[Automatic recognition and analysis of hemiplegia gait].

In this paper, the research has been conducted by the Microsoft kinect for windows v2 for obtaining the walking trajectory data from hemiplegic patients, based on which we achieved automatic identification of the hemiplegic gait and sorted the significance of identified features. First of all, the experimental group and two control groups were set up in the study. The three groups of subjects respectively completed the prescribed standard movements according to the requirements. The walking track data of the subjects were obtained straightaway by Kinect, from which the gait identification feat

Towards automated patient-specific optimization of deep brain stimulation for movement disorders.

In this paper we present a simulation framework for automated optimization of deep brain stimulation (DBS) parameters based on the hand kinematics signal as the feedback signal, in patients with essential tremor. We used Gaussian Process regression (GPR) models to develop patient-specific models for predicting the effect of DBS on the hand kinematics using the clinical data that was recorded during DBS programming. In this framework, we characterized the performance of a Bayesian Optimization method to identify the optimal DBS parameters that maximized the clinical efficacy. Our results demons

Multi-layer framework of identifying placenta related research towards Placenta Curated Research Dataset (PCRD) development for the PAT project.

BACKGROUND: The placenta is a maternal-fetal organ that develops during pregnancy and provides nutrients, oxygen, and removal of waste products to the growing fetus. Better understanding of the placenta promises to help improve health of mothers and children, given its influence on health lasting a lifetime. However, the placenta is poorly understood due to its variability across different species and no live functions available after the baby is delivered. The Placenta Atlas Tool (PAT) project aims to leverage advanced computational approaches to meld numerous and diverse datasets into an int

Full Bayesian Comparative Phylogeography from Genomic Data.

A challenge to understanding biological diversification is accounting for community-scale processes that cause multiple, co-distributed lineages to co-speciate. Such processes predict non-independent, temporally clustered divergences across taxa. Approximate-likelihood Bayesian computation (ABC) approaches to inferring such patterns from comparative genetic data are very sensitive to prior assumptions and often biased toward estimating shared divergences. We introduce a full-likelihood Bayesian approach, ecoevolity, which takes full advantage of information in genomic data. By analytically int

Can scrotal circumference-based selection discard bulls with good productive and reproductive potential?

Nonlinear mixed models were used to describe longitudinal scrotal circumference (SC) measurements of Nellore bulls. Models comparisons were based on Akaike's information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, error sum of squares, adjusted R2 and percentage of convergence. Sequentially, the best model was used to compare the SC growth curve in bulls divergently classified according to SC at 18-21 months of age. For this, bulls were classified into five groups: SC < 28cm; 28cm ≤ SC < 30cm, 30cm ≤ SC < 32cm, 32cm ≤ SC < 34cm and SC ≥ 34cm. Michaelis-Menten model showed the best fit according

Kyasanur Forest Disease Classification Framework Using Novel Extremal Optimization Tuned Neural Network in Fog Computing Environment.

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) is a life-threatening tick-borne viral infectious disease endemic to South Asia and has been taking so many lives every year in the past decade. But recently, this disease has been witnessed in other regions to a large extent and can become an epidemic very soon. In this paper, a new fog computing based e-Healthcare framework has been proposed to monitor the KFD infected patients in an early phase of infection and control the disease outbreak. For ensuring high prediction rate, a novel Extremal Optimization tuned Neural Network (EO-NN) classification algorithm has

A Bayesian Decision-Support Tool for Child Sexual Abuse Assessment and Investigation.

In assessments of child sexual abuse (CSA) allegations, informative background information is often overlooked or not used properly. We therefore created and tested an instrument that uses accessible background information to calculate the probability of a child being a CSA victim that can be used as a starting point in the following investigation. Studying 903 demographic and socioeconomic variables from over 11,000 Finnish children, we identified 42 features related to CSA. Using Bayesian logic to calculate the probability of abuse, our instrument-the Finnish Investigative Instrument of Chil

Estimating Loss of Brucella Abortus Antibodies from Age-Specific Serological Data In Elk.

Serological data are one of the primary sources of information for disease monitoring in wildlife. However, the duration of the seropositive status of exposed individuals is almost always unknown for many free-ranging host species. Directly estimating rates of antibody loss typically requires difficult longitudinal sampling of individuals following seroconversion. Instead, we propose a Bayesian statistical approach linking age and serological data to a mechanistic epidemiological model to infer brucellosis infection, the probability of antibody loss, and recovery rates of elk (Cervus canadensi

Genetic evidence for subspecies differentiation of the Himalayan marmot, Marmota himalayana, in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The primary host of plague in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, is Marmota himalayana, which plays an essential role in the maintenance, transmission, and prevalence of plague. To achieve a more clear insight into the differentiation of M. himalayana, complete cytochrome b (cyt b) gene and 11 microsatellite loci were analyzed for a total of 423 individuals from 43 localities in the northeast of the QTP. Phylogenetic analyses with maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods showed that all derived haplotypes diverged into two primary well-supported monophyletic lineages, I and II, w

Classification of Horse Gaits Using FCM-Based Neuro-Fuzzy Classifier from the Transformed Data Information of Inertial Sensor.

In this study, we classify four horse gaits (walk, sitting trot, rising trot, canter) of three breeds of horse (Jeju, Warmblood, and Thoroughbred) using a neuro-fuzzy classifier (NFC) of the Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) type from data information transformed by a wavelet packet (WP). The design of the NFC is accomplished by using a fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm that can solve the problem of dimensionality increase due to the flexible scatter partitioning. For this purpose, we use the rider's hip motion from the sensor information collected by inertial sensors as feature data for the cla

Model-Based Geostatistical Mapping of the Prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: The initial endemicity (pre-control prevalence) of onchocerciasis has been shown to be an important determinant of the feasibility of elimination by mass ivermectin distribution. We present the first geostatistical map of microfilarial prevalence in the former Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) before commencement of antivectorial and antiparasitic interventions. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Pre-control microfilarial prevalence data from 737 villages across the 11 constituent countries in the OCP epidemiological database were used as ground-truth data. Objective Bayesian model selection for Cox regression.

There is now a large literature on objective Bayesian model selection in the linear model based on the g-prior. The methodology has been recently extended to generalized linear models using test-based Bayes factors. In this paper, we show that test-based Bayes factors can also be applied to the Cox proportional hazards model. If the goal is to select a single model, then both the maximum a posteriori and the median probability model can be calculated. For clinical prediction of survival, we shrink the model-specific log hazard ratio estimates with subsequent calculation of the Breslow estimate

[Analysis on molecular genetic evolution of Banna virus based on the 12th segment].

Objective: To understand the evolution characteristics of Banna viruses (BAVs) isolated worldwide from 1980 to 2012. Methods: In this study, a phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations was conducted on all available 12th segment of genes of BAVs isolated worldwide from 1980 to 2012 to investigate the evolutionary and epidemiologic dynamics of BAVs. Results: The Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of BAVs revealed that the common ancestor of BAVs appeared 315 (95%HPD: 63-619) years ago. The evolutionary rate of BAV based on the 12th segment gene was estimated to be 2.

Analysis of vaccination campaign effectiveness and population immunity to support and sustain polio elimination in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The world is closer than ever to a polio-free Africa. In this end-stage, it is important to ensure high levels of population immunity to prevent polio outbreaks. Here, we introduce a new method of assessing vaccination campaign effectiveness and estimating immunity at the district-level. We demonstrate how this approach can be used to plan the vaccination campaigns prospectively to better manage population immunity in Northern Nigeria. METHODS: Using Nigerian acute flaccid paralysis surveillance data from 2004-2014, we developed a Bayesian hierarchical model of campaign effectiven

Estimating the prevalence of multiple diseases from two-stage hierarchical pooling.

Testing protocols in large-scale sexually transmitted disease screening applications often involve pooling biospecimens (e.g., blood, urine, and swabs) to lower costs and to increase the number of individuals who can be tested. With the recent development of assays that detect multiple diseases, it is now common to test biospecimen pools for multiple infections simultaneously. Recent work has developed an expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the prevalence of two infections using a two-stage, Dorfman-type testing algorithm motivated by current screening practices for chlamydia and go

A Bayesian network meta-analysis: Comparing the clinical effectiveness of local corticosteroid injections using different treatment strategies for carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Local corticosteroid injections are commonly used to improve the short-term symptomatic severity and the functional status of the hands affected by carpal tunnel syndrome. We conducted a systematic review and Bayesian network-meta-analysis to compare the clinical effectiveness of local corticosteroid injections using different injection approaches. METHODS: Electronic literature in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and other sources were searched to identify clinical studies comparing different injection approaches with each

A multilevel approach to network meta-analysis within a frequentist framework.

Meta-analysis is a powerful tool to summarize knowledge. Pairwise or network meta-analysis may be carried out with multivariate models that account for the dependence between treatment estimates and quantify the correlation across studies. From a different perspective, meta-analysis may be viewed as a special case of multilevel analysis having a hierarchical data structure. Hence, we introduce an alternative frequentist approach, called multilevel network meta-analysis, which also allows to account for publication bias and the presence of inconsistency. We propose our approach for a three-leve

A Bayesian network meta-analysis for binary outcome: how to do it.

This study presents an overview of conceptual and practical issues of a network meta-analysis (NMA), particularly focusing on its application to randomised controlled trials with a binary outcome of interest. We start from general considerations on NMA to specifically appraise how to collect study data, structure the analytical network and specify the requirements for different models and parameter interpretations, with the ultimate goal of providing physicians and clinician-investigators a practical tool to understand pros and cons of NMA. Specifically, we outline the key steps, from the lite

Population-level differences in disease transmission: a Bayesian analysis of multiple smallpox epidemics.

Estimates of a disease's basic reproductive rate R0 play a central role in understanding outbreaks and planning intervention strategies. In many calculations of R0, a simplifying assumption is that different host populations have effectively identical transmission rates. This assumption can lead to an underestimate of the overall uncertainty associated with R0, which, due to the non-linearity of epidemic processes, may result in a mis-estimate of epidemic intensity and miscalculated expenditures associated with public-health interventions. In this paper, we utilize a Bayesian method for quanti

Bayesian space-time analysis of Echinococcus multilocularis-infections in foxes.

A total of 26,220 foxes that were hunted or found dead in Thuringia, Germany, between 1990 and 2009 were examined for infection with Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, and 6853 animals were found infected. The available data on the foxes including the location (local community; district) and the date of hunting/death were analyzed using a hierarchical Bayesian space-time model. The distribution of the model parameters and their variability was estimated on the basis of the sample size, the number of cases per spatial unit and time interval, and a
