Long-Evans male rats were given 7 weeks of choice between 10% ethanol and water and then were divided into 6 matched groups, 3 of which were then deprived of alcohol for 6 days. Subcutaneous cyanamide injections (10 mg/kg, 3 times daily, for 4 days) during alcohol deprivation produced a long lasting, significant increase in subsequent alcohol selection, over and above the increase produced by alcohol deprivation alone. The same injections given to a group not deprived of alcohol caused a significant suppression of alcohol drinking during the treatment and had disappeared 4 days after the last

A newly recognized clinical and morphologic pattern of acute alcoholic liver disease is described. Twenty-one patients, having the hepatic morphologic features of alcoholic foamy degeneration, were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had a significant history of chronic alcoholism. Jaundice and hepatomegaly were usually present. Hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, bleeding esophageal varices, or functional renal failure occurred in less than 10%. Usually this was the first episode of decompensation. Laboratory studies revealed a pattern of very transiently marked elevation of serum aminotransf…

Alcohol and alcohol withdrawal may affect nutritional status in many different ways, including effects on thyroid activity. The influence of alcohol withdrawal on thyroid hormone economy was investigated by measurements of changes in the serum concentrations of thyroxine (T4), 3, 5, 3'-triiodothyronine (T3), 3, 5, 5'-triiodothyronine (reverse T3, rT3), and thyrotropin (TSH) in chronic alcoholics experiencing different degrees of alcohol abstinence. In addition, the serum concentrations of ethanol were measured at entrance. There was no significant correlation between the entrance serum ethanol

The effects of environmental 2-propanol on the in vivo properties of Drosophila alcohol dehydrogenase (E.C. 1..1.1.1.) are presented. Exposed flies were found to exhibit a significant decrease in ADH specific activity with a concomitant increase in the enzyme's relative in vivo stability and concentration. The possible adaptive significance of the observed responses is discussed.

The ratio of blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) to breath-alcohol concentration (BrAC), which is commonly referred to as the blood/breath ratio (BBR), is an important concept in forensic science and legal medicine. For example, the BBR serves as the calibration factor used when a breath-alcohol test result is converted into the coexisting BAC for clinical, research, and forensic purposes. Furthermore, when legislative bodies established statutory BrAC limits for driving, they divided the statutory BAC limit by an assumed population average BBR, hence BrAC = BAC/BBR. However, jurisdictions opted

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol

Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to serious birth defects and developmental disabilities. A need exists to develop effective strategies for both children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or other prenatal alcohol-related effects and for women at high risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Since the syndrome was identified approximately 30 years ago, advancements have been made in FAS diagnostics, surveillance, prevention, and intervention, but a substantial amount of work remains. Collaborations among partners in federal state, and local agencies, academia, clinical professions, scho

Alcohol consumption remains a major global public health and social challenge, driven by complex interactions between biochemical processes and sociocultural dynamics. This study critically examines the chemical pathways of ethanol metabolism and their relationship with the social behavior patterns observed among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Drawing on an interdisciplinary narrative review of peer-reviewed literature in biochemistry, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and public health, the paper synthesizes evidence on how alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and c

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is related to mental and somatic disorders that result in alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), with 30% of AWS cases leading to life-threatening delirium tremens (DTs). Currently, studies do not support using any one biomarker in DTs. Neurotrophins affect neuromodulation, playing a role in the pathogenesis of AUD, AWS, and DTs.
METHODS: This review aims to summarize experimental and clinical data related to neurotrophins and S100B in neuroplasticity, as well as neurodegeneration in the context of AUD, AWS, and DTs. This work used publications that were sel

Alcohol-induced pancreatitis typically presents as acute nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, typically seen as a complication of chronic alcoholism or binge drinking alcoholic beverages. Here, we present a case of alcohol-induced pancreatitis from an unusual source: alcohol used in a catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. This is the first case in current literature that has identified this adverse effect of alcohol catheter ablation.

AIMS: to investigate the relationship between phosphatidylethanol (PEth) and withdrawal severity in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD).
METHODS: in 34 patients with AUD admitted for treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal, data were available for initial blood PEth concentrations and scores throughout detoxification of symptoms of withdrawal assessed by trained medical staff using the alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS)-scale, a validated scale consisting of 11 items in the alcohol withdrawal syndrome (two subscales with seven physiological and five psychological symptoms).
RESULTS: a sign

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a clinical-pathologic entity caused by the chronic excessive consumption of alcohol. The disease includes a broad spectrum of anomalies at the cellular and tissual level that can cause acute-on-chronic (alcoholic hepatitis) or chronic (fibrosis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular cancer) injury, having a great impact on morbidity and mortality worldwide. Alcohol is metabolized mainly in the liver. During alcohol metabolism, toxic metabolites, such as acetaldehyde and oxygen reactive species, are produced. At the intestinal level, alcohol consumption can cause dysbiosis

Biocatalytic production of both enantiomers of optically active alcohols with high enantiopurities is of great interest in industry. Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) represent an important class of enzymes that could be used as catalysts to produce optically active alcohols from their corresponding prochiral ketones. This review covers examples of the synthesis of optically active alcohols using ADHs that exhibit anti-Prelog stereopreference. Both wild-type and engineered ADHs that exhibit anti-Prelog stereopreference are highlighted.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a common condition that is seen in treatment-seeking patients with Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD). AWS, which typically starts within 4-6 h of the last alcohol use, can range from mild symptoms such as insomnia, tremors, and autonomic hyperactivity to more severe symptoms such as seizures and delirium tremens. Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment Scale-Alcohol Revised (CIWA-Ar) is the most commonly used scale to assess AWS in clinical practice. The presence of moderate withdrawal as indicated by a score of more than 8 is an
