BACKGROUND: Care in ICUs is often focused on critically ill patients, leaving the needs of their families overlooked. In Latin America, it is necessary to gain insight into these needs for future standardised protocols focused on family-centred care.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the needs of family members of patients hospitalised in intensive care units (ICUs) in five Latin American countries: Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru.
METHODS: Multicentre cross-sectional descriptive observational study. The short version of the CCFNI scale (Critical Care Family Needs Inventory) was applied

Datasets describing the composition of biological communities across broad anthropogenic gradients are valuable resources for ecologists and conservation biologists, with applications ranging from testing theories of community assembly to guiding biodiversity management. But much of the most rigorously collected field survey datasets, particularly for vascular plant communities in urban environments, remain underutilized because they are not curated or publicly accessible. We compiled and standardized a large database of information on the composition of vascular plant communities from sites s

Accurately assessing dietary intake in children and adolescents is essential for understanding dietary patterns and informing public health strategies. In Latin America, rapid nutrition transitions and increasing childhood obesity highlight the need for culturally appropriate, validated dietary assessment tools (DATs). However, methodological challenges and limited regional data hinder effective dietary surveillance. This scoping review identified and characterised DATs used among children and adolescents (5-18 years) in Latin America, examining tool types, features, validation and regional co

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, are expanding across Australia, Central America, and the Caribbean, driven by obesity, diabetes, and social disadvantage. The authors synthesize contemporary epidemiology, highlighting rising prevalence, projected surges in advanced disease and mortality, and heterogeneity by most relevant sociodemographic characteristics. They outline pragmatic, resource-adaptable care pathways that begin with Fibrosis-4 in primary care and escalate to elastography or direct fib

BACKGROUND: Improving access to opioids in Latin America requires better understanding of prescription patterns in palliative care.
AIM: To describe opioid prescribing patterns, including types and doses in morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD), among patients receiving palliative care, including patients with cancer and non-cancer conditions in Latin America.
DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.
DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, LILACS and SciELO from inception to January 2025.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the place of death and associated factors among individuals in Latin American countries, with a particular focus on chronic conditions and serious health-related suffering.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted across five databases in May 2024 following PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies included data on the place of death of at least one Latin American country.
RESULTS: Twenty-one studies with data from 12 Latin American countries were included. Hospital was the most frequent place of death in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Uruguay, whil

PURPOSE: This study, based on a bibliometric analysis in the field of cardiac rehabilitation in Latin America, aims to (1) describe the number of publications per year, journal, country affiliation, and contributing authors; (2) identify collaborative networks; and (3) determine emerging research trends.
REVIEW METHODS: A defined search strategy was implemented in Scopus for documents indexed up to September 2023. The retrieved records were analyzed using VantagePoint software (Search Technology, 15.2) to extract activity indicators (publication frequency, countries, institutions, and authors

BACKGROUND: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is rare genetic liver disorders that often present with early-onset cholestasis, pruritus, and potential progression to severe liver complications. This article outlines consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and management of PFIC tailored to Latin American healthcare providers.
METHODS: A working group of 10 hepatologists across Latin America utilized the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (P.I.C.O.) framework to address critical clinical questions related to PFIC's epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. A

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disorder involving progressive stenosis of the internal carotid arteries and abnormal collateral vessel formation. While more prevalent in East Asia, MMD also affects Latin American populations, where clinical features and outcomes are less well defined. This study provides a systematic review of MMD in Latin America, complemented by an illustrative case.
METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched for case reports, series, and cohort stud

PURPOSE: In 2014, TriNetX launched a U.S.-based federated network of health system electronic health records (EHR) that is now used in academic and industry-sponsored studies and includes more than 250 health care organizations (HCOs) globally. The network expanded to Latin America in 2018, where currently there are over 40 HCO partners in Brazil and Colombia. This manuscript describes the TriNetX LATAM Collaborative Network and outlines how it may support observational studies and clinical trials.
METHODS: We queried the LATAM Collaborative Network to determine patient counts for selected di

BACKGROUND: Syphilis in pregnancy and congenital syphilis (CS) remain major public health challenges in Latin America despite long-standing elimination initiatives. CS incidence continues to rise, although diagnosis and treatment are available, reflecting persistent programmatic gaps. A systematic assessment of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) can help refine strategies and accelerate progress toward the elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of syphilis.
METHODS: We performed a qualitative SWOT analysis of public health policies addressing syphilis in pre

Segregation is a multidimensional phenomenon deeply entwined with historical, social, and ecological contexts. The ecology of segregation framework explores how social norms institutionalize racism, classism, and power dynamics to drive inequitable patterns of environmental benefits and hazards. The ecology of segregation has thus far been applied in the Global North, yet is relevant but not as well studied in the Global South and specifically Latin America. More work is needed to consider how the framework can be applied in other historic, sociocultural, and governance contexts. This paper ap

There exists a significant care gap in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in Latin America compared to the United States and Europe. This review aims to assess the clinical effectiveness of advanced therapies for patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) in Latin America. We conducted a targeted literature review of studies reporting clinical outcomes of advanced IBD therapies in Latin American countries. After applying pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were included. Data were extracted

HIV prevention efforts have traditionally focused on urban areas, yet about one-fourth of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. are in non-urban areas. This study explored rural and urban differences in perceived HIV risk; perceived HIV stigma; and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness, attitudes, beliefs, communication behaviors, and use to inform the development of communication messages to promote informed decision-making among available HIV prevention options, including PrEP. We conducted interviews, preceded by a brief survey, with 255 adults in 5 rural and 6 urban locations throughout the U.

BACKGROUND: Information about pediatric lymphoblastic lymphoma (LLy) in low- and middle-income countries is scarce. Thus, here we describe the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcome of a large cohort of children and adolescents with LLy in Latin America.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of pediatric patients with LLy treated at 10 institutions (2007-2017) that are members of the St. Jude Global Alliance.
RESULTS: A total of 126 patients were included: 60 (47.6%) had T-cell LLy, 49 (38.9%) had precursor B-cell LLy, and 17 (13.5%) had LLy with an unknown immunophenotyp
