Cortical sources of resting state EEG rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have been inconclusive whether dominant resting state alpha rhythms differ in amplitude in dyslexic subjects when compared to control subjects, being these rhythms considered as a reflection of effective cortical neural synchronization and cognition. Here we used a validated EEG source estimation to test the hypothesis that resting state alpha rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic subjects and are related to reading deficits. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) data were recorded in 26 dyslexics (12 males, mean age of 11 years ± 0.5 standard

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. I. Attention-deficit disorder, learning disorders, and school problems.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common, hereditary, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood. To determine the frequency of various behavioral manifestations, we have compared 47 random normal controls to 246 patients with TS, 17 with attention-deficit disorder (ADD), and 15 with ADD secondary to a TS gene (ADD 2(0) TS). All subjects were examined prospectively with a 425-item questionnaire based on the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III). The TS patients were divided into grade 1 (too mild to treat [17.5%]), grade 2 (requiring treatme

Remediating cognitive inflexibility in obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa neither moderates nor mediates treatment effects: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are conditions associated with poor cognitive flexibility, a factor considered to interfere with treatment, but research into the relationship between cognitive flexibility and treatment outcome is limited. This study explores whether baseline measures of cognitive flexibility predict outcomes in OCD and AN, evaluates whether changes in these measures contribute to treatment outcome, and evaluates the effectiveness of adjunctive cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in improving cognitive flexibility. METHODS: This seconda

Evaluation of Olfactory Fossa Depth Using Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory fossa is a depression in anterior cranial cavity whose floor is formed by cribriform plate of ethmoid bone and is susceptible to injury during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), especially when fossa is deep. Understanding of patient's ethmoid roof anatomy and its possible variations is crucial for countering possible complications during functional endoscopic sinus surgery. So, objective of this study was to evaluate olfactory fossa depth. METHODS: In this descriptive cross sectional study, olfactory fossa depth was measured on Computed Tomographic images of 28

Prefrontal Activation During Effortful Processing Differentiates Memory Abilities in Adults with Memory Complaints.

BACKGROUND: Identifying individuals at increased risks for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for early intervention. Memory complaints are associated with brain abnormalities characteristic of AD in cognitively normal older people. However, the utility of memory complaints for predicting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD onset remains controversial, likely due to the heterogeneous nature of this construct. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether prefrontal oxygenation changes measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during an arduous cognitive task, previously sho

Sexual Abuse of Elderly Victims Investigated by the Police: From Motives to Crime Characteristics.

Elderly sexual abuse has been almost completely ignored from researchers and practitioners alike. However, the occidental population is aging and living longer, suggesting that the number of cases of elderly sexual abuse should increase. Moreover, elderly sexual assaults have been described as being more violent, resulting in more severe injuries, and are more frequently committed by strangers, making criminal investigations more difficult to solve. The current study aims to identify the various motivations associated with elderly sexual abuse and to test whether it is possible to link offende

[Management of primary congenital megaureter with early diagnosis].

We present our follow-up protocol of congenital megaureter (PCM) diagnosed early thanks to showing prenatal ultrasound the dilatation in the urinary system. 47 PCM were studied retrospectively in 35 babies, out of 240 cases of prenatal renal dilatation, from 1984 to 1993. The final diagnosis was established with the early use of ultrasound, cystography, intravenous urography (IVU) and isotope test. The latter two gave hints as to the existence of obstruction, which was the main criterion for early surgery to be prescribed. The surgical treatment, when it was necessary, consisted of ureter reim

The detection of raised levels of IgM to Proteus mirabilis in sera from patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

An analysis by ELISA of 100 rheumatoid factor (RF)-positive sera selected at random from a collection of sera from patients with various auto-immune diseases and joint pains, and 100 RF-negative sera from the same collection matched by patient age and gender, showed that the RF-positive sera had highly significantly (p < 0.0001) raised levels of IgM antibody, but not IgG antibody, to Proteus mirabilis over those of the RF-negative sera. This response was subsequently found to be associated with sera from patients who clinically had rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sera from the RA patients had signi

Differential diagnosis of HTLV-I-associated myelopathy and multiple sclerosis in Iranian patients.

Two Iranian patients with chronic progressive spastic paraparesis and urinary dysfunction were referred to our hospital with the presumptive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Routine CSF analysis and magnetic resonance imaging of the two patients were only partially characteristic of MS. Testing for antibodies to human T-cell leukemia virus type I [HTLV-I] in serum using a radioimmune precipitation assay revealed antibodies to HTLV-I in both patients. The infection with HTLV-I was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and liquid hybridization analysis using primers to the tax/rex re

[Aorto-septal angulation: a new cause of disorder in left ventricular ejection? (a 2-dimensional echocardiographic study apropos of 66 cases)].

Aorto-septal angulation is defined as an acute angled connection between the anterior aortic wall and the interventricular septum. It is quite a common 2D-echo finding. Does it correspond to a simple anatomical curiosity or is it associated with certain well defined diseases? Could it be a cause of obstruction to left ventricular ejection? To try to answer these questions, 66 consecutive cases of aorto-septal angulation were analysed; the echocardiographic and clinical data were correlated. The dynamic features of angulation were studied during the cardiac cycle and the investigations were com

Objective analysis of vocal warm-up with special reference to ergonomic factors.

Vocal warm-up was studied in terms of changes in voice parameters during a 45-minute vocal loading session in the morning. The voices of a randomly chosen group of 40 female and 40 male young students were loaded by having them read a novel aloud. The exposure groups (5 females and 5 males per cell) consisted of eight combinations of the following factors: (1) low (25 +/- 5%) or high (65 +/- 5%) relative humidity of ambient air; (2) low [< 65 dB(SPL)] or high [> 65 dB(SPL)] speech output level during vocal loading; (3) sitting or standing posture during vocal loading. Two sets of voice samples

High folic acid or folate combined with low vitamin B-12 status: potential but inconsistent association with cognitive function in a nationally representative cross-sectional sample of US older adults participating in the NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Potential safety concerns relative to impaired cognitive function may exist when high folic acid exposures are combined with low vitamin B-12 status. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the relation of the coexistence of high folate and low vitamin B-12 status with cognitive function, utilizing various definitions of "high" folate status. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from older adults (≥60 y; n = 2420) from the 2011-2014 NHANES were analyzed. High folate status was defined as unmetabolized serum folic acid (UMFA) > 1 nmol/L or serum total folate > 74.1 nmol/L, and low vitamin B-12 s

Factors that influence outcomes and device use for pediatric cochlear implant recipients with unilateral hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Candidacy criteria for cochlear implantation in the United States has expanded to include children with single-sided deafness (SSD) who are at least 5 years of age. Pediatric cochlear implant (CI) users with SSD experience improved speech recognition with increased daily device use. There are few studies that report the hearing hour percentage (HHP) or the incidence of non-use for pediatric CI recipients with SSD. The aim of this study was to investigate factors that impact outcomes in children with SSD who use CIs. A secondary aim was to identify factors that impact daily device

Perceived charismatic leadership and work engagement among higher education teachers: differential indirect associations through professional efficacy, belonging, and values.

INTRODUCTION: Positive leadership is frequently associated with work engagement, but it remains unclear whether teachers' perceptions of displayed charismatic leadership behaviors are directly associated with engagement or are linked to it through distinct professional resources. This study examined the indirect associations connecting perceived charismatic leadership with teachers' work engagement through professional efficacy, professional belonging, and professional values. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 248 higher education teachers recruited through co

Kinematic correlates of early speech motor changes in cognitively intact APOE-ε4 carriers: a preliminary study using a color-word interference task.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia and a major public health challenge. In the absence of a cure, accurate and innovative early diagnostic methods are essential for proactive life and healthcare planning. Speech metrics have shown promising potential for identifying individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, prompting investigation into whether speech motor features can detect elevated risk even prior to cognitive decline. This preliminary study examined whether speech kinematic features measured during a color-word interference task cou

Impact of an optimized care model for advanced HIV disease: a non-randomized cluster study in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Despite significant advances in HIV diagnosis and access to ART, many patients still present with advanced HIV disease (AHD). We assessed the effect of an optimized AHD care package on the screening and diagnosis of opportunistic diseases among clients enrolled in AHD care. METHODS: This non-randomized cluster design was conducted using a hub-and-spoke model. Twenty-two health facilities, including hub facilities (eight hub sites) and their associated spoke facilities (14 spoke sites), were purposively selected as intervention sites (IS) across three districts in Malawi. Relations between communication and motor skills in young children with Down syndrome: a brief report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience delays across multiple developmental domains, including communication and motor coordination. While prior studies have investigated these domains separately, few have examined their interrelation using population-level data. This study aimed to evaluate (1) differences between young children with DS and typically developing (TD) peers in early communication skills and motor-coordination difficulties, and (2) whether the relationship between these domains is similar across groups. METHODS: This brief report used data from th
