Aqueous solutions of sodium tribromoacetate (NaCBr3CO2) and its corresponding acid (CBr3COOH) have been studied using Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The spectra of the species in solution were assigned according to symmetry Cs. Characteristic bands of CBr3CO2-(aq) and the tribromoacetic acid, CBr3COOH(aq), are discussed. For the hydrated anion, the CO2 group, the symmetric CO2 stretching mode at 1332 cm(-1) and the asymmetric stretching mode at 1651 cm(-1) are characteristic while the CO mode at 1730 cm(-1) is characteristic for the spectra of the acid. A standardised method of assessment of vibration threshold (VT), with a C128-Hz tuning fork (TF), was compared to VT measured with a biothesiometer in normal patients free of neurological disease at four separate bony points. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations of energy transfer from vibrationally excited CO(2) to CCl(4) and CH(2)Cl(2) solvent molecules are performed to identify the efficiency of different energy pathways into the solvent bath. Studying in detail the work performed by the vibrationally excited solute on the different solvent degrees of freedom, it is shown that vibration-to-vibration (V-V) processes are strongly dominant and controlled by those accepting modes which are close in frequency to the CO(2) bend and symmetric stretch vibration.

The FT-IR and Raman spectroscopic analysis of a red powder found in a chest from an officer's cabin during the excavation of the wreck of the 18th Century frigate HMS Pandora have confirmed that the pigment is cinnabar, mercury(II) sulphide. Weaker signals in the Raman spectrum are assignable to a proteinaceous material, such as collagen, typical of a degraded vellum or parchment. Comparison of the Raman spectra with that of a pigmented seal from a 1786 Lieutenant's commission demonstrated that the beeswax component of the seal was not observable.
