Smoking and everyday prospective memory: a comparison of self-report and objective methodologies.

AIMS: To examine whether persistent smoking leads to impairments in self-reported and objective measures of prospective memory (PM: the cognitive ability to remember to carry out activities at some future point in time). METHODS: An opportunity sample of 18 existing smokers and 22 who had never smoked were compared. An existing-groups design was utilised, comparing a smoking group with a never-smoked control group as the independent factor. Scores on the sub-scales of the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) and scores on the Cambridge Prospective Memory Test (CAMPROMPT)

The role of intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety on compulsive exercise in adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The role of anxiety as a risk factor for compulsive exercise elements among adolescents is unclear. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), which is a risk feature for anxiety and eating disorders, may be an important, unexplored risk factor for compulsive exercise dimensions. This study aimed to examine the role of IU dimensions and anxiety on compulsive exercise elements. Given previous evidence indicating gender differences in compulsive exercise and IU levels, gender was included as a moderator. DESIGN/METHODS: A total of 201 adolescent girls and 207 adolescent boys co

The anticipatory response to stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety in early adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Whilst cortisol reactivity has been associated with depression and anxiety disorders, research examining cortisol reactivity with early symptoms of these conditions in males and females is limited. METHODS: At age 18, 748 males and females from Gen2 of the Raine Study were assessed for their salivary cortisol response to a psychosocial stressor using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Participants later completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) at age 20 which was used as the outcome measure in regression models. RESULTS: We found differences in DASS-21 across TSS

Cognitive therapy for anxiety disorders.

In summary, we conclude that current evidence supports cognitive therapy as a promising approach to the treatment of anxiety. However, definitive conclusions regarding its efficacy must await large-scale, well-conducted, controlled trials that address the methodological shortcomings previously addressed. Furthermore, although there are many components to Beck's version of cognitive therapy, the critical ingredients are not known at this time. Despite the absence of data regarding this issue, we believe that future trials of cognitive therapy should include the following as core components: (a)

Massage therapy in the breast imaging department: repurposing an ancient anxiety reducing method.

BACKGROUND: Massage therapy's ability to mitigate breast imaging associated anxiety has not been previously studied. Anxiety is, however, often cited as a harm of screening mammography with few options offered to diminish anxiety other than not screening. Reducing anxiety may improve compliance, and reduce breast cancer mortality and morbidity. A complimentary massage therapy program evaluated patient acceptance, anxiety perception and perceived value of massage. METHODS: Over 10 weeks, verbal agreement was obtained from 113 breast imaging patients who desired a hand or shoulder/neck massage.

Daily and nightly anxiety among patients affected by night eating syndrome and binge eating disorder.

We tested if there were any differences about nocturnal and diurnal anxiety between patients either affected by Binge Eating Disorder (BED) or Night eating Syndrome (NES). Fifty four patients affected by BED, 13 by NES and 16 by both BED and NES were tested using the Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire (SDQ). Their nocturnal eating behavior was ascertained through the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ). Patients affected by both BED and NES scored significantly higher on SAS than other patients. Among NES patients we found a correlation between a SDQ subscale

[Serum serotonin in patients with tension headaches].

Tension headache (TH) is one of the most frequent types of idiopathic headaches. The leading role in its pathogenesis is played by depression and dysmetabolism of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The subjects were 100 patients with TH. The examination included study of headache intensity, complex psychometric testing, and immune-enzyme measurement of serotonin serum level, performed before and after treatment with the anti-depressant prodep. All the patients had moderate pain syndrome, depression, and moderate or severe anxiety, which demonstrated negative correlation with serotonin serum level
