Science for the community: assessing mental health after 9/11.

Reactions to the September 11 attacks across the United States were pervasive, and persons throughout the country reported experiences akin to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the first week following the attacks. In the New York area, 2 major surveys conducted 4 to 8 weeks after the attacks found that approximately 1 in 10 persons probably met full criteria for PTSD related to September 11. Although tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use did increase, it was largely among persons already using these substances. The greatest increase, not surprisingly, occurred among persons with PTSD and

It could have been me: vicarious victims and disaster-focused distress.

College students who had experienced no personal bereavement in the September 11 terrorist attacks completed questionnaires between 3 and 5 weeks after the attacks and 5 months later. Cross-sectional and longitudinal structural equation model (SEM) analyses revealed that general distress and disaster-focused distress are discernable reactions following a collective loss. Both types of distress were higher among women and by those reporting social strain. General distress was associated with previous stressful events and mental health issues. Perceived similarity to the victims predicted disast

Year in review 2002.

The year opened on a somber note, with the nation still struggling to cope with the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and subsequent anthrax scare. The healthcare industry was scrambling to be ready for any future attacks and pondering the best preparedness measures. Meanwhile, compliance and quality of care simmered on the back burner, along with soaring malpractice insurance costs and growing budget deficits in the states. And debate over provider reimbursement rates, staffing shortages and more double-digit increases in the cost of healthcare coverage also made headlines.

Narrative Reconstruction as an Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Pilot Delayed Intervention Quasi-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Although empirically supported treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exist, many patients fail to complete therapy, are nonresponsive, or remain symptomatic following treatment. This paper presents the results of a delayed intervention quasi-randomized controlled study that evaluated the efficacy of narrative reconstruction as an integrative intervention for PTSD. During narrative reconstruction, the patient and therapist reconstruct an organized, coherent, and detailed written narrative of the patient's traumatic experience. Additionally, narrative reconstruction focuses on arri

Sleep disorders in children.

Although sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are common in both children and adults, the clinical features and treatments for these conditions differ considerably between these two populations. Whereas an adult with obstructive sleep apnea typically presents with a history of obesity, snoring, and prominent daytime somnolence, a child with the condition is more likely to present with normal body weight, tonsillar hypertrophy, and inattentiveness during school classes. The adult with suspected sleep apnea almost always undergoes a baseline polysomnogram and proceeds to

Serum cholesterol, uric acid and cholinesterase in victims of the Tokyo subway sarin poisoning: a relation with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cholesterol and uric acid, which might correlate with steroidogenesis and monoamine functions, may change under emotionally stressful conditions and in mental disturbances. Among anxiety disorders, an increase of serum cholesterol has been observed in panic disorder. However, the issue has not been adequately investigated in other anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study investigated serum cholesterols, uric acid and cholinesterase in victims of the Tokyo subway sarin poisoning, 1995, in a series of 5-year follow-ups. Cholinesterase was studied, in

[Damage control surgery (DCS) and tactical abbreviated surgical care (TASC) in thoracoabdominal trauma : Courses and consequences].

The management of hemodynamically unstable critically injured trauma patients requires specialized expertise in acute surgical care and prioritization. In crisis and disaster scenarios or mass casualty incidents, these demands are further intensified by limited resources, time pressure and organizational complexity. The concepts of damage control surgery (DCS) and tactical abbreviated surgical care (TASC) describe patient-adapted and situation-adapted strategies focused on immediate life-saving interventions, rapid stabilization and limitation of further physiological deterioration, with defin

Non-Pharmacological interventions for psychological stress reactions in disaster nursing rescue workers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Disasters exert a significant negative impact on the mental health of medical staff. Although many non-pharmacological interventions exist, there currently is a lack of literature that systematically summarizes these interventions. Therefore, this study aims to review existing literature on the use of non-pharmacological interventions to address psychological stress reactions in disaster nursing rescue workers. METHODS: This study was guided by the methodological framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. A systematic search was conducted from the inception to January 19, 2025 in

The Effectiveness of a Mindfulness-Based Psychoeducation Programme for Emotional Regulation in Individuals with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation has emerged as a transdiagnostic factor that potentially exacerbates the risk of early-onset, maintenance, and relapse of psychosis. Mindfulness is described as the awareness that emerges from paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It gently pulls the mind out of the negative emotions induced by the disparity between expectation and reality by focusing on the present moment, instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past. However, only a few research has ever focused on the efficacy of using a mindfulness-based intervention to im

Applying Science: Opportunities to Inform Disease Management Policy with Cooperative Research within a One Health Framework.

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the current saiga antelope die off in Kazakhstan each represent very real and difficult to manage public or veterinary health crises. They also illustrate the importance of stable and funded surveillance and sound policy for intervention or disease control. While these two events highlight extreme cases of infectious disease (Ebola) or (possible) environmental exposure (saiga), diseases such as anthrax, brucellosis, tularemia, and plague are all zoonoses that pose risks and present surveillance challenges at the wildlife-livestock-human interfaces.
