Spinal cord transection inhibits HR reduction in anesthetized rats immersed in an artificial CO2-hot spring bath.

Like humans, the heart rate (HR) of anesthetized rats immersed in CO(2)-water is lower than that when immersed in tap water at the same temperature. To investigate the afferent signal pathway in the mechanism of HR reduction, Wistar rats were anesthetized with urethane and then the spinal cord was transected between T(4) and T(5). The animals were immersed up to the axilla in a bathtub of tap-water (CO(2) contents: 10-20 mg.l(-1)) or of CO(2)-water (965-1,400 mg.l(-1)) at 35 degrees C while recording HR, arterial blood pressure, and arterial blood gas parameters (PaCO(2), PaO(2), pH). Arterial

Flexor reflex responses triggered by imposed knee extension in chronic human spinal cord injury.

Hypersensitivity of the flexor reflex pathways to input from force-sensitive muscle afferents may contribute to the prevalence and severity … traction that then can contribute to a flexor reflex response, possibly through muscle group III/IV afferent pathways. These results suggest that spasticity in SCI consists of a myriad of complex reflex responses that extend beyond stretch reflexes.

Chemoafferent degeneration and carotid body hypoplasia following chronic hyperoxia in newborn rats.

1. To define the role of environmental oxygen in regulating postnatal maturation of the carotid body afferent pathway, light and electron microscopic methods were used to compare chemoafferent neurone survival and carotid body development in newborn rats reared from birth in normoxia (21 % O2) or chronic hyperoxia (60 % O2). 2. Four weeks of chronic hyperoxia resulted in a significant 41 % decrease in the number of unmyelinated axons in the carotid sinus nerve, compared with age-matched normoxic controls. In contrast, the number of myelinated axons was unaffected by hyperoxic exposure. 3. Chem

Some afferent and efferent connections of the vestibular nuclear complex in the red-eared turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans.

In the present study some afferent, commissural, and efferent connections of the vestibular nuclear complex in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans were demonstrated with the HRP tracing technique. Afferent projections to the vestibular nuclei were found to arise in the nucleus of the basal optic root, the interstitial nucleus of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis, the medial and lateral cerebellar nuclei, the perihypoglossal nuclear complex, and the reticular formation. Distinct commissural projections appeared to arise in the dorsolateral, ventromedial, and descending vestibular nuclei.

Effects of Vagal Nerve Stimulation on Rectal Tone and Distal Colon Transit in Rats Mediated via the Vagal-Sacral Pathway.

The vagus nerve (innervating the gut from esophagus to proximal colon) and sacral nerve (innervating distal colon and rectum) are key parasympathetic regulators of gastrointestinal (GI) function. While vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown therapeutic potential in upper GI disorders, its role in modulating distal colon and rectal function remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of VNS on distal colon transit and rectal tone in rats. Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were implanted with stimulation electrodes at the cervical or auricular vagal afferent nerve

Thoracic Spinal Cord Neuroinflammation as a Novel Therapeutic Target in Pulmonary Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with aberrant sympathoexcitation leading to right ventricular failure (RVF), arrhythmias, and death. Microglial activation and neuroinflammation have been implicated in sympathoexcitation in experimental PH. We recently reported the first evidence of thoracic spinal cord (TSC) neuroinflammation in PH rats. Here, we hypothesize that PH is associated with increased cardiopulmonary afferent signaling leading to TSC-specific neuroinflammation and sympathoexcitation. Furthermore, inhibition of TSC neuroinflammation rescues experimental PH and RV

Presynaptic GABAB receptors functionally uncouple somatostatin interneurons from the active hippocampal network.

Information processing in cortical neuronal networks relies on properly balanced excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. A ubiquitous motif for maintaining this balance is the somatostatin interneuron (SOM-IN) feedback microcircuit. Here, we investigated the modulation of this microcircuit by presynaptic GABAB receptors (GABABRs) in the rodent hippocampus. Whole-cell recordings from SOM-INs revealed that both excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs are strongly inhibited by GABABRs, while optogenetic activation of the interneurons shows that their inhibitory output is also strongly supp

Thyroxin and calcitonin secretion into thyroid venous blood is regulated by pharyngeal mechanical stimulation in anesthetized rats.

The effects of the pharyngeal non-noxious mechanical stimulation on the secretion of immunoreactive thyroxin (iT4), immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT), and immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH) into thyroid venous blood were examined in anesthetized rats. Secretion rates of iT4, iCT, and iPTH were calculated from their concentration in thyroid venous plasma and the plasma flow rate. A mechanical stimulation was delivered to the pharynx by a rubber balloon placed on the tongue that was intermittently pushed into the pharyngeal cavity. Pharyngeal stimulation increased iT4 and iCT secretion, but

A Neural Circuit for Gut-Induced Reward.

The gut is now recognized as a major regulator of motivational and emotional states. However, the relevant gut-brain neuronal circuitry remains unknown. We show that optical activation of gut-innervating vagal sensory neurons recapitulates the hallmark effects of stimulating brain reward neurons. Specifically, right, but not left, vagal sensory ganglion activation sustained self-stimulation behavior, conditioned both flavor and place preferences, and induced dopamine release from Substantia nigra. Cell-specific transneuronal tracing revealed asymmetric ascending pathways of vagal origin throug

Repeat periods of electrical stimulation prolong the modulation of the micturition reflex in the rat.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine if the duration of the micturition reflex modulation could be prolonged by repeated periods of afferent stimulation in the decorticated rat. METHODS: Eighteen female Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the study, 10 for intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES), and 8 for Ano-genital pudendal afferents stimulation. Repeated constant flow cystometries were performed with body-warm saline (0.06-0.1 mL/min) at about 10 min interval. The selected afferents were stimulated continuously for 5 min at maximal intensity. The same stimulation was repeated six

CONCLUSIONS: Our results are consistent with tDCS producing directionally specific neuromodulation in brain regions in-between electrodes, but shows nuanced changes in excitability that are presumably current direction relative to column and …

Plasticity of vagal afferent signaling in the gut.

Vagal sensory neurons mediate the vago-vagal reflex which, in turn, regulates a wide array of gastrointestinal functions including esophageal motility, gastric accommodation and pancreatic enzyme secretion. These neurons also transmit sensory information from the gut to the central nervous system, which then mediates the sensations of nausea, fullness and satiety. Recent research indicates that vagal afferent neurons process non-uniform properties and a significant degree of plasticity. These properties are important to ensure that vagally regulated gastrointestinal functions respond rapidly a

Cognitive effects of subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation in rats.

Vagal afferents are a crucial neuronal component of the gut-brain axis and mediate the information flow from the viscera to the central nervous system. Based on the findings provided by experiments involving vagus nerve stimulation, it has been suggested that vagal afferent signaling may influence various cognitive functions such as recognition memory and cognitive flexibility. Here, we examined this hypothesis using a rat model of subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation (SDA), the most complete and selective abdominal vagal deafferentation method existing to date. We found that SDA did not aff

Neurophysiological analytics for all! Free open-source software tools for documenting, analyzing, visualizing, and sharing using electronic notebooks.

Neurophysiology requires an extensive workflow of information analysis routines, which often includes incompatible proprietary software, introducing limitations based on financial costs, transfer of data between platforms, and the ability to share. An ecosystem of free open-source software exists to fill these gaps, including thousands of analysis and plotting packages written in Python and R, which can be implemented in a sharable and reproducible format, such as the Jupyter electronic notebook. This tool chain can largely replace current routines by importing data, producing analyses, and ge

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

A brainstem lesion of any type that involves the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) can cause internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). This primarily affects conjugate horizontal gaze and classically manifests as impaired adduction ipsilateral to the lesion and abduction nystagmus contralateral to the lesion. Here, we describe the anatomy of the MLF and review the clinical features of INO. We also describe conjugate horizontal gaze palsy and some of the 'INO-plus' syndromes.

High frequency stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus increases c-fos immunoreactivity in the dorsal raphe nucleus and afferent brain regions.

High frequency stimulation (HFS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is the neurosurgical therapy of choice for the management of motor deficits in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease, but this treatment can elicit disabling mood changes. Our recent experiments show that in rats, HFS of the STN both inhibits the firing of 5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine; serotonin) neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) and elicits 5-HT-dependent behavioral effects. The neural circuitry underpinning these effects is unknown. Here we investigated in the dopamine-denervated rat the effect of bilateral HFS of th

Acupuncture regulates gut motility and secretion via nerve reflexes.

Digestive disorders impose a heavy medical and economical burden on society and they represent one of the most common reasons for seeking medical consultation. Acupuncture is one of the procedures available to treat these conditions; however, partly because of the limited scientific evidence as yet obtained, the method has not been widely accepted by the medical community as an evidence-based effective treatment. This article presents some recent experimental work on the effectiveness of acupuncture in changing motility in the stomach and duodenum in anesthetized rats. We have shown that elect

Assessment of the potential role of muscle spindle mechanoreceptor afferents in chronic muscle pain in the rat masseter muscle.

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of large diameter sensory afferent neurons changes in several models of neuropathic pain. We asked if similar changes also occur in "functional" pain syndromes. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Acidic saline (AS, pH 4.0) injections into the masseter muscle were used to induce persistent myalgia. Controls received saline at pH 7.2. Nocifensive responses of Experimental rats to applications of Von Frey Filaments to the masseters were above control levels 1-38 days post-injection. This effect was bilateral. CPAP inhibits non-nutritive swallowing through stimulation of bronchopulmonary receptors.

While swallowing and respiratory problems are among the most frequent disorders encountered in neonates, the interrelationships between both functions are not completely understood. This is especially true for non-nutritive swallowing (NNS), which fulfills the important function of clearing upper airways from both local secretions and liquids refluxed from the stomach. Recently, we showed that nasal CPAP inhibits NNS during quiet sleep in the newborn lamb (Samson, St-Hilaire, Nsegbe, Reix, Moreau-Bussière and Praud 2005). The present study was aimed at testing the hypothesis that NNS inhibitio
