Ancylostoma ceylanicum Hookworm in Myanmar Refugees, Thailand, 2012-2015.

During 2012-2015, US-bound refugees living in Myanmar-Thailand border camps (n = 1,839) were surveyed for hookworm infection and treatment response by using quantitative PCR. Samples were collected at 3 time points: after each of 2 treatments with albendazole and after resettlement in the United States. Baseline prevalence of Necator americanus hookworm was 25.4%, Ancylostoma duodenale 0%, and Ancylostoma ceylanicum (a zoonosis) 5.4%. Compared with N. americanus prevalence, A. ceylanicum hookworm prevalence peaked in younger age groups, and blood eosinophil concentrations during A. ceylanicum

Understanding Heterogeneity in the Impact of National Neglected Tropical Disease Control Programmes: Evidence from School-Based Deworming in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) treatment programmes occurs in varied environmental, social and economic contexts. Programme impact will be influenced by factors that affect the reduction in the prevalence and intensity of infections following treatment, as well as the subsequent rate of reinfection. To better understand the heterogeneity of programme impact and its underlying reasons, we investigated the influence of contextual factors on reduction in STH infection as part of the national school based deworming (SBD) programme in Kenya. Characterisation of hookworm heat shock factor binding protein (HSB-1) during heat shock and larval activation.

When hookworm infective L3s infect their mammalian host, they undergo a temperature shift from that of the ambient environment to that of their endothermic host. Additionally, L3s living in the environment can be exposed to temperature extremes associated with weather fluctuations. The heat shock response (HSR) is a conserved response to heat shock and other stress that involves the expression of protective heat shock proteins (HSPs). The HSR is controlled by heat shock factor-1 (HSF-1), a conserved transcription factor that binds to a heat shock element in the promoter of HSPs, causing their

Impact of population structure on genetic diversity of a potential vaccine target in the canine hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum).

Ancylostoma caninum is a globally distributed canine parasitic nematode. To test whether positive selection, population structure, or both affect genetic variation at the candidate vaccine target Ancylostoma secreted protein 1 (asp-1), we have quantified the genetic variation in A. caninum at asp-1 and a mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox-1), using the statistical population analysis tools found in the SNAP Workbench. The mitochondrial gene cox-1 exhibits moderate diversity within 2 North American samples, comparable to the level of variation observed in other parasitic nema

Variation between ASP-1 molecules from Ancylostoma caninum in China and the United States.

Hookworm infection continues to be a serious problem in rural areas of China. Rapid reinfection and high cost limit the effectiveness of deworming programs. Vaccination offers an attractive alternative to mass chemotherapy. However, variation in vaccine antigens from field hookworm populations could conceivably limit efficacy of a vaccine developed from laboratory strains. Reported here are initial experiments to ascertain levels of molecular variation in a promising vaccine antigen, ASP-1, from the dog hookworm Ancylostoma caninum. ASP-1 from a Chinese strain of A. caninum was isolated from a

Immunosuppression in Nigerians with hookworm infection.

T rosette cells results in patients with (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) hookworm infection, divided into groups on the basis of the degree of anaemia (Group I had marked anaemia Hb 1-7, hypochromia ), Group II had moderate anaemia (Hb 8-11, hypochromia ++) and Group III had no signs of anaemia despite the underlying hookworm infection), were compared with results in 28 healthy controls who had no signs of other infection and excreting no ova of hookworm or other parasites. The level of sheep erythrocyte rosette-forming T-lymphocytes (SE-TL) in the patients (Group I:42 +/- 8%; G

Persistence of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas.

The persistence and interrelationships of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas were determined; data were collected at 4-yr intervals (1979, 1983, and 1987). The a priori expectation was that a defined recurrent group of helminth species persisted over time and that the respective helminth species were stable in terms of their abundances. The Fager index and subsequent recurrent group analysis indicated a small group of taxonomically unrelated recurring species of helminths that always demonstrated affinities with each other and occasional

Efficacy of ivermectin in a beef-based chewable formulation against Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala in dogs.

The effective dosage of a chewable formulation of ivermectin was determined in 35 young dogs with induced infections of Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala. Dogs were inoculated with these parasites and held until the infections were patent. Within each of 7 replicates, dogs were allocated randomly to 1 of 5 treatment groups: vehicle control, or ivermectin at 6, 12, 18, or 24 micrograms/kg. Chewable treatments were tailored to body weight. Seven or 8 days after treatment, parasites were recovered using standard techniques. All 7 controls had adult A. caninum (geometric mean = 35.5)

Efficacy of an ivermectin/pyrantel pamoate chewable formulation against the canine hookworms, Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum.

The effectiveness of the combination of pyrantel pamoate (5 mg kg-1) and ivermectin (6 micrograms kg-1) against the canine hookworms Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum was determined. This combination is intended for monthly use as a heartworm preventative and for treatment and control of canine hookworms. The formulation was found to be effective (99.6% reduction in worm burdens) against both species of hookworms in experimentally infected dogs. No adverse effects due to the drug combination were observed in any dog during the course of this study.

[Aetiology and therapy of Mooren's ulcer (author's transl)].

A report is given of 34 cases of Ulcus rodens of the eye (Mooren), which were examined and treaded during a period of five years in Togo, West Africa. The cases were divided into two groups according to the development of the disease. In fourteen cases the progress of the disease was arrested by local treatment (described individually for each eye), and by simultaneous treatment of the Helminthosis (Ascaris lumbricoides and Ankylostoma duodenale), from which the patients were also suffering. It seems likely that Ulcus rodens is caused by an antigen-antibody reaction to Helminth toxins.

Pyruvate kinase deficiency anemia with terminal myelofibrosis and osteosclerosis in a beagle.

A 15-month-old male Beagle with chronic hemolytic anemia was found to have erythrocytic pyruvate kinase deficiency and, terminally, myelofibrosis and osteosclerosis. The dog's erythron was studied by procedures that enabled close comparison with congenital hemolytic anemia (pyruvate kinase deficiency) of Basenji dogs. The affected dog's sire, dam, and one littermate--each clinically and hematologically normal--were found to have 50% reduction in erythrocytic pyruvate kinase (PK) activity.

Investigation of risk factors associated with Ancylostoma spp. infection and the benzimidazole F167Y resistance marker polymorphism in dogs from the United States.

Ancylostoma caninum is the most significant intestinal nematode parasite of dogs. We acquired fecal surveillance data from a large population of dogs in the United States (US). A diagnostic test using real-time PCR (qPCR) for Ancylostoma spp. and allele-specific qPCR detecting the SNP F167Y in the isotype 1 of the Beta-tubulin gene, was used in 885,424 randomized canine fecal samples collected between March 2022 and December 2023. Overall, Ancylostoma spp. had a prevalence of 1.76% (15,537/885,424), with the highest in the South 3.73% (10,747/287,576), and the lowest in the West 0.45% (632/140

Levels of Ancylostoma infections and phylogenetic analysis of cox 1 gene of A. ceylanicum in stray cat faecal samples from Guangzhou, China.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is a common zoonotic nematode. Cats act as natural reservoirs of the hookworm and are involved in transmitting infection to humans, thus posing a potential risk to public health. The prevalence of feline A. ceylanicum in Guangzhou (South China) was surveyed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). In total, 112 faecal samples were examined; 34.8% (39/112) and 43.8% (49/112) samples were positive with hookworms by microscopy and PCR method, respectively. Among them, 40.8% of samples harboured A. ceylanicum. Twelve positive A. ceyla

Vaccination with neutrophil inhibitory factor reduces the fecundity of the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum.

Neutrophil inhibitory factor (NIF), a protein isolated from hookworms of the genus Ancylostoma, inhibits CD11b/18-dependent leucocyte function, binding to the I domain of CD11b. Historically, NIF was serendipitously isolated from whole worm extracts during a search for novel antihaemostatic agents, and little is known of its source or biological significance to the parasite. NIF has also been identified as a possible hookworm vaccine candidate. Ancylostoma ceylanicum recombinant NIF, expressed in its active form in Pichia pastoris, was purified and its functional activity confirmed using neutr

Intestinal helminthiasis and anaemia in youngsters from Matriz da Luz, district of São Lourenço da Mata, state of Pernambuco, Brazil.

A group of youngsters (4-18 years old) in northeast Brazil was studied to establish the prevalence of anaemia and intestinal parasitism, as well as to analyze the correlation between them. Two criteria were used to determine the state of anaemia, the level of haemoglobin and the mean of corpuscular volume. The first was considered a single criterion and the second an associated criteria, used in an attempt to correlate anaemia with iron deficiency. The prevalence of intestinal parasitism was 93%, while the prevalence of anaemia was 43.1% and 16.1% according to the criteria employed (single or
