Early predictors of reading in three groups of native Spanish speakers: Spaniards, Gypsies, and Latin Americans.

The main purpose of the study reported here was to examine the early linguistic predictors of reading (e.g., Knowledge About Print, Listening Comprehension, Receptive Vocabulary, Rapid Naming of Objects and Letters, and Phonological Awareness), for a sample of 77 Spaniards, 48 Latinos, and 30 Gypsies kindergartens (mean age = 5 years 9 months) living in Spain. The relative contribution of ethnic background, neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES), age, and gender was assessed. Findings revealed that ethnic background, neighborhood SES, and age differentially predicted children's pre-literacy …

Developmental dyslexia: the visual attention span deficit hypothesis.

The visual attention (VA) span is defined as the amount of distinct visual elements which can be processed in parallel in a multi-element ar … ntribution of the VA span to reading performance remains even after controlling IQ, verbal fluency, vocabulary and single letter identification skills, in addition to phoneme awareness. In both studies, most dyslexic children exhibit a selective phonological or VA span disorder. Overall, these findings support a multi-factorial view of developmental dyslexia …

Semantic and phonological skills in predicting reading development: from 3-16 years of age.

The present longitudinal study investigated the relationship between pre-school semantic skills (vocabulary, comprehension and sentence construction), phonological awareness and later word decoding and reading comprehension skills. More than 200 Danish children were followed from a speech therapist screening at the age of three, through a phonological group screening at six, word decoding tests in Grade 2, sentence reading tests in Grades 3, 4, and 6, and to a text reading test in Grade 9 (age 16). The predictor variables consisted of both standardized test results, professional ratings, and a…

Do individuals with Williams syndrome have bizarre semantics? Evidence for lexical organization using an on-line task.

Williams syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, has attracted a great deal of debate concerning the purported intactness of language in the face of other serious cognitive deficits. As more in-depth studies of specific aspects of WS language have emerged, the notion of a preserved language module has been seriously challenged. Although WS vocabulary scores are often impressive, several investigators have claimed the WS semantics are aberrant. All studies hitherto have been based on off-line experiments which necessarily involve metalinguistic processes. This clearly affects the performance o…

Distinct Neural Signatures of Novel Word-Referent Mapping in Monolingual and Bilingual Toddlers.

Evidence suggests that bilingualism impacts children's lexical and brain development. Yet, the development of the brain's language network in early childhood-a period marked by rapid vocabulary growth-remains poorly understood, particularly with respect to differences between bilingual and monolingual children. This study used eye tracking and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine the cortical representations of lexical acquisition in frontal and temporal lobes. We relied on a fast mapping task that included three trial types: Familiar (familiar label-referent mapping; e.g.,…

Caregivers Use Joint Attention to Support Sign Language Acquisition in Deaf Children.

Children's ability to share attention with another social partner (joint attention) plays an important role in language development. However … tics of these joint attention episodes were significantly correlated with the children's expressive vocabulary size, mirroring the patterns observed for spoken language acquisition. We also found that sign familiarity as well as the order of mention of object labels affected the timing of naming events within joint attention. Our results suggest that caregiv …

From word superiority to word inferiority: visual processing of letters and words in pure alexia.

Visual processing and naming of individual letters and short words were investigated in four patients with pure alexia. To test processing at different levels, the same stimuli were studied across a naming task and a visual perception task. The normal word superiority effect was eliminated in both tasks for all patients, and this pattern was more pronounced in the more severely affected patients. The relationship between performance with single letters and words was, however, not straightforward: One patient performed within the normal range on the letter perception task, while being severely

Speech disruptions in the sentence formulation of school-age children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Many school-age children with specific language impairment produce sentences that appear to conform to the adult grammar. It may be premature to conclude from this, however, that their language formulation ability is age appropriate. AIMS: To determine whether a more subtle measure of language use, speech disruptions during sentence formulation, might serve to distinguish children with specific language impairment from their typically developing peers at an age when grammatical accuracy was high. We analysed the rate of speech disruptions in simple sentence production in school-ag

A comparison of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand-Perinatal Death Classification system and relevant condition at death stillbirth classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirths comprise two-thirds of all perinatal mortality. A classification system with low 'unexplained' stillbirth rates is important when developing prevention strategies. AIMS: This study aims to (i) determine whether the proportion of stillbirths classified as 'unexplained' is reduced, by using the relevant condition at death (ReCoDe) stillbirth classification system, compared with the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand - Perinatal Death Classification (PSANZ-PDC) system; and (ii) compare the proportion of stillbirths attributed to fetal growth restriction and ot

Brain responses to lexical-semantic priming in children at-risk for dyslexia.

Deviances in early event-related potential (ERP) components reflecting auditory and phonological processing are well-documented in children at familial risk for dyslexia. However, little is known about brain responses which index processing in other linguistic domains such as lexicon, semantics and syntax in this group. The present study investigated effects of lexical-semantic priming in 20- and 24-month-olds at-risk for dyslexia and typically developing controls in two ERP experiments. In both experiments an early component assumed to reflect facilitated lexical processing for primed words w

A case of impaired verbalization but preserved gesticulation of motion events.

In most cultures, most of the time, when people talk they gesture. We took advantage of a rare opportunity to explore the relation between the verbalization and gesticulation of motion events by studying Marcel, an English speaker with a unilateral left-hemisphere lesion affecting frontal, parietal, and temporal sectors of the perisylvian cortex. Marcel has intact semantic knowledge of the three major classes of words that are commonly used in English descriptions of motion events - specifically, concrete nouns, action verbs, and spatial prepositions - as well as intact syntactic knowledge of

Naming of grammatical classes in frontotemporal dementias: linguistic and non linguistic factors contribute to noun-verb dissociation.

We studied noun and verb naming in three main variants of frontotemporal dementia: the frontal variant(Fv-FTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and semantic dementia (SD). We further distinguished PPA in nonfluent and fluent forms and restricted diagnosis of SD to subjects with progressive semantic breakdown leading to agnosia for words and objects. Fv-FTD and nonfluent-PPA named objects better than actions, SD showed an inverse dissociation and no specific pattern emerged in fluent-PPA. In this last group, in spite of the broad definition of fluent aphasia, quite heterogeneous patterns of l

Right hemisphere sensitivity to word- and sentence-level context: evidence from event-related brain potentials.

Researchers using lateralized stimuli have suggested that the left hemisphere is sensitive to sentence-level context, whereas the right hemisphere (RH) primarily processes word-level meaning. The authors investigated this message-blind RH model by measuring associative priming with event-related brain potentials (ERPs). For word pairs in isolation, associated words elicited more positive ERPs than unassociated words with similar magnitudes and onset latencies in both visual fields. Embedded in sentences, these same pairs showed large sentential context effects in both fields. Small effects of

Implicit alcohol-related cognitions in a clinical sample of heavy drinkers.

Patients undergoing treatment in an alcohol-rehabilitation clinic performed an Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (EAST) and two Implicit Association Tests (IATs) that were designed to measure implicit attitudes toward alcohol or implicit alcohol-arousal associations. The EAST and IAT data indicated that patients had a more negative implicit attitude toward alcohol than toward softdrinks and possessed strong implicit alcohol-arousal associations. Our results replicate and extend those of Wiers et al. (J. Abnormal Psychol 111 (2002) 648).
