Comparison of image quality assessments between interventional radiographers and interventional radiologists using digital subtraction angiography.

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to compare the image quality assessments of vascular anatomy between interventional radiographers and interventional radiologists using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) runs acquired during an interventional radiology procedure. APPROACH: Visual grading characteristics (VGC) analysis was used to assess image quality by comparing two groups of images, where one group consisted of procedures in which radiation dose was optimized (group A, n = 10 ) and one group where dose optimization was not performed (group B, n = 10 ). The radiation dose parameters we

Modified Intestinal Derotation Procedure with Reversed Kocherization to Facilitate Mesopancreas Excision During Pancreaticoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Although intestinal derotation procedure has advantages of facilitating mesopancreas excision during pancreaticoduodenectomy, the wide mobilization takes time and risks injuring other organs. This article describes a modified intestinal derotation procedure in pancreaticoduodenectomy and its clinical impact on short-term outcomes. METHODS: The modified procedure comprised the pinpoint mobilization of the proximal jejunum following reversed Kocherization. Among 99 consecutive patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy between 2016 and 2022, the short-term outcomes of pancreatic

Diet-induced obesity in young mice: Consequences on the pancreatic intrinsic nervous system control of insulin secretion.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity has become a pandaemic even in children. We aimed to investigate the impact of obesity in youth on later pancreatic intrinsic nervous system (PINS) phenotype and control of insulin secretion. METHODS: Young mice (5-week-old, T0 group) were fed either a normal diet (ND group) or a Western diet (WD group) for 12 weeks. Pancreas nervous system density, PINS phenotype and pancreas anatomy were analysed by immunohistochemistry at T0 and in adulthood (ND and WD groups). Insulin secretion was also studied in these 3 groups using a new model of ex vivo pancreatic culture, where

Prevalence of hepatitis B infection in beta thalassaemia major patients.

BACKGROUND: Tricuspid regurgitation may be a precursor for heart failure, reduced functional capacity, and poor survival. A human compatible experimental model is required to understand the pathophysiology of the tricuspid valve disease as a basis for validating novel tricuspid valve interventions before clinical use. The study aim was to evaluate and compare the tricuspid valve anatomy of porcine and human hearts. METHODS: The anatomy of the tricuspid valve and the surrounding structures that affect the valve during a cardiac cycle were examined in detail in 100 fresh and 19 formalin-fixed p

Pre-Glenn CT: how I do it.

Cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) provides high-resolution imaging of cardiac and vascular structures. Improvements in temporal and spatial resolution, combined with radiation dose reduction and rapid image acquisition, have led to wide adoption of this technology in patients with congenital heart disease of all ages and heart rates. Patients with single ventricle heart disease are a complex patient population with variable underlying anatomy. Typically, a stepwise approach of three palliative interventions is performed, culminating in the Fontan procedure to separate the systemic

Micro-CT Analysis of Rodent Temporal Bones: Identifying Optimal Species for Otological Research.

OBJECTIVES: Rodents are used in most otological research studies and the choice of the most appropriate animal model may be crucial in studies of ear diseases and in the development of effective treatments. Here, we used micro-CT to compare temporal bone anatomy between four rodent model animals (guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, and mice) and humans, aiming to better characterize the anatomy of the inner and middle ear, and facial nerve to support informed animal model selection in otologic research. METHODS: We generated three-dimensional reconstructions and measured the various middle (tympanic

Horner syndrome after carotid sheath surgery in a pig: anatomic study of cervical sympathetic chain.

In an experimental model, iatrogenic Horner syndrome developed after a right carotid sheath surgery in an infant pig (Sus scrofa). Horner syndrome is a classic clinical triad consisting of ipsilateral eyelid ptosis, pupil miosis, and facial anhydrosis. This syndrome results from cervical sympathetic chain (CSC) paresis and usually is acquired in humans. To determine whether the development of Horner syndrome in this situation could be attributed to pig anatomy, we compared the anatomy of the CSC in pigs and humans, by using 10 infant (age, 1 to 3 wk) pig cadavers. The CSC and cranial cervical

Endoscope-assisted far-lateral transcondylar approach to the skull base.

The far-lateral transcondylar approach was used in this cadaveric study in an attempt to evaluate the usefulness of endoscope-assisted microsurgery in this region of the skull base. The study was carried out using 4 latex-injected, formalin-fixed cadaver heads. After initial examination of intradural structures under an operating microscope, a zero degree 4 mm diameter solid-rod endoscope lens was introduced and guided into position under the direction of the operating microscope. Photographs of the regional anatomy were taken through this lens and through a 30 degree angled lens and compared

[Value of magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) in diagnosis of triplane fractures of the distal tibia].

The rare transitional fractures occur in adolescents at a time of incomplete dosis of the epiphysis. The anatomy of this fracture type is complex with the fracture line running in multiple planes. Conventional plain film radiographs often underestimate the extent and geometry of the fracture due to its transverse components. This study was performed to asses the benefit of MR-imaging compared to plain film radiographs in diagnosis and analysis regarding fracture-type, anatomy and dislocation of fracture. During a time period of 18 months we treated 15 patients with a fracture of the distal tib

Radial-Sectional CT for Tricuspid Valve Intervention Planning: A 4-Patient Clinical Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Isolated tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is an independent mortality predictor. Despite improved surgical outcomes, complex tricuspid valve anatomy makes precise repair challenging. We evaluated the utility of computed tomography (CT) with radial-sectional view (RSV) for procedural planning and postoperative assessment. CASE SERIES: Four patients with severe TR underwent surgical repair. Preoperative CT-RSV, generated using standard imaging workstations, provided a comprehensive anatomical map. Radial planes centered on the septal leaflet visualized coaptation gaps with anterior/post

Understanding the mismatch between in-vivo and in-silico rhinomanometry.

Numerical simulations and clinical measurements of nasal resistance are in quantitative disagreement. The order of magnitude of this mismatch, that sometimes exceeds 100%, is such that known sources of uncertainty cannot explain it. The goal of the present work is to examine a source of bias introduced by the design of medical devices, which has not been considered until now as a possible explanation. We study the effect of the location of the probe on the rhinomanometer that is meant to measure the ambient pressure. Rhinomanometry is carried out on a 3D silicone model of a patient-specific an

Foraging with the frontal cortex: A cross-species evaluation of reward-guided behavior.

Efficient foraging is essential to survival and depends on frontal cortex in mammals. Because of its role in psychiatric disorders, frontal cortex and its contributions to reward procurement have been studied extensively in both rodents and non-human primates. How frontal cortex of these animal models compares is a source of intense debate. Here we argue that translating findings from rodents to non-human primates requires an appreciation of both the niche in which each animal forages as well as the similarities in frontal cortex anatomy and function. Consequently, we highlight similarities an

The Lisfranc Injury: A Literature Review of Anatomy, Etiology, Evaluation, and Management.

Despite being first described in the 1800s, the Lisfranc injury remains one of the most controversial topics in foot and ankle surgery. From the basic anatomy of the ligament complex to the optimal diagnostic and management methods, new research both sharpens and yet confounds our understanding of this unique injury. This article reviews the literature from established and classic papers to recent studies evaluating newer techniques. We discuss the unique bony and ligamentous anatomy, which confer strength to the Lisfranc complex, the typical mechanisms of injury, the most common classificatio

Airway management in patients with deep neck infections: A retrospective analysis.

Securing the airway in patients undergoing surgical intervention to control a deep neck infection (DNI) is challenging for anesthesiologists due to the distorted airway anatomy, limited mouth opening, tissue edema, and immobility. It is critical to assess the risk of a potential difficult airway and prepare the most appropriate airway management method. We reviewed our anesthetic experiences managing patients with DNIs, focusing on the need for video-laryngoscope or awake fiberoptic intubation beyond a standard intubation from the anesthesiologist's perspective. When patients had infections in t
