Inner macular hyperreflectivity demonstrated by optical coherence tomography in niemann-pick disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in patients with CVD receiving long-term antithrombotic therapy, increasing gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding risk. Potassium-competitive acid blockers, such as fexuprazan, provide rapid and potent acid suppression; however, relevant evidence in this high-risk population is limited. This study evaluated the effects of fexuprazan on fasting serum gastrin levels, GERD symptoms, and bleeding outcomes in patients with CVD receiving antithrombotic agents. METHODS: In this prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary hosp

Real-time subglottic stenosis imaging using optical coherence tomography in the rabbit.

IMPORTANCE: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a severe, acquired, potentially life-threatening disease that can be caused by endotracheal tube intubation. Newborns and neonates are particularly susceptible to SGS owing to the small caliber of their airway. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate optical coherence tomography (OCT) capabilities in detecting injury and scar formation using a rabbit model. Optical coherence tomography may provide a noninvasive, bedside or intensive care unit modality for the identification of early airway trauma with the intention of preventing progression to SGS and can image the

Optical coherence tomography aspect of crystalline macular dystrophy in Sjögren-Larsson syndrome.

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome is an autosomal-recessive disease caused by a deficiency of the microsomal fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme. The syndrome is defined by congenital ichthyosis, spasticity, mental retardation and ocular features. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy presenting with bilateral visual impairment and photophobia. Fundus examination showed a mark of yellow-white refractile, perifoveal crystals in each eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) detected focal reflective structures corresponding to clinically visible intraretinal crystals and macular macrocystoids space. Thi

Optical coherence tomography segmentation reveals ganglion cell layer pathology after optic neuritis.

Post-mortem ganglion cell dropout has been observed in multiple sclerosis; however, longitudinal in vivo assessment of retinal neuronal layers following acute optic neuritis remains largely unexplored. Peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness, measured by optical coherence tomography, has been proposed as an outcome measure in studies of neuroprotective agents in multiple sclerosis, yet potential swelling during the acute stages of optic neuritis may confound baseline measurements. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether patients with multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis o

Recent advances in optical coherence tomography for the diagnoses of lung disorders.

There have been many advances in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary medicine in the past several years, with major progress in the field of imaging. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution (micron level) imaging modality currently being advanced with the potential to image airway wall structures in real time and at higher resolution than previously possible. OCT has the potential to increase the sensitivity and specificity of biopsies, create 3D images of the airway to guide diagnostics, and may have a future role in diverse areas such as the evaluation and treat

Imaging retinal nerve fiber bundles using optical coherence tomography with adaptive optics.

Early detection of axonal tissue loss in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is critical for effective treatment and management of diseases such as glaucoma. This study aims to evaluate the capability of ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography with adaptive optics (UHR-AO-OCT) for imaging the RNFL axonal bundles (RNFBs) with 3×3×3μm(3) resolution in the eye. We used a research-grade UHR-AO-OCT system to acquire 3°×3° volumes in four normal subjects and one subject with an arcuate retinal nerve fiber layer defect (n=5; 29-62years). Cross section (B-scans) and en face (C-scan) slices extr

Optical coherence tomography in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new method that could aid analysis of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS) by capturing thinning of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). Meta-analyses of data for time domain OCT show RNFL thinning of 20.38 microm (95% CI 17.91-22.86, n=2063, p<0.0001) after optic neuritis in MS, and of 7.08 microm (5.52-8.65, n=3154, p<0.0001) in MS without optic neuritis. The estimated RNFL thinning in patients with MS is greater than the extent expected in normal ageing, probably because of retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration and progressive loss of retina
