BACKGROUND: Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by imperforate anus, dysplastic ears, thumb malformations, and other abnormalities. Previous studies have revealed that mutations in the SALL1 gene can disrupt normal development, resulting in the characteristic features of Townes-Brocks syndrome. Spalt-like transcription factors (SALLs) are highly conserved proteins that play important roles in various cellular processes, including embryonic development, cell differentiation, and cell survival. Over 400 different variants or mutations have been reported in the S

OBJECTIVE: We present the application of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in late gestation in a pregnancy associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and trisomy 22 confined placental mosaicism (CPM).
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old pregnant woman underwent chorionic villus sampling (CVS) at 12 weeks of gestation. The pregnancy was conceived by in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. CVS revealed a karyotype of 47,XY,+22 in all of 15 cultured chorionic villi cells. Array comparative genomic hybridization analysis on uncultured chorionic villi revealed a result

BACKGROUND: Advances in neonatal intensive care have led to an increased survival of very low birth weight (VLBW, <1,500 g) and extremely low birth weight infants (ELBW, <1,000 g). Several abnormalities may occur in these children, e.g. esophageal atresia (EA), imperforate anus or abdominal wall defects. Correction of EA is often performed as a staged procedure in this group of patients.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility of a primary correction of EA in 4 ELBW and VLBW infants.
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2004, 4 infants below 1,200 g were operated on in our institution with a diagnosis

BACKGROUND: In 2010, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution calling upon countries to prevent birth defects where possible. Though birth defects surveillance programs are an important source of information to guide implementation and evaluation of preventive interventions, many countries that shoulder the largest burden of birth defects do not have surveillance programs. This paper shares the results of a hospital-based birth defects surveillance program in Uganda which, can be adopted by similar resource-limited countries.
METHODS: All informative births, including live births, stillb

OBJECTIVE: Soft tissue expansion is a technique useful in reconstruction when a shortage of tissue exists. This study presents an investigation on using chronic balloon expansion in the urethral and vaginal reconstruction of high persistent cloaca.
METHODS: The common channel was expanded by a balloon, which was progressively inflated over 3-4 weeks at a pressure of 30-50 mmHg until an adequate amount of tissue was obtained. The expanded channel was longitudinally split into anterior and posterior segments: the former was approximated to form a neourethra in continuity with the reconstructed

Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is a well-described genetic syndrome characterized by anal, ear, and thumb anomalies and variable expressivity. Over 60 nonsense and frameshift mutations have been identified in SALL1, the zinc finger transcription factor causing TBS, and are proposed to cause disease via a dominant negative mechanism. In contrast, only four deletions have been described, with mild phenotypes reported as a result of haploinsufficiency. We report on a family with features of TBS in whom a novel 149 kb deletion spanning the SALL1 gene was identified by high resolution cytogenetics SN

Low anorectal malformation comprises about half of all anorectal anomalies. Most of the literature concerning management of anorectal anomalies is centred around the treatment and outcome of high anomalies. The management of low anomalies has been considered significantly less challenging than high anomalies. Also, the outcome of low anomalies has traditionally been considered good. However, recent more critical long-term follow-up reports show a different picture. Many patients with low anomalies suffer from long-term anorectal functional problems, especially constipation but also soiling tha

Caudal duplication syndrome is a rare entity in which structures derived from the embryonic cloaca and notochord are duplicated to various extents. The term encompasses a spectrum and often is quoted as one type of incomplete separation of monovular twins. The authors present more evidence giving credence to caudal twining as the mechanism behind the syndrome. The authors report successful surgical management of a full-term infant with a constellation of anomalies of caudal duplication syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Most cases of sacral dysgenesis are considered to be sporadic events. We present two families in whom the presence of associated clinical features prompted specific investigation of chromosome 7, leading to the identification of an underlying chromosome 7q deletion causing sacral dysgenesis. All affected individuals had microcephaly and developmental delay. Detailed cytogenetic studies confirmed that all three affected individuals had a deletion of chromosome 7q associated with their sacral dysgenesis, developmental delay and related problems. The three affected patients were studi

The volumes of the external and internal anal-sphincter muscles, determined by three-dimensional (3d) endosonography, are linear to each other and to the body-height and body-surface ratios in normal children. In patients with an operation of the sphincter muscles, the reduced volume of the external sphincter system permits a differentiation of incontinent children; the volume of the internal sphincter muscles, however, doesn't give a significant difference nor does the muscle-thickness. An acceptable estimation of the sphincter muscles volume can be made with conventional endosonography by pl
