Reversing the pipeline: a 'human-first' multi-omics approach to cardiovascular discovery.

Despite significant biomedical advances, cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of global mortality. The traditional 'bench-to-bedside' research pipeline, which heavily relies on animal models to guide clinical translation, is often hampered by species-specific physiological differences, leading to high rates of clinical trial failures. In this Review, we advocate for a paradigm shift toward a 'human-first' discovery approach. We explore how integrating human cardiac tissue resources obtained from biopsies, surgical explants and autopsies with high-resolution multi-omics technologies (

Identification and Screening of Trace and Multityped Solvents Using Transpiration-Driven Electrokinetic Generation Principle.

Transpiration-driven electrokinetic power generators (TEPGs) hold promising potential for intelligent chemical sensing applications, enabling the efficient identification and screening of organic solvents. Here, we report a novel TEPG-based chemical sensor using MoS2-doped cellulose filter paper for efficient detection of poplar solvents like water, alcohols, and methanol. TEPGs operate by leveraging capillary-driven transpiration to induce solvent flow through porous materials, leading to ion migration and the formation of electrical double layers (EDLs) at the solid-liquid interfaces. Emerging Therapeutic Approaches Targeting Ferroptosis in Cancer: Focus on Immunotherapy and Nanotechnology.

Ferroptosis is a newly discovered form of programmed cell death characterized by iron overload, ROS accumulation, and lipid peroxidation. It is distinguished by unique morphological, biochemical, and genetic features and stands apart from other known regulated cell death mechanisms. Studies have demonstrated a close association between ferroptosis and various cancers, including liver cancer, lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer. Inducing ferroptosis has shown promising results in inhibiting tumor growth and reversing tumor progression. How

Classification of Actigraphy Records from Bipolar Disorder Patients Using Slope Entropy: A Feasibility Study.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) is an illness with high prevalence and a huge social and economic impact. It is recurrent, with a long-term evolution in most cases. Early treatment and continuous monitoring have proven to be very effective in mitigating the causes and consequences of BD. However, no tools are currently available for a massive and semi-automatic BD patient monitoring and control. Taking advantage of recent technological developments in the field of wearables, this paper studies the feasibility of a BD episodes classification analysis while using entropy measures, an approach successfully

Families dealing with the uncertainty of genetic disorders: the case of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Some scholars contend that genetic medicine is transforming the experience of illness and the social category of the family - bringing future risks into the present, and potentially strengthening familial biological bonds in light of these shared genetic risks. However, research has shown that genetic information is interpreted and acted upon through a rich repertoire of adaptable social, cultural and familial factors which pre-exist and interact with biomedical knowledge. This paper reports research into families living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a highly uncertain condition the man

Ferret and pig models of cystic fibrosis: prospects and promise for gene therapy.

Large animal models of genetic diseases are rapidly becoming integral to biomedical research as technologies to manipulate the mammalian genome improve. The creation of cystic fibrosis (CF) ferrets and pigs is an example of such progress in animal modeling, with the disease phenotypes in the ferret and pig models more reflective of human CF disease than mouse models. The ferret and pig CF models also provide unique opportunities to develop and assess the effectiveness of gene and cell therapies to treat affected organs. In this review, we examine the organ disease phenotypes in these new CF mo

Recent Achievements and Perspectives in Nebulization Devices for Anterior Segment Disease Treatment.

Ocular diseases pose significant therapeutic challenges due to the eye's intricate anatomy and efficient physiological clearance mechanisms, which result in the rapid elimination of topically administered drugs and an overall bioavailability of less than 5%. Anterior segment disorders-including keratitis, glaucoma, and dry eye syndrome-account for the majority of ophthalmic conditions and are primarily managed with pharmacological agents. However, due to extremely low drug bioavailability and poor patient compliance, their therapeutic outcomes often result in a decreased disease control rate o

Colorectal cancer detection by hyperspectral imaging using fluorescence excitation scanning.

Hyperspectral imaging technologies have shown great promise for biomedical applications. These techniques have been especially useful for detection of molecular events and characterization of cell, tissue, and biomaterial composition. Unfortunately, hyperspectral imaging technologies have been slow to translate to clinical devices - likely due to increased cost and complexity of the technology as well as long acquisition times often required to sample a spectral image. We have demonstrated that hyperspectral imaging approaches which scan the fluorescence excitation spectrum can provide increas
