joint disorder. Extensor tendon rupture associated with CPPD deposition has rarely been described. We report herein the case of a 58-year-old woman who underwent reconstruction for subcutaneous extensor tendon ruptures of the extensor tendons for the ring and little fingers on both wrists associated with CPPD deposition. The significance of this case is the occurrence at an earlier age compared to previous papers and the appearance on bilateral wrists.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Injury to the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) is common in competition horses. The SDFT contributes to locomotory efficiency by storing energy; such tendons have low safety margins. Tendons which merely position the limb, including the opposing common digital extensor tendon (CDET), are rarely injured.
