Feeding en route: Prey availability and traits influence prey selection by an avian predator on migration.

During animal migration, ephemeral communities of taxa at all trophic levels co-occur over space and time. The interactions between predators and prey along migration corridors are ecologically and evolutionarily significant. However, these interactions remain understudied in terrestrial systems and warrant further investigations using novel approaches. We investigated the predator-prey interactions between a migrating avivorous predator and ephemeral avian prey community in the fall migration season. We tested for associations between avian traits and prey selection and hypothesized that prey

Hyperdiversity and functional potential of the coral mycobiome: characterising host-specific and environmentally driven niches across the South China Sea reefs using long-read 28S rRNA metabarcoding.

Coral-associated fungi are an integral yet understudied component of the coral holobiont. To elucidate their diversity, drivers, and potential functions, we conducted a comprehensive survey of 104 coral samples representing eight genera across three environmentally distinct reef regions in the South China Sea. Utilizing long-read 28S rRNA gene sequencing and a curated multi-source reference database, we significantly enhanced the taxonomic resolution of coral-associated fungi. A total of 15,244 OTUs belonging to fungi were clustered, representing 16 phyla, 61 classes, 84 orders, 117 families,

Case report: ophthalmomyiasis externa in Dallas County, Texas.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa is an uncommon condition in North America. If not recognized and managed accordingly, it can be complicated by the potentially fatal condition ophthalmomyiasis interna. Ophthalmomyiasis externa is mainly caused by the sheep bot fly Oestrus ovis; thus, it is more common in farming communities. We report a case of ophthalmomyiasis externa in a young woman from Dallas County, Texas, who had no known history of contact with farm animals.

Neuropsychology of autism.

Childhood autism is a syndrome characterized by a triad of abnormalities in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and imaginative activity. It is clinically heterogeneous, however, and probably represents a family of syndromes, each of which is the result of a different but related type of brain dysfunction. So far, there is no direct evidence for involvement of particular brain systems, although analogies to other disorders in humans and experimental animals do allow some plausible hypotheses.

Somatic cell fate maintenance in mouse fetal testes via autocrine/paracrine action of AMH and activin B.

Fate determination and maintenance of fetal testes in most mammals occur cell autonomously as a result of the action of key transcription factors in Sertoli cells. However, the cases of freemartin, where an XX twin develops testis structures under the influence of an XY twin, imply that hormonal factor(s) from the XY embryo contribute to sex reversal of the XX twin. Here we show that in mouse XY embryos, Sertoli cell-derived anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and activin B together maintain Sertoli cell identity. Sertoli cells in the gonadal poles of XY embryos lacking both AMH and activin B transdi

'Anti-malaria month'--a step forward in multisectoral collaboration and community involvement in malaria control.

For a long time malaria control in India has largely been a government responsibility with little involvement of the community at large, and other sectors of the economy in the control efforts. There is now increasing realisation that involvement of the community and a multi-sectoral approach should be essential components of the malaria control strategy. The National Malaria Eradication Programme is accordingly laying greater emphasis on coordination with other sectors of the economy, and changing community perceptions and health-related behaviour. A massive programme of community mobilisatio

Community-based approach to schistosomiasis control.

With few exceptions, efforts to control schistosomiasis have relied upon ongoing community cooperation with "outsiders' rather than creating within the community the capacity and means for carrying out ongoing disease control measures with minimal external support. Offered as a useful model is a program in Kaele subdivision, Extreme North Province, Cameroon designed to establish and integrate within the primary health care (PHC) system the control of urinary schistosomiasis, hyperendemic in the region. At the community level, and with minimal dependence upon external resources, culturally appr

Teeth Baring as a Model to Understand Complex Facial Signals in a Tolerant Macaque Species.

Facial communication regulates many aspects of social life in human and nonhuman primates. Empirically identifying distinct facial expressions and their underlying functions can help illuminate the evolution of species' communicative complexity. We focused on bared-teeth faces (BTFs), a highly versatile facial expression in the tolerant macaque Macaca tonkeana. By employing a diverse array of techniques (MaqFACS, unsupervised cluster analysis, Levenshtein distance, NetFACS), we quantitatively discriminated two distinct BTFs: bared-teeth (BT) and open mouth bared-teeth (OMBT), and evaluated the

Thermal consequences of colour and near-infrared reflectance.

The importance of colour for temperature regulation in animals remains controversial. Colour can affect an animal's temperature because all else being equal, dark surfaces absorb more solar energy than do light surfaces, and that energy is converted into heat. However, in reality, the relationship between colour and thermoregulation is complex and varied because it depends on environmental conditions and the physical properties, behaviour and physiology of the animal. Furthermore, the thermal effects of colour depend as much on absorptance of near-infrared ((NIR), 700-2500 nm) as visible (300-

Selective olfactory attention of a specialised predator to intraspecific chemical signals of its prey.

Prey-specialised predators have evolved specific cognitive adaptations that increase their prey searching efficiency. In particular, when the prey is social, selection probably favours the use of prey intraspecific chemical signals by predatory arthropods. Using a specialised ant-eating zodariid spider, Zodarion rubidum, which is known to prey on several ant species and possesses capture and venom adaptations more effective on Formicinae ants, we tested its ability to recognise chemical cues produced by several ant species. Using an olfactometer, we tested the response of Z. rubidum towards ai

The polarity of axon growth in the wings of Drosophila melanogaster.

We have analyzed the growth of axons in the wings of the mutants Hairy wing and hairy of Drosophila melanogaster. These mutants produce many supernumerary bristle organs and sensilla campaniformia, whose axons grow between the two wing epithelia and can be visualized in both pupal and adult stages. The sensory axons of wild-type animals follow two paths in the wing, within longitudinal veins L1 and L3, and always grow with a distal to proximal polarity. In the mutants, all axons following these two paths likewise grow with correct polarity. Axons elsewhere in the wing, however, are found to gr

Viral metagenomics reveals the RNA viral composition of herbivorous wildlife on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

RNA viruses, a widely distributed group of pathogens in nature, possess exceptionally high genetic diversity and rapid evolutionary potential. High-altitude ecosystems, represented by the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with their unique environmental conditions, may harbor distinct viral communities. However, there remains a lack of systematic understanding regarding the composition and distribution of RNA viruses in wildlife under such extreme environments. In this study, a total of 741 fecal samples were collected from three regions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and viral metagenomics technology was

Maternal immune activation alters bout structure of rat 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations.

Dysfunctional sequencing of behaviour and cognition is observed in schizophrenia across multiple domains, including during communication. We examined whether maternal immune activation (MIA), a risk factor for schizophrenia, disrupted the sequential organization of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in a rat model. We analysed the structure of bursts of 50-kHz USVs (bouts) in two independent datasets (paired-rat: 19 control, 18 MIA; reward paradigm: 18 control, 20 MIA), using a Damerau-Levenshtein analysis with a k-fold cross-validation procedure. MIA animals showed greater variability in their b

Characteristics of the Gut Microbiota in Different Segments of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Big-Eyed Bamboo Snake (Pseudoxenodon macrops).

Snakes are model animals to study energy balance, but studies on the gut microbiota of the animals are rather scarce. To fill the gap, we used metagenome sequencing to investigate the microbial community composition and adaptability in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine of Big-eyed Bamboo Snake. The results showed that there was no significant differences in α-diversity among different gastrointestinal segments. Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, and Bacillota were the most abundant phyla. The dominant genera in the stomach and small intestine were similar, while those in the large i

Gastroenteric parasite of wild Galliformes in the Italian Alps: implication for conservation management.

This study provides insights about the diversity, prevalence and distribution of alpine wild galliformes gastrointestinal parasite community, trying to fill a gap in the scientific information currently available in scientific literature. The analysis included three host species: 77 rock partridge (Alectoris graeca saxatilis), 83 black grouse (Tetrao tetrix tetrix) and 26 rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta helveticus) shot during the hunting seasons 2008-2015. Parasites isolated were Ascaridia compar, Capillaria caudinflata and cestodes. The rock ptarmigan was free from gastrointestinal parasites, w

First molecular detection and genetic characterization of Coxiella burnetii in Zambian dogs and rodents.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is a zoonotic pathogen associated with sylvatic or domestic transmission cycles, with rodents being suspected to link the two transmission cycles. Infection and subsequent disease in humans has historically been associated with contact with infected livestock, especially sheep. However, recently there have been reports of Q fever outbreaks associated with contact with infected rodents and dogs. Studies exploring the potential role of these animal hosts in the epidemiology of Q fever in many developing countries in Africa are very limited. This

Modulations of the chicken cecal microbiome and metagenome in response to anticoccidial and growth promoter treatment.

With increasing pressures to reduce or eliminate the use of antimicrobials for growth promotion purposes in production animals, there is a growing need to better understand the effects elicited by these agents in order to identify alternative approaches that might be used to maintain animal health. Antibiotic usage at subtherapeutic levels is postulated to confer a number of modulations in the microbes within the gut that ultimately result in growth promotion and reduced occurrence of disease. This study examined the effects of the coccidiostat monensin and the growth promoters virginiamycin a
