Intramuscular myxomas are benign soft-tissue tumors that often develop in the thigh. A 66-year-old woman was referred with an abnormal shadow on chest roentgenogram. The tumor was well defined and smooth and originated from the second intercostal space. Positron emission tomography showed no accumulation of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose in the tumor. The patient attended the outpatient department for follow-up care. Because the mass grew slightly after 52 months, the patient underwent complete removal by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. On histopathological examination, the tumor was diagnosed a

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism is changing both in terms of the extent of cervical exploration and in technique. There are many new mini-invasive procedures for neck surgery. We describe our preliminary experience with a technique that combines two mini-invasive procedures--radio-guided and video-assisted parathyroidectomy.
METHODS: Six consecutive patients with no recurrent or persistent primary hyperparathyroidism, no previous cervical operations, and no thyroid pathologies were selected to undergo radio-guided video-assisted parathyroidectomy.
RESULTS:

The standard of care for esophageal malignancies has evolved over the years from open transthoracic esophagectomy to a minimally invasive approach due to the reduction in surgical trauma and significant impact on postoperative outcomes. Minimally invasive approaches include video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. These minimally invasive approaches have an attendant learning curve that early-career surgeons are required to negotiate before achieving proficiency in the procedure. Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury is a particularly significant problem, espec

A patient with a base of tongue tumor was judged to be safe to intubate under general anesthesia, with a new flexible tip "bougie." This enabled rapid and easy navigation around the distorted anatomy caused by the tumor. The bougie's tip can be flexed or extended by activating a slide on the shaft and was intended for use with the hyperangulated blade of a videolaryngoscope.

Video-assisted mediastinoscopy (VAM) is the most commonly used invasive method for the preoperative mediastinal staging of lung cancer and for the diagnosis of other mediastinal diseases. However, VAM has the risk of causing life-threatening bleeding consequent to the specific mediastinal anatomy. We adopted the ultrasonic technique for VAM biopsies that can easily distinguish the lymph nodes from the surrounding great vessels and thus makes the procedure easier and safer.

The proportion of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) is continuously increasing. The main areas of clinical application are anatomical lung resections with lymphadenectomy and resection of mediastinal tumors. Especially in the area of the thymus robot-assisted procedures can now be considered the gold standard. Overall, the limitations of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) can be overcome by the use of robot-assisted surgery and thus a larger proportion of patients can be treated with minimally invasive procedures. The safety of the RATS procedure has been repeatedly demonstrated,

Classic surgical interruption of patent ductus arteriosus was partially replaced by transcatheter endovascular closure in 1971. We describe a new technique for ductus closure by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical interruption, derived from video-assisted endoscopic surgery. With the patient under general anesthesia and intubated, two 5 mm holes were made through the left thoracic wall. A video camera and specially devised surgical tools were introduced; such as scissors, dissectors, and clip appliers. The ductus was dissected, and two titanium clips were applied, completely interrupting the

BACKGROUND: Resternotomy still carries an important risk for an already high-risk population. Re-entry injuries may lead to massive bleeding, which can be difficult to control due to poor accessibility. The aim of the study was to assess early outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis, as well as safety and feasibility.
METHODS: Forty-five patients received a video-assisted thoracoscopic adhesiolysis before resternotomy between April 1, 2016 and January 1, 2019. Records were reviewed for demographics, perioperative and early postoperative (Postop) outcomes.
RESULTS: The median ag

During robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer, a ureteral injury occurred in two women. Both injuries were repaired successfully with robot-assisted surgery. One of the injuries and its repair are shown in an edited video clip. Ureteral injury is a known complication of gynecologic surgery (Hoffman in OBG Manag 20:16-28, 2008). Transection of the pelvic ureter proximal to the parametrium may be repaired by reapproximation or reimplantation. Robot-assisted surgery has recently been established as useful for the performance of ureteral surgery (Kasturi et al. in Urology 79:680-683, 2012;

Ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenomas or hyperplasias account for up to 25% of primary hyperparathyroidism cases. Most abnormal parathyroid glands are found in the superior mediastinum within the thymus and can be removed through a cervical incision; however, a few of these glands are not accessible using standard cervical surgical approaches. Surgical resection has traditionally been performed via median sternotomy or thoracotomy. However, recent advancement in video-assisted thoracic surgery techniques has decreased the need for sternotomy or thoracotomy to remove these ectopic parathyroi

BACKGROUND: The arguments for applying minimally invasive techniques are, besides cosmetic results, reduced access trauma and less postoperative pain. In thyroid surgery, cosmetic aspects are gaining importance. Whether minimally invasive endoscopic thyroid surgery is less painful has not been shown yet.
METHOD: In this study, we analyse the outcome of 246 patients who underwent cervical endoscopic video-assisted thyroid surgery (CEViTS) regarding the surgery itself, their postoperative pain and satisfaction with the procedure.
RESULTS: CEViTS is routinely performed in our hospital. In this

The objective of this video is to show the feasibility of secondary cytoreductive surgery for recurrent high-grade serous ovarian cancer. The procedure targets recurrences in the cardiophrenic lymph nodes and the right diaphragm involving the right basal pleura. Using video-assisted thoracoscopy, the thoracic recurrences were dissected and removed. Minimally invasive thoracic secondary cytoreductive surgery proved to be safe and feasible and facilitated rapid post-operative recovery, ensuring timely access to subsequent second-line adjuvant chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: The European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) has proposed a revised preoperative lymph node staging guideline for patients with potentially resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We aimed to assess the validity of this revised ESTS guideline and survival results in our patient cohort.
METHODS: A total of 571 patients with potentially resectable NSCLC seen between January 2004 and November 2013 were included in the study. The preoperative mediastinal staging was performed by video-assisted cervical mediastinoscopy or video-assisted mediastinoscopic lymphadenectomy in all

Thoraic splenosis is a rare entity after splenic and diaphragmatic injury. We report on a patient who had left pulmonary masses on a routine chest roentgenogram. It was impossible to rule out the possibility of other tumors or malignancies from past history, radiographic findings and needle biopsy. The patient underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The resected tumor was diagnosed as the splenic tissue. This represents the first reported case, that diagnosed by video-assisted thoracoscopic resection, of thoracic splenosis. The course of dissemination of the splenic tissue to chest i

Videothoracoscopy represents a valid and useful approach in some patients with blunt chest trauma or penetrating thoracic injury. This technique has been validated for the treatment of clotted hemothorax or posttraumatic empyema, traumatic chylothorax, traumatic pneumothorax, in patients with hemodynamic stability. Moreover, it is probably the most reliable technique for the diagnosis of diaphragmatic injury. It is also useful for the extraction of intrathoracic projectiles and foreign bodies. This technique might be useful in hemodynamically stable patients with continued bleeding or for the

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted endoscopy has been applied frequently in the management of a variety of surgical diseases. However, it has rarely been applied in mitral valve surgery.
METHODS: We report 2 patients who received emergency operations for thrombosis of a mitral prosthesis (patient 1, a 68-year-old man) and acute mitral regurgitation due to rupture of anterior chordae (patient 2, a 75-year-old woman). They both had severe congestive heart failure. Cardiogenic shock was noted in patient 2. The mitral valve was approached through a right anterior minithoracotomy with the aid of an endosc
