Deferoxamine (DFO) was the standard of care for transfusional iron overload for >40 years, requiring subcutaneous infusion for 8-12 h/day, 5-7 days/week. Oral iron chelators are an important development, offering the potential to improve compliance and patients' quality of life. The composition of the headspace gas affected the growth dynamics of microbial populations and the biotransformation pattern of p-toluic acid in anoxic estuarine sediments. A new enzyme, geranylpyrophosphate:olivetolate geranyltransferase (GOT), the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of cannabinoids could be detected in extracts of young leaves of Cannabis sativa. The enzyme accepts geranylpyrophosphate (GPP) and to a lesser degree also nerylpyrophosphate (NPP) as a cosubstrate. Here we report that the bacterial catabolism of 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid 1 takes a different course in Rhodococcus rhodochrous N75 and Pseudomonas sp. strain HH35. The former organism accumulates a degradation metabolite of the acid which we isolated and identified as 2,6-dimethylhydroquinone 2. We report the effects of CBS-211 A, a synthetic retinoic acid analog, on a previously described experimental model of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in the rabbit. The metabolism of benzoic acid was examined in S. mansoni infected CBA mouse. The result showed that control animals dosed with 150 mg/kg benzoic acid resulted in urinary excretion of two metabolites, hippuric acid and benzoic acid glucuronide. Administration of the same dose to animal carrying S. mansoni for a period of over 6 weeks resulted in decreased formation of hippuric acid and total elimination of benzoic acid by glucuronide pathway.

An high-performance liquid chromatographic analytical method, which allows quantitative evaluation of both salicyloyl pyridixol and its metabolite salicylic acid, is reported. This method has demonstrated to possess the required specifications in terms of linearity, sensitivity, extraction recovery, reproducibility and specificity for pharmacokinetic investigations in both human subjects and experimental animals. The results obtained from an investigation on the rat are briefly discussed.

Sulphites, used extensively as preservatives in foods and soft drinks, are known to precipitate asthma attacks in 5-10% of susceptible children. Among children attending the Allergy Clinic at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town, many were found to be sensitive to sulphites. The basis of asthma therapy is modification of the environment and avoidance of precipitating factors. Medical personnel counselling parents of asthmatic children should be aware of this factor. A list of soft drinks containing sulphites and other preservatives is included.
