Opportunities for improving the safety of dairy parlor workers.

One aspect of a successful dairy business is attracting and retaining skilled staff. The ability to do this is influenced by workplace attractiveness, one aspect of which is worker comfort and safety. Working with heavy machinery and animals makes dairy farming a dangerous occupation relative to many other sectors. Milking is the most time-consuming task on pasture-based dairy farms, and the parlor is the logical site of a number of injuries, although little is known about their causes or their relationship to parlor design and management. To investigate worker safety further, we conducted an

Malpractice claims after arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery in France: a 10-year analysis of 73 expert-reviewed cases.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery has become one of the most frequently performed shoulder procedures in France. However, medico-legal claims following arthroscopic shoulder surgery remain poorly described in the French setting. The present study addressed the following questions: (1) What are the main reasons for claims after arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery? (2) What proportion of cases result in compensation and/or surgeon liability being upheld? (3) Are claim characteristics associated with a higher probability of surgeon liability being retained? (4) Which patient-, surgeon-,

Evaluation of Multi-Stakeholder Perspectives on the Preparedness of Ghana's Animal Health Services for African Swine Fever Control: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly fatal viral disease of pigs that has persisted in Ghana since its first introduction in 1999, causing recurrent outbreaks with devastating socioeconomic consequences for livelihoods and food security. Despite control measures implemented by Ghana's veterinary services, outbreaks continue, reflecting critical gaps in national preparedness and institutional support. This study assessed the preparedness of Ghana's animal health services to manage and control ASF. METHODS: A mixed-method of cross-sectional design was employed, combining s

Women's wrist and elbow at work: analysis of acute injuries and cumulative trauma disorders to improve ergonomics in female-dominated activities.

The aim of this study is to analyse women's wrist and elbow acute work injuries together with cumulative trauma disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and epicondylitis. Five years records (2015-2019) on women's wrist/elbow acute work injuries and CTS/epicondilytis, from Italian National Compensation Authority, were collected and pooled all together as 'dis-ac' (disorders + acute) events. A statistical analysis was performed in comparing the different female-dominated work sectors. Results showed that hairdressing/laundry sector was associated with the highest risk for wrist acute wor

Delayed repair of distal biceps tendon ruptures is successful: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The literature has shown an increased complication rate with a delay to surgical repair of acute distal biceps tendon ruptures; however, little has been documented regarding the outcome of delayed repairs. This case-control study compared a study cohort of delayed (>21 days) distal biceps tendon repairs with a control cohort repaired acutely (<21 days). METHODS: Sixteen delayed repair cases were reviewed and matched with acute controls (1:3) based on repair technique, age, and workers' compensation status. The delayed cohort was reviewed and completed isometric strength testing an…

[Occupational asthma related to wheat. Presentation of one case].

Allergy to wheat proteins is the most common type of occupational asthma caused by cereals. Its incidence based on international reports is about 1-2.4/1000 cases among workers per year. In Mexico there is an underdiagnosis of occupational asthma > 99%. During the period 2009-2012 we recorded 5 cases of occupational asthma, 40% of them caused by cereals. This is the case of a 38 year old male, baker for 24 years exposed to wheat flour. In his workplace he used to wear surgical mask and there are no exhaust fans. He initiated 10 years ago with sneezing, itching, hyaline rhinorrhea and nasal obs

Correlation of patellar articular lesions with results from anteromedial tibial tubercle transfer.

This retrospective study determined that the outcome from anteromedialization of the tibial tubercle correlates well with the location of pa … ificant correlation between the Outerbridge grading of the patellar lesion and the overall results. Workers' compensation issues diminished the likelihood of a satisfactory outcome by 19%; however, this was not statistically significant. This is the first study to correlate the patellar articular cartilage lesion with outcome after tibial tubercle transfer.

Cutaneous nerve fibre depletion in vibration white finger.

Vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome is the episodic blanching of the fingers in response to cold occurring in those who work with hand held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent paraesthesiae and pain are common in the hands and arms and these occur independently from the 'white attacks'. Symptoms can become severe enough to warrant a change of occupation. Industrial compensation may be awarded for vibration white finger but, at present, no simple or reliable objective diagnostic test is available. Calcitonin gene-re

Association Between Cutaneous Functional Units and Impairment Ratings After Burn Injury.

Burn injuries can cause lasting functional impairment, often requiring formal impairment ratings for workers' compensation cases. Cutaneous functional units (CFUs), which represent skin areas involved in single-joint motion, may better capture functional impact than TBSA, yet they are not included in current impairment rating guidelines. This study evaluated relationships between initial TBSA, initial CFUs, final scar CFUs, and impairment ratings, hypothesizing that scar burden measured by CFUs would be strongly associated with impairment. A retrospective review was conducted for 78 burn patie…

How community-based health workers fulfil their roles in epidemic disease surveillance: a case study from Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, Burkina Faso adopted a new community-based model for disease surveillance, appointing two community-based health workers (CBHWs) per village. The CBHWs play a crucial yet under-researched role in Burkina Faso's health system. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing their practices in relation to their official roles in epidemic disease surveillance. METHODS: Conducted in the Dandé Health District in southwestern Burkina Faso, this qualitative study collected data through semi-structured interviews with 15 CBHWs and 25 health professionals, supplemented by obse

IMU-based human activity recognition and payload classification for low-back exoskeletons.

Nowadays, work-related musculoskeletal disorders have a drastic impact on a large part of the world population. In particular, low-back pain counts as the leading cause of absence from work in the industrial sector. Robotic exoskeletons have great potential to improve industrial workers' health and life quality. Nonetheless, current solutions are often limited by sub-optimal control systems. Due to the dynamic environment in which they are used, failure to adapt to the wearer and the task may be limiting exoskeleton adoption in occupational scenarios. In this scope, we present a deep-learning-

Silicosis among gemstone workers in South Africa: tiger's-eye pneumoconiosis.

Six cases of silicosis in workers involved in the processing of semiprecious gem stones have been seen in our clinic since 1976. They had been employed as stone sculptors in lapidaries where they processed tiger's-eye, rose quartz, amethyst, quartz crystal, and a variety of other locally occurring semiprecious stones. In five of the cases, exposure was in small and poorly regulated lapidaries without specific dust control measures. The sixth was detected during the course of a health and hygiene survey (including dust sampling) that was conducted in one of two lapidaries still operating in our

Determinants for acknowledgement of occupational related causes among Italian police officers.

The aim of this work was to evaluate associations between invalidating health problems and the main demographic and professional determinants among the employees of the Police Headquarter of the Province of Foggia (South Italy). Personal records of the employees on active service between November 2009 and May 2010 (N. 798 files) have been analysed. 241 personal service records reporting at least an acknowledged occupational related cause were examined. Low educational level increases the risk of occupational related causes (OR = 2.03; 95% Cl = 1.03-3.2; p < 0.002). Traumatisms (49.4%) and oste
