Alcohol-involved assault: associations with posttrauma alcohol use, consequences, and expectancies.

Victim alcohol consumption is common prior to sexual assault, and a burgeoning literature suggests that victims who were intoxicated during assault may differ in post-assault adjustment compared to those who were not impaired. Less is known about potential relationships between experiencing an alcohol-involved assault (AIA) and later drinking behavior. In this study, we examined the relationships between sexual assault, subsequent drinking behavior and consequences, and alcohol expectancies in a sample of 306 undergraduate women who reported current alcohol use and reported either no trauma hi

Correlates of alcohol abuse/dependence in early-onset alcohol-using women.

Early-onset alcohol use is associated with increased vulnerability to subsequent alcohol abuse and dependence. However, not all early-onset alcohol users develop alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Using a sample of young women from the United States, we identify correlates that contribute to a greater likelihood of AUDs in early-onset alcohol users. Using interview and questionnaire data on participants of the Missouri Adolescent Female Twin Study (MOAFTS), we examine whether measures from domains including sociodemographic, pubertal development, religiosity, educational achievement, adverse life e

Field trial of alcohol-server training for prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: An alcohol-server training program to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome was developed, implemented, and evaluated in a comparison study of public drinking establishments in New Mexico and Oregon. METHOD: The management and serving staffs of 148 establishments licensed for on-premise alcohol sales in the two states studied were trained to discourage alcohol consumption by pregnant customers. Pre- and post-tests of server responses to pregnant-appearing "pseudo-patron" actors ordering alcohol in experimental (n = 148) and comparison (n = 183) establishments were a key method of evaluati

Screening for alcohol misuse and alcohol-related behaviors among combat veterans.

OBJECTIVE: The U.S. military conducts health screenings of service members three to six months after they return from combat deployments. This population health program includes a modified version of the Two-Item Conjoint Screen (TICS), which is widely used in primary care to screen for alcohol misuse. Rates of referral in the military for alcohol treatment are very low, and the utility of these screening questions in predicting serious alcohol-related behaviors is unknown. METHODS: Anonymous surveys were collected from 6,527 U.S. Army soldiers who were screened three to four months after ret

[Diagnostic criteria for fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders].

Prenatal ethanol exposure, in our professional practice, is an almost neglected condition as an important etiological factor for the induction of a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric diseases that may appear during childhood, adolescence or adulthood. Children born to alcoholic mothers may show a profound mental retardation ranging to an apparent normality, and extending through epilepsy, attention deficit disorders with or without hyperactivity, autism and pervasive developmental disorders, and different types of learning disorders. When adolescents, they may develop different kinds of persona

High risk behaviours following alcohol use in alcohol dependent men.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol drinking and propensity to risk taking behaviour may both be associated with the occurrence of high risk behaviour. The present study was carried out to examine the association between high risk behaviours and alcohol abuse among patients admitted to an inpatient facility for treatment of alcohol dependence syndrome. METHODS: Using event analysis technique, the prevalence and type of high risk behaviour as a consequence of a heavy drinking episode was identified among heavy drinkers. Four types of high risk behaviour namely road traffic accidents, violenc

Low alcohol alternatives: a promising strategy for reducing alcohol related harm.

BACKGROUND: Less than 1% of the beer market in British Columbia comprises beers with an alcohol content below 4%, despite the success of low alcohol beers in other countries, e.g. Australia. A small experimental study is described in which male students were given either unmarked low alcohol beer (3.8%) or regular strength beer (5.3%) to investigate their enjoyment and subjective intoxication. METHODS: Thirty-four male students who reported drinking 5 or more beers in 1 day at least once in the last month volunteered for the study. In each drinking session, small groups of between 6 and 10 st

Effect of transdermal nicotine replacement on alcohol responses and alcohol self-administration.

RATIONALE: Nicotine replacement is commonly used to treat tobacco use in heavy-drinking smokers. However, few studies have examined the effect of nicotine replacement on subjective and physiological responses to alcohol and alcohol drinking behavior. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this within-subject, double-blind study was to examine whether transdermal nicotine replacement (0 mg vs 21 mg/day) altered response to a low-dose priming drink and subsequent ad libitum drinking behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects (n=19) were non-treatment-seeking, non-dependent heavy drinkers who were daily

Alcohol dehydrogenase 1B genotype and fetal alcohol syndrome: a HuGE minireview.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), 1 of the most common developmental disabilities in the United States, occurs at a rate of 0.5-2.0:1000 live births. Animal model, family, and twin studies suggest a genetic component to FAS susceptibility. Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) catalyze the rate-limiting step in alcohol metabolism. Studies of genetic associations with FAS have focused on the alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) gene, comparing mothers and children with the alleles ADH1B*2 or ADH1B*3, associated with faster ethanol metabolism, with those homozygous for ADH1B*1. While most studies have found a p

Effects of aripiprazole on alcohol intake in an animal model of high-alcohol drinking.

AIMS: This study examined the effects of aripiprazole, a novel atypical antipsychotic drug with partial agonist properties at dopamine D2 receptors, on the voluntary limited access alcohol drinking of alcohol-preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) rats. METHODS: AA rats were taught to drink 10% alcohol in a 4 h limited access paradigm. Effects of acute aripiprazole (0, 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/kg) on the limited access alcohol drinking were studied. In repeated treatment experiment, aripiprazole (0, 1.0, and 6.0 mg/kg) was administered once daily over five successive days. To reveal any effect by aripipra

Alcohol use and alcohol-related problems among lesbians and gay men.

While a substantial amount is known about some of the risk factors for alcohol-related problems among lesbians and gay men, major gaps in knowledge exist. Epidemiological studies focusing on alcohol use rarely ask about sexual orientation, and broad-based studies of sexual minority population groups have only occasionally assessed alcohol use. Although the AIDS crisis has stimulated substantial research on alcohol and other substance use among gay men, only a handful of studies have systematically explored lesbians' use of alcohol. Further, existing research on sexual orientation and alcohol u

The clinical course of alcohol dependence associated with a low level of response to alcohol.

AIMS: To evaluate the clinical course of specific alcohol-related life problems and the risk for dependence on illicit drugs in individuals with relatively low and high levels of response (LR) to alcohol earlier in life. SUBJECTS: From among 439 men who were part of the 15-year follow-up of sons of alcoholics and controls, 108 were identified as having fulfilled criteria for DSM-III-R alcohol dependence. MEASURES: The LR to alcohol was originally evaluated following the consumption of 0.61 g/kg of ethanol at age 20 by determining the levels of change in subjective feelings of intoxication, b

Alcohol and the liver: metabolism of alcohol and its role in hepatic and extrahepatic diseases.

UNLABELLED: Dr. Charles S. Lieber conducted clinical and experimental studies for more than four decades (three at Mount Sinai and the Bronx VA Medical Centers) with emphasis on liver, nutrition and GI pathophysiology. His major contributions include elucidation of the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease, by demonstrating the toxic role of alcohol and describing associated metabolic disorders. This was achieved through judicious clinical studies and newly-developed rodent and primate models with the administration of ethanol in liquid diets. The mechanisms of various pathological and metab

Effects of phentermine and fenfluramine on alcohol consumption and alcohol withdrawal seizures in rats.

The drug combination of phentermine plus fenfluramine has been used clinically in both the treatment of obesity and alcoholism. The aim of the current study was to assess the interaction of the two drugs on consumption of both an alcohol-containing and a nonalcoholic diet. Furthermore, the efficacy of the drug combination on suppression of withdrawal seizures was determined. Animals were either maintained on a 6% alcohol-containing diet, free-fed an isocaloric control, or pair-fed the control diet. It was observed that, with regard to body weight growth curves, alcohol provides about 2.5 kcal/

Animal models of alcoholism: neurobiology of high alcohol-drinking behavior in rodents.

This review discusses efforts to develop rodent models for the study of neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic alcohol drinking, alcoholism, and abnormal alcohol-seeking behavior. Selective breeding has produced stable lines of rats that reliably exhibit high and (for comparison purposes) low voluntary alcohol consumption. In addition, animal models of chronic ethanol self-administration have been developed in rodents, who do not have a genetic predisposition for high alcohol-seeking behavior, to explore environmental influences in ethanol drinking and the effects of physical dependence

Suicide and alcoholism. Distinguishing alcoholic patients with and without comorbid drug abuse.

Psychological autopsy data were used to test the hypothesis that alcoholic patients with comorbid drug use disorders who committed suicide (A + D; n = 26) are distinguishable from alcoholic suicide victims without a comorbid drug use disorder (A; n = 35). Dependent variables included demographics, suicidal behavior; psychiatric symptoms, and medical illness burden. The A group were older, white, and tended to be living alone. Analyses that controlled for age and sex indicated that As were more likely to have had a comorbid major depression and less likely to tell someone they were contemplatin
