Diagnosis, management and recurrence rates of Mitrofanoff polyps.

BACKGROUND: Intraluminal polyps are a known complication following creation of a urinary continent catheterizable channel (Mitrofanoff). These polyps can lead to difficult catheterizations in addition to symptomatic bleeding. However, there is limited data available regarding management and outcomes of these polyps. We aim to describe clinical presentation and management of a large series of polyps occurring in a Mitrofanoff channel. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients that were treated for polyps in a Mitrofanoff at our institution. Information was collected regardin

A cross-sectional analysis of the urine microbiome of children with neuropathic bladders.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing a urinary tract infection (UTI) from asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) in children with neuropathic bladders is difficult. Currently used markers of infection, such as the routine urinalysis, lack specificity for UTI in this population. The urinary microbiome may help differentiate these states. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to describe the baseline microbiome in children with neuropathic bladders, and to determine if differences exist among the urine microbiomes of children with neuropathic bladders who have negative urine cultures, ASB, or UTI. STUDY DES

The Indiana experience with artificial urinary sphincters in children and young adults.

PURPOSE: We reviewed a 22-year single institutional experience with the artificial urinary sphincter in children and adolescents. To our knowledge this report represents the largest series in the world in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1980 and 2002, 142 patients underwent implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter, of whom 93 males and 41 females with a median age of 10 years (range 3 to 39) were available for analysis. A total of 59 patients initially received an AMS 742/792 (American Medical Systems, Inc., Minnetonka, Minnesota) artificial urinary sphincter, of whom 33 were

Hygiene management of intermittent self-catheterization using reusable silicone catheters in people with spinal cord lesions: A cross-sectional Internet survey in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate hygiene management and catheter maintenance of reusable silicone catheters for intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) in Japan and examine their relationship with symptomatic urinary tract infection (sUTI). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional Internet survey of people performing ISC using reusable silicone catheters owing to spinal cord lesions in Japan. Hygiene management and catheter maintenance of reusable silicone catheters and the incidence and frequency of sUTI were evaluated. We also examined the significant risk factors for sUTI. RESULTS: Of 136 respon

Bacteria Producing Extended Spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) in Hospitalized Patients: Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern and its Main Determinants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a growing concern regarding the lack of new antibiotics, especially for multidrug- resistant bacteria tha … two latter antibiotics for eradicating these bacterial infections. On the other hand, a history of urinary catheterization and previous hospitalization were two main determinants of their presence, a finding which em- phasizes the importance of avoiding catheterization and hospitalization of patients with UTIs without proper indications.

Cyanotic nephropathy and use of non-ionic contrast agents during cardiac catherization in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cyanosis with its associated rheologic changes is a known risk factor for glomerular nephropathy. Therefore, contrast-induced nephrotoxicity should be an important consideration for angiographers comparable to diabetics. On the other hand, progressions in diagnostic and interventional techniques have led to expanded indications and a more widespread use of x-ray contrast agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy in the small group of patients with cyanotic heart disease prior to surgical repair. METHODS: We investigated 23 cy

[Delayed spontaneous rupture of the bladder following augmentation enterocystoplasty].

Delayed spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder following augmentation enterocystoplasty is a serious life-threatening complication of uncertain etiology. Multiple factors are believed to contribute to the mechanism of bladder perforation. Ruptured augmented bladders share a common urodynamic pattern of high leak point pressure of the urethra, with sensory and mechanical tolerance of high filling pressure. This combination seems to be the main predisposing factor for spontaneous perforation. Other risk factors, including catheter trauma during intermittent self-catheterization, urinary rete

The invaginated sleeve technique for a continent cystostomy--five years' clinical experience.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the invaginated sleeve technique for continent cystostomy in humans. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over the past 5 years six patients have undergone this operative procedure. An essential principle utilized in the technique is the property of partial thickness bladder grafts to stretch longitudinally, so that each tubularized pedicle graft could be directed transmurally and extended extravesically to reach the skin of the lower abdominal wall. As a consequence a urothelial-lined tract, both extravesically and through the bladder wall, was provided for intermittent self-catheter

[Antegrade stenting of the urinary tract].

Double J-catheters were placed between the renal pelvis and the urinary bladder in 20 ureters in 18 patients with impaired renal function. Retrograde catheterization via cystoscopy was impossible. The mean age of the patients was 69 years. The ureteral obstruction was a malignant tumour in 12 cases, a benign condition in three, and immediate postoperative complication in a further three patients. 11 patients were in the terminal phase of malignant disease. In six cases catheterization was accomplished by a combined antegrade and retrograde technique and a joint effort by radiologist and urolog

[Early urethral catheter removal after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy].

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a widely used treatment method for patients with clinically localized prostate cancer. Posterior reconstruction of urethrovesical anastomosis (UVA) is one of the techniques that provides early recovery of urinary continence after surgery. Changes in the technique of performing posterior reconstruction of UVA may contribute to further improvement of functional results. AIM: To evaluate the functional results of early removal of the urethral catheter (after 3 days) after RARP using a modified surgical technique of performing posterior r

Computational insights in CD58 binding to ASFV CD2v and in silico optimization of nanobody designs against the interface.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterization in the critical care unit often compromises the urinary tract's defense mechanisms of canine patients and potentially leads to hospital-acquired systemic infection. Clinical signs of hospital-acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are frequently absent in critical dogs. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between urinalysis results and CAUTIs in critical care unit dogs and assess the impact of prior antibiotic treatment for underlying diseases and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. METHODS: Twenty-eight dogs underwent ure
