We describe two patients, one with peripheral arthritis, sacro-iliitis, positive HLA B27, and autoantibodies to smooth muscle and gastric parietal cell; the other with aphthoid ulcers, geographical tongue, conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis, peripheral arthralgia, and diarrhoea with distal proctocolitis. Neither patient would have been diagnosed as having urethritis on the basis of accepted microscopic criteria. In both patients, however, Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the prostatic fluid, but not the urethra.

The prevalence of 23 HLA antigens were examined in 21 patients with a typical Reiter's disease, 21 patients with incomplete Reiter's syndrome as well as 16 patients with non-gonococcal urethritis. HLA-B 27 antigen was found in 85,7% of patients with typical Reiter's disease as compared to 7,4% of 413 healthy controls. HLA-B 27 was also detectable in 57,1% of patients with clinical suspicion of Reiter's disease. No significant difference from the control frequencies of HLA specifities was found in patients with non-gonococcal urethritis. The association between HLA-B 27 and Reiter's syndrome is

Limited data exist regarding immune-mediated polyarthritis in dogs, particularly regarding reactive immune-mediated polyarthritis. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical presentations, the diagnostic findings, and the outcome of dogs diagnosed with presumptive primary and reactive immune-mediated polyarthritis in France, and to evaluate potential biomarkers for assessing treatment response. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for dogs diagnosed with immune-mediated polyarthritis between June 2004 and January 2020. Fifty-eight dogs were included, of which 43 diagnosed with

The spondyloarthropathies are a group of inflammatory arthritic conditions characterized by the absence of rheumatoid factor, and the presence of spondylitis, sacroiliitis, and an asymmetric peripheral arthritis. Familial aggregation and the presence of enthesitis, skin and mucous membrane lesions, bowel complaints, eye involvement, and aortic root dilatation are also features of these conditions. An association with HLA-B27 has been documented in the diseases constituting the spondyloarthropathies, including ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's disease/reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and

What are the environmental triggers and genetic susceptibilities underlying the development of autoimmune diseases? These and other questions were addressed at a recent meeting in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common chronic rheumatic disease of childhood, with a significant genetic component. Polymorphisms in proinflammatory cytokine genes are potential contributors to disease susceptibility. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-308G>A (rs1800629), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β)-511C>T (rs16944), and interleukin-6 (IL-6)-174G>C (rs1800795) variants and juvenile idiopathic arthritis in a Turkish cohort.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted involving 57 juvenile idiopathic arthrit

Rheumatic manifestations of HIV infection encompass a wide spectrum of disorders, arising from direct viral effects, immune dysregulation, opportunistic infections, or antiretroviral therapy (ART)-induced complications. These manifestations can occur at any stage of HIV, and include arthralgia, HIV-associated arthritis, spondyloarthropathies (SpA), inflammatory myopathies, vasculitides, and opportunistic musculoskeletal infections. Arthralgia is common and self-limiting, whereas HIV-associated arthritis mimics rheumatoid arthritis. SpA, particularly reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and

The term "enteropathic arthritis" describes joint manifestations that occur in conjunction with gastrointestinal disease. Underlying causes include inflammatory bowel disease, reactive arthritis, iatrogenic disease. Whipple's disease, and other gastrointestinal diseases. A possible association between Reiter's syndrome and human immunodeficiency virus infection also has been reported. These arthritic syndromes can be treated symptomatically, but long-term therapy should be directed at the underlying cause. In most cases, prognosis for survival and joint function is good.

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis of the knee in the pediatric patient is a diagnosis that requires prompt identification and treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical and laboratory parameters that allow differential diagnosis of septic arthritis from non-septic arthritis in children.
METHODS: Fifty-four pediatric patients with atraumatic isolated knee pain were retrospectively identified at three institutions and diagnosed with septic arthritis (SA, N = 28), Lyme arthritis (LA, N = 11), or transient synovitis (TS, N = 15). Clinical and laboratory data were analyzed to identif

During a five-year period, surgical release of the carpal tunnel was performed on 150 patients with median nerve compression. Seventeen (11%) had rheumatoid arthritis. Among this subgroup, six patients had anomalous muscles in the wrist and proximal palm. An additional patient with psoriatic arthritis demonstrated a comparable abnormality. No other patients in this series had similar findings. This statistically highly significant occurrence is probably related to additive effects of the two disorders in producing median nerve compression.

The sesamoids generally appear as small ovoid bones adjacent to articulations or at sites where tendons are angled about osseous surfaces. At either location they participate in joint afflictions, the pattern of abnormality being remarkably constant and predictable. Sesamoids may demonstrate osseous erosion in rheumatoid arthritis, bony proliferation or "whiskering" in rheumatoid variants, joint space narrowing and bony ankylosis in septic arthritis, and eburnation and osteophyte formation in osteoarthritis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. These changes become particularly importa

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that is so far incurable with long-term health risks. The high doses and frequent administration for the available RA drug always lead to adverse side effects. Aiming at the obstacles to achieving effective RA treatment, we prepared macrophage cell membrane-camouflaged nanoparticles (M-EC), which were assembled from epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and cerium(IV) ions. Due to its geometrical similarity to the active metal sites of a natural antioxidant enzyme, the EC possessed a high scavenge efficiency to various types of reac

The classification of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) comprises the classical ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which is characterized by already existing structural changes in the sacroiliac joints, and the so-called non-radiographic axSpA (nr-axSpA), in which by definition such changes are not present. This distinction is based on the ASAS classification criteria for axSpA, which are however not suitable for a diagnosis. According to the current classification, spondyloarthritis (SpA) includes axSpA, which can be associated with psoriasis and/or chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (CED), such as
