Functional asymmetry for facial affect perception in high and low hostile men and women.

The influence of cerebral asymmetry in the perception of affect on Type A behaviour was examined. Twenty-five men and 25 women classified as Type A or Type B, using the Framingham Type A Scale (FTAS) and the Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory (CMHO), participated. Subjects were required to identify the facial affect depicted in Ekman and Friesen's (1978) angry, happy, and neutral stimuli using a forced-choice reaction-time paradigm with only angry or happy alternatives signified by the respective response manipulanda. Stimuli were presented within the left or right visual fields tachistoscopicall

Neural signal data collection and analysis of Percept™ PC BrainSense recordings for thalamic stimulation in epilepsy.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) using Medtronic's Percept™ PC implantable pulse generator is FDA-approved for treating Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and epilepsy. Percept™ PC enables simultaneous recording of neural signals from the same lead used for stimulation. Many Percept™ PC sensing features were built with PD patients in mind, but these features are potentially useful to refine therapies for many different disease processes. When starting our ongoing epilepsy research study, we found it difficult to find detailed descriptions about the

Gustatory function after microlaryngoscopy.

CONCLUSION: Quantitative gustatory alterations are rare after microlaryngoscopy (MLS), whereas transient qualitative taste distortions occur more often. Patients undergoing MLS should know that mild but transient qualitative taste disorders may occur. OBJECTIVE: Suspension MLS requires neck extension and tongue compression. Little is known about taste disorders following MLS. To investigate qualitative and quantitative gustatory function after MLS we tested and questioned patients before and several weeks after the MLS. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective controlled study carried ou

What Motives Influence Parents' Commitment to Their Children's Sport Participation in the United States?

Background: The public often places value on youth sport involvement in the United States due to its potential to foster positive outcomes for participants. Although sport parents are key socializers and provide access to appropriate participation opportunities for children, less is known about how their perceptions of their child's motives influence their sport commitments. Purpose: Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to understand how parents' perceptions of their child's motives for sport participation were associated with time/travel sport commitments. Methods: Participants (N

Shifting goalposts: widening discrepancies between girls' actual and ideal bodies predict disordered eating from preadolescence to adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding how disordered eating (DE) relates to perceived actual body size, ideal body size, and their discrepancy. This study examined changes in perceived actual body size, ideal body size, and actual-ideal discrepancies over time, and their relationship with subsequent DE. METHODS: Participants were 759 female twins from the Minnesota Twin Family Study who reported on body image and DE every three to five years between approximately ages 11 to 29. We used multilevel modeling to examine developmental trajectories of body mass index (BMI) and Body Rating Scale Act

Emotion perception is mediated by spatial frequency content.

Spatial frequencies have been shown to play an important role in face identification, but very few studies have investigated the role of spatial frequency content in identifying different emotions. In the present study we investigated the role of spatial frequency in identifying happy and sad facial expressions. Two experiments were conducted to investigate (a) the role of specific spatial frequency content in emotion identification, and (b) hemispherical asymmetry in emotion identification. Given the links between global processing, happy emotions, and low frequencies, we hypothesized that lo

Inattentional Deafness: Visual Load Leads to Time-Specific Suppression of Auditory Evoked Responses.

UNLABELLED: Due to capacity limits on perception, conditions of high perceptual load lead to reduced processing of unattended stimuli (Lavie et al., 2014). Accumulating work demonstrates the effects of visual perceptual load on visual cortex responses, but the effects on auditory processing remain poorly understood. Here we establish the neural mechanisms underlying "inattentional deafness"--the failure to perceive auditory stimuli under high visual perceptual load. Participants performed a visual search task of low (target dissimilar to nontarget items) or high (target similar to nontarget it

Rehabilitative exercise scheduling: Effects on balance, functional movement performance, and pain perception in middle-aged women with knee pain: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The scheduling of clinical rehabilitative exercise should combine best possible delivery of exercise with the most efficient use of time, facilities, equipment, and personnel. However, it is not clear whether distribution of a fixed amount of exercise volume is more efficient over a longer time period in a week (distributed manner) than over a shorter time period in a week (massed manner). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of distributed versus massed within- and between-session exercise scheduling on balance, exercise performance, and pain perception in middle-aged women with kn

Is vestibular self-motion perception controlled by the velocity storage? Insights from patients with chronic degeneration of the vestibulo-cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: The rotational vestibulo-ocular reflex (rVOR) generates compensatory eye movements in response to rotational head accelerations. The velocity-storage mechanism (VSM), which is controlled by the vestibulo-cerebellar nodulus and uvula, determines the rVOR time constant. In healthy subjects, it has been suggested that self-motion perception in response to earth-vertical axis rotations depends on the VSM in a similar way as reflexive eye movements. We aimed at further investigating this hypothesis and speculated that if the rVOR and rotational self-motion perception share a common VSM,

ECG arrhythmia classification based on the fast ant colony clustering algorithm with improved spatiotemporal feature perception ability.

Electrocardiograph (ECG) is one of the most critical physiological signals used for arrhythmia diagnosis. In recent years, ECG arrhythmia classification devices consisting of multi-module sensors, clustering algorithms and neural networks play an important role in monitoring and diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. However, the commonly used ECG arrhythmia classification methods are still facing some problems such as the complex model structure and long running time. To address the above problems, this paper proposes an ECG arrhythmia classification method based on the fast ant colony clusterin
