We report on two cases of the prenatal diagnosis of arterio-venous communication between the intra-abdominal umbilical vein and atypical arteries. The diagnosis was made by color and spectral Doppler and 'color power angiography'. Both cases presented with hydrops fetalis, one at 14 and the other at 31 weeks of gestation. In the first case, color Doppler demonstrated an atypical arterial vessel connecting the umbilical vein with the aorta; the ductus venosus was patent. The diagnosis of peripheral lung foci may prove difficult. In addition to transthoracic puncture under X-ray fluoroscopy or CT control, ultrasound-guided puncture was shown to be a useful alternative. We report two paediatric cases in which a non communicating hydrocephalus was treated by neuro-endoscopic third ventriculostomy. Subsequently, patency of the septostomy defect and CSF flow through it was demonstrated employing colour Doppler ultrasound. The biphasic nature of the flow jet was confirmed with pulse wave Doppler.

PURPOSE: Arterial variations of the upper limb may bear high importance for many clinical procedures, including the use of flaps in plastic surgery. We present a feasible way for visualization and confirmation of presence of these variations.
