Risk Factors for Recurrence of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. A Clinical Review.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common peripheral vestibular dysfunctions encountered in clinical practice. Although the treatment of BPPV is relatively successful, many patients develop recurrence after treatment. Our purpose is to evaluate the mean recurrence rate and risk factors of BPPV after treatment. A review of the literature on the risk factors of BPPV recurrence was performed. A thorough search was conducted using electronic databases, namely Pubmed, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete and Scopus for studies published from 2000 to 2020. Thirty studies were…

Frontal lobe epilepsy manifesting as vertigo: a case report and literature review.

Frontal lobe epilepsy is a common neurological disorder with a broad spectrum of symptoms. Frontal lobe epilepsy presenting with vertigo is extremely rare, and the relevant pathogenesis remains unclear. Herein, we report a case of frontal lobe epilepsy manifesting as vertigo, and we review the relevant literature. A 34-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of general tonic-clonic seizures. In the month prior to admission, she experienced nocturnal seizures on two occasions. Video electroencephalogram monitoring showed frequent clinical seizures during which the patient felt transient…

Approaching Acute Vertigo With Diplopia: A Rare Skew Deviation in Vestibular Neuritis.

Evaluating the patient with acute constant vertigo or diplopia can be a daunting task for clinicians, who recognize that such symptoms can be the manifestation of potentially devastating disorders like stroke but may be uncomfortable eliciting and interpreting the key symptoms and subtle signs that distinguish dangerous from benign causes. We present a novel and highly instructive case of a patient with acute vertigo and binocular diplopia from a large skew deviation due to vestibular neuritis. As the case unfolds, text and video commentary guide the clinician through the important elements of…
