[The effect of opiate receptor ligands on emotional cardiovascular reactions in lower primates].

Intravenous naloxone injection (0.1 mg/kg) facilitated blood pressure increase in response to conditioned sound stimulus followed by electrocutaneous shock in conscious chair-restrained baboons (Papio hamadryas). Naloxone at a dose of 1.0 mg/kg had an opposite effect and led to the decrease in blood pressure and heart rate in conditioned fear reflex. Naloxone microinjections (50 microM) into the periventricular hypothalamus led to a significant diminution of blood pressure and heart rate increment in response to electrocutaneous shock; naloxone microinjections into tractus solitarius nuclei su

Functions of different receptor systems in the reptilian labyrinth.

Different biopotentials, following a mechanical stimulus, were recorded from single hair cells of the reptilian labyrinth, with electronoptically circumscript localizations: 1. From the apical cell pole, the receptor potential, intracellular or from the ciliary surface, within the physiological range proportional to stimulus amplitude, frequency or phase, without delay, and with no real threshold of mechanosensitivity, as measured by ciliary displacement amplitude or velocity. 2. From the synaptic zone, in the basal region of the hair cell, or from contacting nerve endings, the synaptic potent

A model-based quantification of startle reflex habituation in larval zebrafish.

Zebrafish is an established animal model for the reproduction and study of neurobiological pathogenesis of human neurological conditions. The 'startle reflex' in zebrafish larvae is an evolutionarily preserved defence response, manifesting as a quick body-bend in reaction to sudden sensory stimuli. Changes in startle reflex habituation characterise several neuropsychiatric disorders and hence represent an informative index of neurophysiological health. This study aimed at establishing a simple and reliable experimental protocol for the quantification of startle reflex response and habituation.

Gradual adaptation to auditory frequency mismatch.

What is the best way to help humans adapt to a distorted sensory input? Interest in this question is more than academic. The answer may help facilitate auditory learning by people who became deaf after learning language and later received a cochlear implant (a neural prosthesis that restores hearing through direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve). There is evidence that some cochlear implants (which provide information that is spectrally degraded to begin with) stimulate neurons with higher characteristic frequency than the acoustic frequency of the original stimulus. In other wor

Does enriched acoustic environment in humans abolish chronic tinnitus clinically and electrophysiologically? A double blind placebo controlled study.

Animal research has shown that loss of normal acoustic stimulation can increase spontaneous firing in the central auditory system and induce cortical map plasticity. Enriched acoustic environment after noise trauma prevents map plasticity and abolishes neural signs of tinnitus. In humans, the tinnitus spectrum overlaps with the area of hearing loss. Based on these findings it can be hypothesized that stimulating the auditory system by presenting music compensating specifically for the hearing loss might also suppress chronic tinnitus. To verify this hypothesis, a study was conducted in three g…

Comparison of Thiel-fixed and fresh-frozen temporal bon biomechanics with dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray imaging.

BACKGROUND: The Thiel embalming method offers lifelike tissue preservation, yet its suitability for biomechanical studies remains debated. METHODS: Here, we investigated two human temporal bones, one Thiel-fixed and one fresh-frozen, using dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray imaging under acoustic stimulation. FINDINGS: Both specimens exhibited a linear response at the umbo, but the Thiel-fixed specimen displayed discontinuity after the incudo-malleolar joint, suggesting ossicular chain stiffening. Our findings align well with previous studies indicating potential tissue degradation induced by T…

Dynamic tympanometry.

Tympanometry was performed under the contraction of the middle ear muscles (dynamic tympanometry). A tympanogram of lesser compliance was observed under a stapedius reflex which was produced by contralateral acoustic stimulation. In patients with reversed (downward) stapedius reflex, the dynamic tympanogram showed either a higher peak amplitude or a shift of conventional tympanogram to the negative pressure side. Voluntary contraction of the tensor tympani produced a lesser compliance with positive pressure, whereas there was an apparent increase of compliance with negative pressure in the ext…

Effects of High Sound Exposure During Air-Conducted Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Testing in Children and Young Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing is increasingly utilized in pediatric vestibular evaluations due to its diagnostic capability to identify otolith dysfunction and feasibility of testing. However, there is evidence demonstrating that the high-intensity stimulation level required to elicit a reliable VEMP response causes acoustic trauma in adults. Despite utility of VEMP testing in children, similar findings are unknown. It is hypothesized that increased sound exposure may exist in children because differences in ear-canal volume (ECV) compared with adults, and the

The psychophysics of roughness applied to dysphonic voice.

Roughness is a sound quality that has been related to the amplitude modulation characteristics of the acoustic stimulus. Roughness also is considered one of the primary elements of voice quality associated with natural variations across normal voices and is a salient feature of many dysphonic voices. It is known that the roughness of tonal stimuli is dependent on the frequency and depth of amplitude modulation and on the carrier frequency. Here, it is determined if similar dependencies exist for voiced speech stimuli. Knowledge of such dependencies can lead to a better understanding of the aco

Distortion product emissions in humans. I. Basic properties in normally hearing subjects.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPEs) at the 2f1-f2 frequency were recorded from 44 normal ears in response to equilevel primary tones. Detailed testing included the recording of DPE "audiograms" in 100-Hz steps from 1 to 8 kHz at three primary-tone levels (65, 75, and 85 dB sound pressure level [SPL]). In addition, response-growth or input-output (I/O) functions depicting the relationship of the amplitudes of DPEs to primary-tone levels, ranging from 25 to 85 dB SPL in 5-dB steps, were also tested for 11 frequencies distributed at quarter-octave intervals over the identical frequenc

Intraoperative continuous monitoring of facial motor evoked potentials in acoustic neuroma surgery.

The preservation of facial nerve function is one of the primary objectives in acoustic neuroma surgery. We detail our method of continuous intraoperative facial motor evoked potential (MEP) monitoring and present criteria for the preservation of facial nerve function to avoid postoperative facial nerve palsy. Our study population was comprised of 15 patients who did not (group 1), and 20 who did (group 2) undergo facial MEP monitoring during surgery to remove acoustic neuromas. In group 2, we continuously stimulated the facial motor cortex at 5- or 10-s intervals throughout surgery. Electromyo

Effects of a simultaneous lip tube and auditory feedback perturbation on the production of the French vowel /u/.

This study investigates the relative weight of somatosensory and auditory feedback in the production of the French vowel /u/ in a simultaneous lip tube and formant shift perturbation. To do so, 20 native Quebec French speakers were recruited. Three experimental conditions involving a lip tube, with each displaying a different auditory condition, were devised. In the first condition, auditory feedback was corrected by canceling the auditory effects of the lip tube using a formant shift. In the second condition, the corrected auditory feedback was replaced with white noise. Finally, access to na

Effect of speaker variability on tone perception for L2 learners: Perspectives of machine learning.

Mandarin tones 2 and 3 share similar acoustic characteristics, posing a challenge for L2 learners to distinguish. This difficulty is further compounded by both inter- and intra-speaker variability. This study employed machine learning methods to examine the effectiveness of eight acoustic cues for tone 2 and tone 3 classification in speech that were produced by 20 speakers under normal and loud speaking modes (experiment 1). Additionally, we compared the perception between native listeners and medium-to-advanced Thai L2 learners of Mandarin, including perceptual accuracy, cue-weighting strateg

Rescuing Auditory Temporal Processing with a Novel Augmented Acoustic Environment in an Animal Model of Congenital Hearing Loss.

Congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) affects thousands of infants each year and results in significant delays in speech and language development. Previous studies have shown that early exposure to a simple augmented acoustic environment (AAE) can limit the effects of progressive SNHL on hearing sensitivity. However, SNHL is also accompanied by hearing loss that is not assessed on standard audiological examinations, such as reduced temporal processing acuity. To assess whether sound therapy may improve these deficits, a mouse model of congenital SNHL was exposed to simple or temporally

Voltage readout from a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer implanted in a living guinea pig.

The ability to measure the voltage readout from a sensor implanted inside the living cochlea enables continuous monitoring of intracochlear acoustic pressure locally, which could improve cochlear implants. We developed a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer (PIAT) designed to sense the acoustic pressure while fully implanted inside a living guinea pig cochlea. The PIAT, fabricated using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) techniques, consisted of an array of four piezoelectric cantilevers with varying lengths to enhance sensitivity across a wide frequency bandwidth. A common microstructure in behavioral hearing thresholds and stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions.

Behavioral hearing thresholds and otoacoustic emission (OAE) spectra often exhibit quasiperiodic fluctuations with frequency. For behavioral and OAE responses to single tones-the latter referred to as stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs)-this microstructure has been attributed to intracochlear reflections of SFOAE energy between its region of generation and the middle ear boundary. However, the relationship between behavioral and SFOAE microstructures, as well as their presumed dependence on the properties of the SFOAE-generation mechanism, have yet to be adequately examined. Gender Perception After Raising Vowel Fundamental and Formant Frequencies: Considerations for Oral Resonance Research.

OBJECTIVES: Voice feminization therapy for male-to-female transgender women typically targets increasing fundamental frequency (F0). Increasing vowel formant frequencies (FFs) has also been proposed. To better understand formant conditions that shift listeners' perception of gender from male to "not-male," individual and combined vowel FFs were incrementally raised, whereas F0 was held constant at a gender-ambiguous level. METHODS: The study used a prospective, experimental group design. Using a customized MATLAB program, vowels (/i/, /æ/, /ɑ/, and /u/) spoken by an adult were manipulated by

Degraded auditory processing in a rat model of autism limits the speech representation in non-primary auditory cortex.

Although individuals with autism are known to have significant communication problems, the cellular mechanisms responsible for impaired communication are poorly understood. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant that is a known risk factor for autism in prenatally exposed children. Prenatal VPA exposure in rats causes numerous neural and behavioral abnormalities that mimic autism. We predicted that VPA exposure may lead to auditory processing impairments which may contribute to the deficits in communication observed in individuals with autism. In this study, we document auditory cortex respo
