Surgical techniques in radiation induced temporal lobe necrosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiation induced brain injury ranges from acute reversible edema to late, irreversible radiation necrosis. Radiation induced temporal lobe necrosis is associated with permanent neurological deficits and occasionally progresses to death. OBJECTIVE: We present our experience with surgery on radiation induced temporal lobe necrosis (RTLN) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with special consideration of clinical presentation, surgical technique, and outcomes. METHOD: This retrospective study includes 12 patients with RTLN treated by the senior author between January 2010 and

A case of radiation-induced generalized morphea with prominent mucin deposition and tenderness.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced morphea is a rare complication of radiation therapy. The affected areas are generally restricted to the radiation field or to the nearby surrounding area. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old Japanese woman with a history of right breast cancer followed by adjuvant radiotherapy was referred our hospital because of 7-year history of symmetrical indurated erythematous plaques on her trunk. Three months after completion of irradiation, erythematous plaques developed on her right chest and gradually spread accompanied tenderness. She did not have a history of trauma to her rig

Twelve-month follow-up results of a trial utilizing Axxent electronic brachytherapy to deliver intraoperative radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) is emerging as a valid alternative to whole-breast radiation therapy (WBRT) in breast-conserving therapy (BCT) for early-stage breast cancer. Axxent electronic brachytherapy (EBX) is a form of portable, balloon-based APBI that utilizes an electronic source of kilovoltage irradiation delivery with minimal shielding requirements. As such, EBX becomes a logical and convenient modality for delivery of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). We report 1-year results and clinical outcomes of a trial that utilizes EBX to deliver IORT for pati

Long-term clinical outcomes of dissections after intracoronary beta-radiation with rhenium-188-diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid-filled balloon system.

BACKGROUND: Intracoronary radiation with a rhenium-188 ((188)Re)-filled balloon is safe and efficiently reduces restenosis, but there is a potential risk of a (188)Re-filled balloon induced dissection. Little is known about the effect of radiation on dissection resolution and the late clinical outcome of dissection after brachytherapy. METHODS: After successful catheter-based treatments of de novo or restenotic lesion, 256 patients were randomly assigned to the radiation or control group. The (188)Re-filled balloon system was designed to deliver 17.6 Gy in 1.0-mm tissue depth. RESULTS: Disse

Occupational cataracts and lens opacities in interventional cardiology (O'CLOC study): are X-Rays involved? Radiation-induced cataracts and lens opacities.

BACKGROUND: The eye is well known to be sensitive to clearly high doses (>2 Gy) of ionizing radiation. In recent years, however, cataracts have been observed in populations exposed to lower doses. Interventional cardiologists are repeatedly and acutely exposed to scattered ionizing radiation (X-rays) during the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures they perform. These "low" exposures may cause damage to the lens of the eye and induce early cataracts, known as radiation-induced cataracts. The O'CLOC study (Occupational Cataracts and Lens Opacities in interventional Cardiology) was designed to t

Association between author specialty and reported outcomes in non-randomized comparisons of prostatectomy versus radiation.

BACKGROUND: While the ProtecT randomized trial demonstrated comparable oncologic outcomes between radical prostatectomy (RP) and radiation therapy (RT) for localized prostate cancer, several retrospective studies have reported mixed findings. In this study, we investigated whether non-randomized studies tend to favor RP or RT and assessed whether the specialty of leading authors-urologists or radiation oncologists-correlates with study conclusions. METHODS: We identified non-randomized clinical studies published between 1993 and 2024 that compared RP and RT for localized prostate cancer and r

Longitudinal Assessment of Neurocognitive Outcomes and Correlation with Limbic System Radiation Doses in Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy for Central Nervous System Tumours: A preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy (RT) for central nervous system (CNS) malignancies can result in neurocognitive decline, affecting quality of life. While hippocampal-sparing approaches are well documented, limited data exist on the impact of radiation dose to other cognitive structures. This prospective study evaluates domain-specific cognitive changes following RT and explores correlations with radiation dose to key brain regions. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-five patients with primary CNS tumours undergoing focal radiotherapy, with or without concurrent chemotherapy, were enrolled. Neurocognitive func

Disparities in Radiation Therapy Utilization for Solitary Plasmacytoma of Bone: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) results from abnormal proliferation of plasma cells and accounts for 2-5% of all plasmacytic malignancies. Radiation therapy is the standard of care in treating SPB due to its efficacy in controlling disease progression and optimizing patient survival. However, prior studies have highlighted disparities in radiation therapy receipt among various cancer types. In this study, we aim to investigate whether similar sociodemographic and clinical disparities exist in the treatment of SPB through use of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End

Delta radiomics to track radiation response in lung tumors receiving stereotactic magnetic resonance-guided radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has become a standard treatment for early-stage lung cancer. However, the heterogeneous response to radiation at the tumor level poses challenges. Currently, standardized dosage regimens lack adaptation based on individual patient or tumor characteristics. Thus, we explore the potential of delta radiomics from on-treatment magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to track radiation dose response, inform personalized radiotherapy dosing, and predict outcomes. Axillary Recurrence in Sentinel Lymph Node Negative Mastectomy Patients at 16 Years Median Follow Up: Natural History in the Absence of Radiation.

BACKGROUND: Axillary recurrence following lumpectomy with a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is rare, possibly due to routine use of whole breast radiation. In this study, we characterized the rate of any axillary recurrence among mastectomy patients with a negative SLNB and no adjuvant radiation therapy. METHODS: We identified women who underwent mastectomy with SLNB for early-stage breast cancer (1999-2005) and included patients with pathologically negative nodes and no axillary dissection or adjuvant radiation. The primary outcome was ipsilateral axillary recurrence. RESULTS: A
