Shadows in the Light: Moonshine's White Lightning and Vision Loss.

Methanol poisoning remains an important cause of severe metabolic and neurologic toxicity, most commonly resulting from ingestion of illicit or improperly distilled alcoholic beverages such as Moonshine. We report a case of acute methanol toxicity following Moonshine ingestion, presenting with central nervous system manifestations and visual symptoms. The patient experienced rapid clinical and visual improvement after timely treatment with fomepizole and emergent hemodialysis. In addition to standard therapy, corticosteroids were administered as an adjunctive treatment for visual involvement.

Sleep Health and White Matter Integrity in the UK Biobank.

Many people experience impaired sleep health, yet knowledge about its neurobiological correlates is limited. As previous studies have found associations between white matter integrity and several sleep traits, white matter integrity could be causally implicated in poor sleep health. However, these studies were often limited by small sample sizes. In this study, we examine associations between multiple indices of white matter integrity and sleep health in 29,114 UK Biobank participants. Late chronotype, daytime sleepiness, insomnia symptoms and, most extensively, long sleep duration were indepe…

An Evaluation of White Matter Intensities in Patients with Pediatric Migraine.

Background and Objectives: This study aims to assess white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in pediatric migraine patients and to elucidate the pathophysiology of the disease. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 patients diagnosed with migraine and 28 healthy individuals undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans for various reasons in our hospital between September 2019 and April 2023 were included in the study. We evaluated the presence, number, locations, and volumetric measurement of WMHs and the relationship between hyperintensity and attack profiles in migraine patients. Results: W…

White Blood Cells in Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Context of Neuroinflammation.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a multifactorial problem for modern neurology, due to their unknown etiology, difficult diagnostics, and, consequently, the lack of causal methods of treatment. Rising life expectancy exacerbates the problem by increasing the number of patients, as most of them fall ill in older age. Recent research shows that inflammation, both peripheral and neuroinflammation, may take part in the pathogenetic pathways of disease development. Some studies suggest that the initiation of the process occurs outside of the nervous system and is causally related to the immune system
