Molecular studies have provided convincing evidence that a unique deltaproteobacterium is the causative agent of epizootic bovine abortion (EBA). Bovine fetuses, infected following dam exposure, are the only identified susceptible mammalian host. The inability to cultivate the bacterial agent of EBA (aoEBA) in vitro, associated with the substantial cost of bovine experimentation, drove efforts to identify an alternative laboratory animal host. Mice with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) were chosen as a potential host after immunocompetent mice proved resistant to infection. SCID mice in

We used a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal design to estimate seroprevalence of Brucella antibodies in Awassi sheep and the incidence of abortion due to brucellosis during one lambing season, and to test risk factors. The Brucella organisms isolated from aborted fetuses and vaginal swabs were characterized as Brucella melitensis biotype 3. Seventy Awassi sheep flocks were selected randomly from Northern Jordan. Sixty two of the 70 flocks were used in the cross-sectional study and 8 flocks were monitored for three consecutive months to estimate the incidence of abortion. Questionnaire

It has been previously demonstrated that a Brucella melitensis high-temperature-requirement A (htrA) deletion mutant is more susceptible to oxidative killing in vitro than the parental strain and is attenuated in mice. To evaluate the contribution of the B melitensis HtrA protease to virulence in ruminants, the capacity of the B melitensis htrA mutant RWP5 to produce abortion in goats was compared to that of the virulent parental strain 16M. Experimental infection with strain 16M caused abortion in eight of 12 pregnant nannies, while none of the 12 nannies inoculated with RWP5 aborted. Further

In the dog, knowledge about involvement of the immune system in controlling luteal function is restricted to observations showing a time-dependent invasion of immune cells into the corpus luteum (CL) of non-pregnant bitches. Therefore, this study investigated the presence of CD4-, CD8-, MHCII- and endoglin-expressing cells in CL collected throughout pregnancy from pre-implantation until prepartum luteolysis. Immunohistochemistry and semi-quantitative RT-PCR were applied. The time-dependent expression of CD4, CD8 and endoglin was more strongly related to formation of the CL, whereas MHCII was i

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that the anticonvulsant drug phenytoin (PHT) requires bioactivation to reactive intermediate(s) to achieve its recognized teratogenic potential and that embryonal detoxification power may play a fundamental role in the teratogenic response. On this basis, we sought to investigate the potential effects of a teratogenic exposure to PHT on the activities of antioxidant and GSH-related detoxifying enzymes in gestational murine tissues.
METHODS: Pregnant Swiss mice were injected intraperitoneally with 0 (vehicle) or 65 mg/kg of PHT on gestation day (GD) 12 (plug da

Ten West African Dwarf (WAD) does and 12 Djallonké ewes were artificially infected with a West African strain of Trypanosoma congolense and observed over two years. The infected animals showed a chronic anaemia together with a persistent parasitaemia but very low mortality and increase in body weights was not significantly different from the control. In the infected sheep significant differences were found in offspring production at three and five months due to a higher mortality among the lambs. The infected goats had more abortions and stillbirths and period to first kidding, total number of

The protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus causes infertility and spontaneous abortion in cattle. In Saskatchewan, Canada, the culture prevalence of trichomonads was 65 of 1,048 (6%) among 1,048 bulls tested within a 1-year period ending in April 1994. Saskatchewan was previously thought to be free of the parasite. To confirm the culture results, possible T. foetus DNA presence was determined by the PCR. All of the 16 culture-positive isolates tested were PCR positive by a single-band test, but one PCR product was weak. DNA fingerprinting by both T17 PCR and randomly amplified polymorphic DN

The serostatus of five abortigenic agents and the association between abortion history and Coxiella burnetii seropositivity were assessed in 350 dairy cattle from Al Ain, UAE. The bovine sera were ELISA-screened for C. burnetii, Leptospira Hardjo, Neospora caninum, and Brucella abortus antibodies, plus bovine pestivirus (BVDV) antigen. The serology data were collated and the level of significance between the proportions of C. burnetii-seropositive cattle with and without abortion history assessed by the Z test of two proportions. Of the 350 cattle, 41.4%, 1.7%, 1.4%, 0.3%, and 0.0% were seropo

Q fever is a worldwide zoonotic infectious disease caused by Coxiella burnetii and sheep and goats are known to be the main reservoir for human infection. This study describes the epidemiological and laboratory findings of C. burnetii outbreaks affecting sheep and goat flocks and also provides the results of a prospective serosurvey in bulk tank milk samples to assess C. burnetii circulation in a population of sheep living in close contact to the human population in Central Portugal. In the epizooties, C. burnetii was identified in tissues of the resulting abortions by qPCR. As for the serolog

Coxiella burnetii and certain members of the Chlamydiales order are zoonotic, intracellular, Gram-negative bacteria, with abortigenic potential in ruminants. These pathogens have a broad host range and worldwide geographical distribution. The current study aimed to reveal the importance of C. burnetii and Chlamydiales spp. in abortions in domestic ruminants and their occurrence in wild ruminants with real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, histology, and immunohistochemical staining (IHC). From the 111 abortion cases of domestic ruminants examined, C. burnetii was detected in 33 pla

Q fever is a zoonosis produced by Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium that is widely distributed worldwide. Domestic ruminants are the most important source of C. burnetii for human infection. In sheep and goats, abortion is the main clinical consequence of infection, yet the symptoms described in cattle have so far been inconsistent. Q fever has been also scarcely reported in cattle, most likely because of its difficult diagnosis at the farm level and because of the many existing responsible C. burnetii strains. In this report, the effects of C. burnetii infection or Q fever disease on the reprodu

Since mid-December 2011, samples from malformed lambs and calves are sent to CODA-CERVA in Belgium for diagnosis of Schmallenberg virus (SBV), a novel Orthobunyavirus that was first detected by researchers of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI, Germany) in German cattle in autumn 2011 and was later shown to be involved in congenital malformations in lambs, goat kids and calves. Surprisingly, by making use of real time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR) assays developed by the FLI, presence of SBV RNA could only be confirmed in part of the SBV suspected newborns examined. To investigate possible causes for non

A cross-sectional study was performed in Southern and Lusaka provinces of Zambia between March and September 2008 to estimate Brucella seroprevalence in cattle kept by smallholder dairy farmers (n = 185). Rose Bengal test (RBT) was used as a screening test followed by confirmation with competitive ELISA (c-ELISA). We investigated 1,323 cattle, of which 383 had a history of receiving vaccination against brucellosis and 36 had a history of abortion. Overall seroprevalence was 6.0% with areas where vaccination was practiced having low seroprevalence. Age was associated with Brucella seropositivit

Bovine trichomonosis (BT) is a contagious disease, characterized by reproductive failure, embryonic losses, infertility, and abortions, which directly impacts the reproductive performance of cattle. In this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, 56 veterinarians provided information on the geographic location and on the demographic, husbandry, and sanitary characteristics of 173 beef herds located in 26 (21%) counties of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Herds rearing beef cattle (OR=2.5, 95% CI=1.0, 6.3), with low pregnancy rate in cows (<or=90%) (OR=4.1, 95% CI=1.5, 10.8), sharing

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging zoonotic mosquito-borne disease caused by Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV), affecting both humans and animals. It is endemic to Rwanda and Tanzania and Uganda which are adjacent countries, with possible transboundary transmissions. Despite the various outbreak reports in Rwanda since 2012, information on the intensity and spread of these outbreaks and their management is scarce. We describe the 2022 outbreak that happened in Rwanda and provide insights into the One Health response implemented during the outbreak. There were no human cases officially reporte
