Phenotypic plasticity in response to low quality diet in the South American omnivorous rodent Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).

We studied the responses in the omnivorous rodent A. azarae submitted to a low quality diet at morphological, physiological and biochemical levels. At short term, a decrease in body mass occurred. A later increase in food consumption constituted a strategy that allowed a temporal recovery of physical condition. However, hyperphagia appeared not to be enough to maintain physical condition after 30 days of low quality diet consumption. At the morphological level, an increase in length (9%) of the anterior portion of the gut occurred, the part of the gut where digestion and absorption take place.

Modality-specific sensory changes in humans after the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) in cutaneous nociceptive pathways.

The impact of long-term potentiation (LTP) in nociceptive pathways on somatosensory perception was examined by means of quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the ventral forearm of 12 healthy human subjects. Electrical high-frequency stimulation of the forearm skin (HFS; 5 x 1 s at 100 Hz and 10 x detection threshold) led to an abrupt increase of pain to single electrical test stimuli, which were applied through the same electrode (perceptual LTP +72%, p<0.01). Perceptual LTP outlasted the 1-h observation period. The effects of HFS on somatosensory perception of natural test stimuli in the con

Reversible and controlled peripheral vestibular loss by continuous infusion of ropivacaine (Narop) into the round window niche of rats.

This paper describes a method for achieving a peripheral vestibular blockade in rats by instillation of local anaesthetics over the round window membrane through a permanently implanted cannula. Being rapidly reversible, the effect of the anaesthetic drug is easily controlled by a single continuous infusion, which can be repeated at any time. The method offers a unique opportunity to study the consequence of single or repeated transient vestibular loss without any use of general anaesthetics, which may be a severe confounding factor. Such studies might shed light on balance disorders related t

[Effects of adaptive changes of vestibular system on cardiovascular regulation and orthostatic tolerance].

Astronauts may experience Space Adaptation Syndrome at the primary period in spaceflight. It is widely accepted that it is mainly caused by vestibular adaptive changes. The reverse changes of adaptation present after the return from weightlessness to normal 1 G. It may cause astronauts' postural instability and orthostatic intolerance. Evidences from animal model and some data from humans suggest that the vestibular system have influences on the sympathetic nervous system and cardiovascular control. The inputs that appear to be critical in producing these responses come from otolith receptors.

Vestibular habituation in student pilots.

The dynamics of vestibular nystagmus were measured in 42 military student pilots (age 19 to 21). Their responses were compared with 40 non-flying subjects of similar age who were also fulfilling requirements for the mandatory Swiss military service. The following differences emerged: the time constant of the nystagmus response after vestibular stimulation was shorter (p less than 0.001; t-test) in student pilots, whereas the gain tended to be higher (p less than 0.025). These changes in the response dynamics are attributed to habituation. Student pilots were additionally tested with conflictin

Adaptation of plasma catecholamine and corticosterone responses to short-term repeated noise stress in rats.

Plasma noradrenaline (NA), adrenaline (A) and corticosterone (CS) concentrations were determined in blood frequently sampled via a cardiac catheter from freely moving rats exposed to three successive trials of white-noise stimulation (10 min, 100 dBA) with an intertrial interval of 30 min. During the sampling period, behavioral activities of the rats were recorded. It was demonstrated that the first exposure to noise induced a specific temporal pattern of neuroendocrine changes: Plasma A and NA contents increased rapidly and peaked early after stimulus onset but their peak-latencies were diffe

Multiorgan ultrastructural changes in rats induced in synthetic torpor.

Torpor is a state used by several mammals to survive harsh winters and avoid predation, characterized by a drastic reduction in metabolic rate followed by a decrease in body temperature, heart rate, and many physiological variables. During torpor, all organs and systems must adapt to the new low-energy expenditure conditions to preserve physiological homeostasis. These adaptations may be exploited in a translational perspective in several fields. Recently, many features of torpor were shown to be mimicked in non-hibernators by the inhibition of neurons within the brainstem region of the Raphe

Mechanisms of nematicide evasion in plant-parasitic nematodes: From molecular adaptation to evolution-aware management.

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial global crop losses, yet the effectiveness of chemical nematicides is declining due to adaptive responses in nematode populations. Current understanding of nematicide resistance remains incomplete, often limited to target-site mutations and metabolic detoxification. This review addresses this gap by providing an integrated perspective on how PPNs evade nematicides across molecular, physiological, and ecological scales. We synthesize established resistance mechanisms alongside underexplored strategies, including cuticle remodeling, behavioral av

Repeated genetic adaptation under demographic limits in kiwifruit.

Population genetic theory predicts that species with narrow geographic distributions experience stronger genetic drift, higher inbreeding, and greater mutational burden than their widespread relatives, yet how demographic history shapes the genomic basis of adaptation remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that (i) restricted-range species exhibit reduced genetic diversity, elevated inbreeding, and greater mutation load owing to smaller long-term effective population sizes; (ii) despite these demographic constraints, shared environmental pressures can still drive repeated adaptation; (iii)

Exercise-Induced Extracellular Vesicles as Mediators of Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Insulin Sensitivity in Metabolic Adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and obesity share insulin resistance as a common feature, driven partly by mitochondrial dysfunction. Exercise-induced extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as mediators of inter-organ communication in metabolic regulation. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on exercise-induced EVs in mitochondrial adaptation and insulin sensitivity, and propose an integrative framework linking EV-mediated communication to systemic metabolic benefits: METHODS: Narrative synthesis of mechanistic, animal, EV transfer/inhibition, translational, and human stu

Adaptation of Enterococcus faecalis to intestinal mucus revealed by a human colonic organoid model.

UNLABELLED: The human gastrointestinal tract hosts a diverse population of microorganisms that have a significant impact on host health. Among this population, Enterococcus faecalis (Ef) represents a common member of intestinal microbiota, colonizing humans early in life but also capable of opportunistically infecting its host. Despite its importance in human health, investigations of its physiological adaptation to the mucosal environment remain limited. Building on recent advances in tissue engineering, we here leverage human colonic organoids (colonoids) to investigate the Ef's mechanisms o

Decoding the cold: integrated secretome profiling reveals extracellular adaptation mechanisms in Glaciozyma antarctica.

Glaciozyma antarctica is an Antarctic psychrophilic yeast providing an excellent eukaryotic model for dissecting molecular mechanisms of cold adaptation. Yet, its extracellular protein repertoire, the interface between the cell and extreme surroundings, remains unexplored. Here, we present the first integrated bioinformatics-proteomics secretome map of G. antarctica, linking computational prediction with experimental validation under varying temperature stress, yielding 9 high-confidence experimentally supported secreted proteins. Three complementary pipelines (Phobius, SignalP/TMHMM, and WoLF

On the importance of studying ultra-marathon.

Here, we argue that the importance of studying ultra-marathon performance is threefold. First, since ultra-marathon pushes the boundaries of human endurance performance (exposing participants to significant physiological stresses), it is a valuable model to investigate the adaptive responses to both extreme loads and stresses on the human body. Second, it would help to identify potential and detrimental physiological variations related to these events, pinpointing potential adverse reactions to multiple regulatory and physiological systems. Finally, it would help to inform aspects of training

Impact of Salinity Duration on Growth, Photosynthesis, Water Relations, and Recovery Capacity Reveals Adaptive Responses in Hordeum maritimum.

Although the physiological mechanisms underlying salt tolerance in wild barley (Hordeum maritimum) are relatively well understood, its recovery after salt stress remains poorly characterized. In this pot experiment, plants were exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 0, 15, 30, 45, or 60 days to evaluate changes in growth and water status. Wild barley exhibited high tolerance during the early stages of salt exposure, maintaining normal growth and water balance for up to 30 days. However, longer exposure reduced plant growth and leaf water content, indicating that prolonged salinity eventually compromises p

The genomic architecture of local adaptation in two connected populations of three-spined stickleback.

Populations often adapt to their local environments despite the homogenizing effects of gene flow, but the genomic mechanisms enabling this process remain unclear. Theory predicts that adaptive divergence under high connectivity is favored when beneficial alleles cluster in regions of reduced recombination, a pattern that can be reinforced by structural variants (SVs). We investigated this in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from the St. Lawrence Estuary, where distinct freshwater and marine ecotypes meet and interbreed along a short ecological gradient. Using long- and short

Sensory adaptation and pupil-linked arousal support flexible evidence accumulation during perceptual decision making.

Effective decision making in dynamic environments requires flexible evidence accumulation. Although models often express this flexibility as a property of the accumulator, its implementation in the brain may involve adaptive mechanisms operating at other stages of the decision process. We examined two such mechanisms: (1) stimulus-specific sensory adaptation at the level of evidence encoding, and (2) arousal-related neuromodulation, which could, in principle, affect both evidence encoding and accumulation. We measured single-unit activity in the middle temporal (MT) area and pupil-linked arous

Flight performance of great cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis suggests sufficient muscle capacity for adaptive speed adjustment.

Power required to fly for a bird generally follows a U-shaped function of airspeed, with higher cost at both low and high speeds. Because power required increases with body mass faster than power available from flight muscles, larger birds may experience restricted flight speed ranges and climbing capabilities. Previous studies found limited flight performance in cormorants. Adapted for both flight and sub-surface swimming, they trade off larger flight muscles for powerful leg muscles used for diving. Our study tested whether the flight performance of greater cormorants is constrained by measu
