Blood donor candidates and blood donations performed between 2005 and 2019 in Minas Gerais, Brazil: A time series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Time series studies related to blood donor candidates and blood donations are rare in Brazil. Population aging suggests a better understanding of the context related to blood donor candidates and blood donations performed. OBJECTIVE: The monthly series of candidates eligible to donate blood and actual donations between 2005 and 2019 at the Hemominas Foundation, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were described and analyzed. METHODS: Ten time series were constructed of blood donor candidates and blood donations. Each series covered the period from January 2005 to December 2019. The stationar

Seroprevalence of human cytomegalovirus in blood donors.

INTRODUCTION: Transfusions of blood are a vital component of medical treatment. On the other hand, infections linked to transfusions are possible risks. Blood collection, processing, and testing to ensure safety precautions are taken to reduce the chance of transfusion-transmitted illnesses are important. The cytomegaly virus (CMV) is transfusion-transmitted (TT) and is a major global health concern. Seropositivity rates for CMV range from 60% to 100% in the population. Among the most important infections that infect people with immunosuppression is CMV. The present study was conducted in respo

Hepatitis C virus antibodies and other markers of blood-transfusion-transmitted infection in multi-transfused Cuban patients.

BACKGROUND: HCV was initially identified in 1989 when it was found to be the primary causative agent of non-A, non-B hepatitis,a condition associated with high rates of progressive and end-stage liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Since then, appreciation of the significant worldwide health impact of HCV infection has grown. HCV infection was identified as a public health problem in Cuba in the 1990s. Despite universal blood donor screening, which was achieved in 1995 using the Cuban immunoassay system UMELISA HCV, the infection is still found in multi-transfused patients.

Human T-lymphotropic virus in Irish blood donors: Impact on future testing strategy.

AIM: A risk-based approach to the testing of blood donations for Human T-Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV) should include an assessment of blood donation seroepidemiology. The objectives of the present study were to determine the proportion of HTLV positive units in Irish blood donations, and subsequently, to estimate the current risk of transfusion transmitted HTLV (TT-HTLV). METHODS: Over 3 million donations screened between 1996 and 2020, were included in the study (n = 3,666,253). Factors considered in the assessment of TT-HTLV risk included: (I) HTLV seropositivity, (ii) probability of a leucode

Implementation of Bacterial Detection Methods into Blood Donor Screening - Overview of Different Technologies.

SUMMARY: BACKGROUND: Through the implementation of modern technology, such as nucleic acid testing, over the last two decades, blood safety has improved considerably in that the risk of viral infection is less than 1 in a million blood transfusions. By contrast, the residual risk of transfusion-associated bacterial infection is stable at approximately 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 3,000 in platelets. To improve blood safety with regard to bacterial infections, many countries have implemented bacterial screening methods as part of their blood donor screening programmes. METHODS: BACTERIAL DETECTION METHOD

[Endotoxicosis in surgery].

The question of general toxemia as an important problem in acute surgery has first been raised. In addition to the infection component attention is called to the presence of a pathologic focus (diseased internal organ) which is the main cause of diffuse peritonitis. Attention is given to sepsis and basedowian goiter with the IV degree thyrotoxicosis followed by pronounced toxemia. In addition to antibacterial therapy the authors recommend transfusion of fresh blood with heparin, forced diuresis, peritoneal dialysis hemosorption, ganglionic blockade with venous antiseptics and other methods to

Potential Pathomechanisms of Reverse Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI): An Under-Recognized Transfusion Complication.

Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a potentially fatal blood transfusion complication that is characterized by noncardiogenic pulmonary edema within 6 hours post-transfusion. Specific therapies are not available, thus understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms is essential. Currently, our understanding of the TRALI pathophysiology is based on a 2-hit requirement. The first hit constitutes a priming of the immune system associated with systemic inflammation. The second hit comes through transfused antibodies reactive against recipient leukocytes and/or endothelium, or biologi

Look-back of anti-HCV ELISA-positive, HCV-RNA PCR-negative donors and recipients of their blood products.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To establish the infectivity of anti-HCV ELISA-positive, but cDNA-PCR-negative blood components transfused before the introduction of routine anti-HCV blood donor screening, we enrolled recipients of such blood products in a look-back programme. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The blood components were donated by (A) RIBA-2-indeterminate and cDNA-PCR-negative donors, and (B) RIBA-2 and cDNA-PCR-negative donors. The look-back comprised 214 blood products from group A donors and 278 from group B. RESULTS: Of 211 recipients of group A components, 66 (31.3%) were available for

Recommendations for implementing patient blood management-an updated modified Delphi consensus from a multidisciplinary expert panel in Hong Kong.

In 2020, the Hong Kong Society of Clinical Blood Management (HKSCBM) established a consensus statement on the implementation of patient blood management (PBM). Based on recent evidence on PBM initiatives and practices, the HKSCBM updated their consensus statements. HKSCBM convened a multidisciplinary panel of 13 experts, who formulated discussion questions across three PBM pillars: (1) optimising patients' red blood cell mass and improving anaemia management; (2) minimising perioperative blood loss; and (3) rationalising the use of blood and blood components. Using the modified Delphi method,

Blood component therapy in open heart surgery.

Extensive bleeding still remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing surgery despite the recent achievements in our understanding of hemostasis and availability of modern blood component therapy. In some surgical patients abnormally prolonged operative bleeding due to thrombocytopenia or thrombocytopathia may be corrected by the infusion of platelet concentrates. Evaluation of the requests for platelet transfusion therapy to prevent or to stop excessive thrombocytopenic bleeding should be based on clinical and laboratory data, underlying disease and availability of

The Role and Research Progress of Mitochondria in Long-Term Cold-Stored Platelets.

Platelets, crucial components of blood, play a vital role in hemostasis and clinical treatments. However, current platelet storage methods at 22 ± 2°C face significant limitations, including a short shelf life (5-7 days), high risk of bacterial contamination, and progressive accumulation of metabolites such as lactic acid during prolonged storage. These issues impair transfusion efficacy and severely restrict the clinical utility of platelets. In contrast, cold storage at 4°C offers potential advantages: it extends platelet shelf life, reduces bacterial contamination risks, minimizes metabolit

Socio-demographic characteristics of Danish blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is an essential component of a modern healthcare system. Because knowledge about blood donor demography may inform the design of strategies for donor recruitment and retention, we used nationwide registers to characterize the entire population of blood donors in Denmark in 2010. METHODS: The study population comprised all Danes in the age range eligible for blood donation (N = 3,236,753) at the end of 2010. From the Scandinavian Donations and Transfusions (SCANDAT) register, we identified 174,523 persons who donated blood in Danish blood banks at least once in 20

Platelet number and function alterations in preclinical models of sterile inflammation and sepsis patients: implications in the pathophysiology and treatment of inflammation.

Platelets are the blood cells in charge of maintaining the body hemostasis, recognising the damaged vessel wall, and providing the appropriate cellular surface for the coagulation cascade to act locally. Additionally, platelets are active immunomodulators. At the crossroads of hemostasis and inflammation, platelets may exert either beneficial actions or participate in pathological manifestations, and have been associated with the prothrombotic nature of multi-organ failure in systemic inflammation. Platelet number alterations have been reported in septis, and platelet transfusions are given to

Impact of peri-transplant RBC transfusion and ABO incompatibility on acute graft-versus-host disease in pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients.

It is well known that stem cell transplantation is curative for many diseases; however, graft versus host disease (GVHD), which is a common posttransplant complication, has still a substantial place among the causes of transplant-related morbidity and mortality. The association between ABO incompatibility and GVHD is controversial. There is also limited available data about the association between blood component transfusions during the peritransplant period and GVHD development in the pediatric setting. Hence, we retrospectively evaluated both the impact of ABO-mismatch and transfusions of RB…

Receipt of RhD-positive whole blood for life-threatening bleeding in female children: A survey in alloimmunized mothers regarding minimum acceptable survival benefit relative to risk of maternal alloimmunization to anti-D.

BACKGROUND: Low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) for treatment of hemorrhagic shock sometimes necessitates transfusion of RhD-positive units due to short supply of RhD-negative LTOWB. Practitioners must choose between using RhD-positive LTOWB when RhD-negative is unavailable against the risk to a female of childbearing potential of becoming RhD-alloimmunized, risking hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) in future children, or using component therapy with RhD-negative red cells. This survey asked females with a history of red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization about their risk tole

An innovative intervention for the prevention of vaso-occlusive episodes in sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by a mutation in the beta-globin gene resulting in abnormal hemoglobin S (HgbS). The significant sequela of SCD include anemia and recurrent vaso-occlusive episodes (VOEs) which may effectuate patients to receive chronic blood transfusions. Current pharmacotherapy options for SCD include hydroxyurea, voxelotor, Lglutamine, and crizanlizumab. Simple and exchange transfusions are often utilized as prophylaxis to prevent emergency department (ED)/urgent care (UC) visits or hospitalizations from VOEs by reducing the level of sickled red blood

Impact of Intraoperative Blood Transfusion on Cerebral Injury in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Congenital Septal Heart Defect Surgery.

Background: The components of donor blood themselves have the potential to initiate a systemic inflammatory response and exacerbate neuroinflammation, resulting in subsequent cerebral injury. The aim of this study was to establish the role of transfusion in the development of cerebral injury during the correction of congenital heart defects in children. Material and Methods: A total of 78 patients aged from 1 to 78 months, with body weights ranging from 3.3 to 21.5 kg, were investigated. Biomarkers of cerebral injury and systemic inflammatory response were studied at three time points. First:

Red cells and gelatin as the core of a unified program for the national procurement of blood components and derivatives. Prediction, performance, and impact on supply of albumin and factor VIII.

The use of a gelatin plasma substitute as an integral part of a unified national program for the procurement of blood components and derivatives paves the way for the extensive use of red cell concentrates in the treatment of hemorrhage, the plasma from the original donations being partly diverted to the fractionation program of a national transfusion service. We estimated the potential of such a system paced by the demand for red cells and predicted that the use of 20% of fresh whole blood and 80% concentrates would not increase the demand for albumin, the yield of which would suffice to cove
