A graphic user interface for the evaluation of knee osteoarthritis (GEKO): an open-source tool for histological grading.

OBJECTIVE: In osteoarthritis (OA) models, histology is commonly used to evaluate the severity of joint damage. Unfortunately, semi-quantitative histological grading systems include some level of subjectivity, and quantitative grading systems can be tedious to implement. The objective of this work is to introduce an open source, graphic user interface (GUI) for quantitative grading of knee OA. METHODS: Inspired by the 2010 OARSI histopathology recommendations for the rat, our laboratory has developed a GUI for the evaluation of knee OA, nicknamed GEKO. In this work, descriptions of the quantit

Design of a new haptic device and experiments in minimally invasive surgical robot.

In this paper, we designed a 8 degrees of freedom (DOFs) haptic device for applications in minimally invasive surgical robot. The device can provide three translational, three rotational and a grasping motion and force feedback capability. It is composed of three parts, including an arm mechanism, a redundant wrist mechanism and a grasper mechanism. The kinematics and gravity compensation algorithms are also detailed in the paper. In addition, the haptic device and a slave surgical robot for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) developed by our lab are integrated as a master-slave surgical robotic

Simple EMG-driven musculoskeletal model enables consistent control performance during path tracing tasks.

Consistent, robust performance is critical for the utility and user-acceptance of neurally-controlled powered upper limb prostheses. We preliminarily evaluated the performance consistency of an electromyography (EMG)-driven controller based on a two degree-of-freedom musculoskeletal hand model, whose simplified structure is more practical for real-time prosthesis control than existing, complex models. Parameters of four virtual muscles were computed by numerical optimization from an able-bodied subject's kinematic and EMG data collected during wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) flexion/extens

Development of the Virtual Physical Assessment Learning Material That Allows the Learners to Check Drug Efficacy and Early Detection of Adverse Effects through Virtual Experience.

We utilized the information and communication technology to develop the physical assessment (PA) learning materials in the virtual experience type. This learning material consists of two parts which include case learning and basic learning. We created example scenarios about various conditions that a pharmacist may experience in medical scenes such as in a hospital ward, community pharmacy, home, and drugstore. Illustrations of a virtual patient's avatar before and after taking the medicines were incorporated in the learning materials. The virtual training includes a stethoscope that was used

Immersive simulated reality scenarios for enhancing students' experience of people with learning disabilities across all fields of nurse education.

Poor preparation of nurses, regarding learning disabilities can have devastating consequences. High-profile reports and the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements led this University to introduce Shareville into the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing curriculum. Shareville is a virtual environment developed at Birmingham City University, in which student nurses learn from realistic, problem-based scenarios featuring people with learning disabilities. Following the implementation of the resource an evaluation of both staff and student experience was undertaken. Students reported that pr

Ultrasound elastography of the supraspinatus tendon guided by US-MRI virtual navigation.

BACKGROUND: A virtual navigation system (VNS) can combine two imaging modalities for synchronous observation and can be beneficial for diagnosis and treatment. Ultrasound elastography (UE) can distinguish between soft and hard tissues. However, the application of UE to musculoskeletal structures is rare. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate UE of the supraspinatus tendon using ultrasound-magnetic resonance imaging (US-MRI) virtual navigation. METHODS: Sixty patients with an ache in the shoulder were diagnosed with supraspinatus tendon injuries using MRI. US-MRI virtual navigation was used to identify lesi

Do conversations with virtual avatars increase feelings of social anxiety?

Virtual reality (VR) technology provides a way to conduct exposure therapy with patients with social anxiety. However, the primary limitation of current technology is that the operator is limited to pre-programed avatars that cannot be controlled to interact/converse with the patient in real time. The current study piloted new technology allowing the operator to directly control the avatar (including speaking) during VR conversations. Using an incomplete repeated measures (VR vs. in vivo conversation) design and random starting order with rotation counterbalancing, participants (N = 26) provid

Triggers of fear: perceptual cues versus conceptual information in spider phobia.

OBJECTIVE: Fear reactions in spider-phobic patients can be activated by specific perceptual cues or by conceptual fear-related information. Matching perceptual fear cues and fear-related information were expected to result in maximal fear responses, perceptual fear cues alone in less fear, and information alone in the weakest responses. METHOD: We used virtual reality to manipulate the available cues and information. Forty-eight phobic patients and 48 healthy participants were repeatedly exposed to either a perceptual cue, information, or a combination of both. RESULTS: In conditions with a

Mice discriminate between stationary and moving 2D shapes: application to the object recognition task to increase attention.

Selective attention can be assessed with the novel object recognition (NOR) test. In the standard version of this test the selection of objects to be used is critical. We created a modified version of NOR, the virtual object recognition test (VORT) in mice, where the 3D objects were replaced with highly discriminated geometrical shapes and presented on two 3.5-inch widescreen displays. No difference in the discrimination index (from 5min to 96h of inter-trial) was found between NOR and VORT. Scopolamine and mecamylamine decreased the discrimination index. Conversely, the discrimination index i

Auditory-visual integration of emotional signals in a virtual environment for cynophobia.

Cynophobia (dog phobia) has both visual and auditory relevant components. In order to investigate the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) exposure-based treatment for cynophobia, we studied the efficiency of auditory-visual environments in generating presence and emotion. We conducted an evaluation test with healthy participants sensitive to cynophobia in order to assess the capacity of auditory-visual virtual environments (VE) to generate fear reactions. Our application involves both high fidelity visual stimulation displayed in an immersive space and 3D sound. This specificity enables us to pre

Development of a comprehensive, validated pharmacophore hypothesis for anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF) inhibitors using genetic algorithms, Pareto scoring, and structural biology.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF), an 89-kDa zinc hydrolase secreted by the bacilli, is the toxin component chiefly responsible for pathogenesis and has been a popular target for rational and structure-based drug design. Although hundreds of small-molecule compounds have been designed to target the LF active site, relatively few reported inhibitors have exhibited activity in cell-based assays, and no LF inhibitor is currently available to treat or prevent anthrax. This study presents a new pharm

Monkey steering responses reveal rapid visual-motor feedback.

The neural mechanisms underlying primate locomotion are largely unknown. While behavioral and theoretical work has provided a number of ideas of how navigation is controlled, progress will require direct physiolgical tests of the underlying mechanisms. In turn, this will require development of appropriate animal models. We trained three monkeys to track a moving visual target in a simple virtual environment, using a joystick to control their direction. The monkeys learned to quickly and accurately turn to the target, and their steering behavior was quite stereotyped and reliable. Monkeys typic

Brief report: an online support intervention: perceptions of adolescents with physical disabilities.

Adolescents with cerebral palsy and spina bifida report restricted interactions with peers and gaps in social support. A pilot online support intervention offered interactions with peers. Five mentors with cerebral palsy or spina bifida and 22 adolescents with the same disabilities met weekly online for 25 group sessions over six months. Participants completed quantitative measures of loneliness, sense of community, self-perceptions, coping, and social support prior to intervention, post-intervention, and delayed post-intervention. Semi-structured qualitative interviews elicited perceptions of

Virtual reality imaging technique in percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy for intractable trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is the most common facial neuralgia, and is extremely painful. We evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous controlled radiofrequency trigeminal rhizotomy (RFTR) assisted by a virtual reality (VR) imaging technique for idiopathic TN. A total of 2769 patients with TN underwent RFTR procedures between June 1986 and March 2007, with VR assisted guiding and electrode positioning in 26 patients from January 2006 to March 2007. A laminal basicranial CT scan (2 mm slice, 16 slices/s) was used during RFTR. The three-dimensional (3D) position of the electrode needle tip and t

The use of virtual reality in acrophobia research and treatment.

Acrophobia, or fear of heights, is a widespread and debilitating anxiety disorder affecting perhaps 1 in 20 adults. Virtual reality (VR) technology has been used in the psychological treatment of acrophobia since 1995, and has come to dominate the treatment of numerous anxiety disorders. It is now known that virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) regimens are highly effective for acrophobia treatment. This paper reviews current theoretical understanding of acrophobia as well as the evolution of its common treatments from the traditional exposure therapies to the most recent virtually guided o

The moderation of an early intervention program for anxiety and depression by specific psychological symptoms.

The current study examined the influence of a number of psychological factors on the effectiveness of an early intervention program targeting anxiety and depression in a non-clinical sample of college students. The early intervention program comprised elements of the cognitive-behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (McCullough, 2000) delivered in a 2-hour computer-based educational program. Participants completed measures of depression, anxiety, and general distress prior to the intervention program and then again 8 weeks later. Additionally, participants were assessed for past major depr
