In a population-based study including 2463 infants, serum bilirubin measurements were added to the neonatal screening programme for phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyreosis. This screening programme detected 11/17 (65%) of infants with serum bilirubin levels >350 micromol 1(-1), of whom 7 (3 per 1000) were readmitted from home (6 treated with phototherapy). A total of 139 infants (5.6%) received phototherapy. Maternal blood type O occurred significantly more often in term infants treated (30/54; 55.6%) compared with preterm infants treated (32/85; 37.6%) and with blood type O occurrence in

Frequency of sickle cell in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe populations was found to be 1.5 and 14.9% respectively, whereas G-6-PD deficiency was 5.9 and 4.2% respectively. Blood group B was dominant in both the communities. A significantly lower frequency of P. falciparum malaria was observed among sicklers.

The accumulation of Vi-antigen in the human body was studied with the use of such characteristic as the specific adsorption capacity of red blood cells. This parameter was shown to depend on the phenotype in the ABO blood group system. In cases of typhoid fever an increase in the adsorption capacity of red blood cells was observed at the acute period of the disease. These changes were particularly manifest in patients belonging to groups O and A. The authors suggest that the adsorption of the antigen on red blood cells has a definite kinetics related to the dynamics of the infectious process.

The authors have conducted a clinical and epidemiological study on 533 newborn infants with marked jaundice treated with phototherapy. They have considered the incidence of jaundice in relation to sex, etiology, gestational age and weight at birth. The authors have also evaluated the minimum, maximum and mean duration of phototherapy of different groups of newborn infants with hyperbilirubinemia. Finally an estimation of initial, peak and final serum bilirubin concentration has been conducted together with an estimation of hourly increases and decreases of this concentration during phototherap

Human blood groups (ABO) are known to be determined by the terminal glycosyl residues attached to common carbohydrate chains of the red cell surface. N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (A-enzyme) in blood group A persons and galactosyltransferase (B-enzyme) in blood group B persons are responsible for producing A and B substances on the red cell surface, with both enzymes absent in blood group O persons. The plasma transferase (A - and B-) activity was assayed after the complete replacement of the bone marrow of patients with acute leukemia or aplastic anemia by transplantation bone marrow from

A previous investigation has shown that family susceptibility and occupational and family histories have a decisive role in the development of byssinosis among workers exposed to flax dust. Results of investigation of silicosis in 814 male workers exposed to silica-bearing dust showed that family susceptibility has an important role in the development of silicosis among examined workers, and workers whose fathers had an occupational history of exposure to silica-bearing dust were more resistant to the development of the disease than those with non-exposed fathers. The degree of consanguinity o

Since the discovery of the ABO blood group in the early 20th century, more than 300 blood group antigens have been categorized among 35 blood group systems. The molecular basis for most blood group antigens has been determined and demonstrates tremendous genetic diversity, particularly in the ABO and Rh systems. Several blood group genotyping assays have been developed, and 1 platform has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a "test of record," such that no phenotype confirmation with antisera is required. DNA-based red blood cell (RBC) phenotyping can overcome certain limitati

The unprecedentedly swift developments in molecular genetics has opened up a new era in biology and medicine. The powerful methods of recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology are fast moving into the fields of diagnostics and therapy since the newly found ability to define physiological and pathological cell functions at a molecular level. The centerpiece of molecular genetics is the possibility to map and determine the fine structure of human genes and to define in molecular terms how each gene controls all the enzymes of energy metabolism, structural proteins of cells, the membrane proteins, includ

The frequencies of blood groups, Rh and HLA antigens were studied in a series of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis as well as in control subjects. Statistical analysis of the results showed that only 2 antigens (HLA-A9 and HLA-B13) had a significantly increased frequency among patients with paracoccidioidomycosis compared with healthy controls. Among patients with paracoccidioidomycosis antigen HLA-A9 was significantly more prevalent in progressive pulmonary forms of the disease than in patients with extra pulmonary involvement. These observations suggest that HLA-A9 may influence susceptib

BACKGROUND: Balanced plasma/red blood cell transfusions have shown survival benefit in emergency scenarios. To improve plasma availability, we implemented 5-day group A thawed plasma at our pediatric hospital in February 2021.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We maintain thawed group A plasma units (5-day shelf-life) ready for immediate issue in the blood bank (since February 2021) and trauma code room (since August 2022). Group A plasma (un-titered) is issued for patients with unknown blood type during emergencies. We retrospectively reviewed records and laboratory results of recipients to assess s

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a process in which plasma containing antibodies, immune complexes, inflammatory moderators, paraproteins and other toxins which are believed to be the cause of disease is removed from a patient. TPE is the first-line treatment (category I, level 1A) in all forms of Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy disease (axonal, demyelinating and miller-fisher variant) as well as in acute myasthenic crisis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and Paraproteinemic neuropathies (category I, level 1B). Moreover, TPE in kidney disea

Three patients with congenital factor I deficiency associated with different clinical manifestations are described. Case 1 had one single episode of meningococcal disease, case 2 experienced four episodes of meningococcal disease and several other severe infections, whereas case 3, without known predisposition for infections, died from a subacute immune-complex mediated syndrome, resembling polyarteritis nodosa. Family studies in cases 1 and 2 revealed healthy individuals with factor I concentrations below the lower reference limit, indicating heterozygous carriers. The pedigree analyses were

BACKGROUND: Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) is frequently used in immunologically high-risk kidney transplantation (KT), but its comparative effectiveness and safety vs basiliximab in ABO-incompatible (ABOi) KT are not well established. We aimed to compare outcomes of rATG and basiliximab induction in ABOi KT and to evaluate whether ABO compatibility modifies these associations.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study of adult KT recipients at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital between 2011 and 2020. Patients receiving rATG or basiliximab induction were identified and str

ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABO-i KT) facilitates transplantation across blood types; however, antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) remains a major concern, particularly in blood type O recipients. This retrospective study evaluated the effect of immunoglobulin G (IgG) monitoring and machine learning (ML)-based IgG prediction on post-transplant outcomes in 408 ABO-i KT recipients treated between 2014 and 2020. In blood type O recipients, the introduction of IgG monitoring (Era 2) was associated with a significantly lower incidence of ABMR (P = 0.041) and acute rejection (P = 0.037)
