Mosquito-borne diseases pose some of the greatest challenges in public health, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Efforts to control these diseases have been underpinned by a theoretical framework developed for malaria by Ross and Macdonald, including models, metrics for measuring transmission, and theory of control that identifies key vulnerabilities in the transmission cycle. That framework, especially Macdonald's formula for R0 and its entomological derivative, vectorial capacity, are now used to study dynamics and design interventions for many mosquito-borne dise

Caprine piroplasmosis is caused by various species belonging to Babesia and Theileria genera and it is a major pathological condition affecting goats globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, including Türkiye. In endemic areas, these infections cause huge losses and are major threat to the sustainability of goat farming. Despite their impact, data on the molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of these pathogens in Türkiye remain limited. This study aimed to determine the molecular prevalence of caprine piroplasm agents in 400 goats sampled from nine provinces of Southeas

BACKGROUND: Flavivirus infections pose a significant global health burden, highlighting the need for safe and effective vaccination strategies. Co-administration of different vaccines, including licensed flavivirus vaccines, is commonly practiced providing protection against multiple pathogens while also saving time and reducing visits to healthcare units. However, how co-administration of different flavivirus vaccines de facto affects immunogenicity, particularly with respect to T cell responses, is only partially understood.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Antigen-specific T cell responses were asses

Urbanization of natural areas is considered one of the causes of the current apparent emergence of infectious diseases. Carnivores are among the species that adapt well to urban and periurban environments, facilitating cross-species disease transmission with domestic dogs and cats, and potentially with their owners. The prevalence of vector-borne pathogens (VBP) of zoonotic and veterinary interest was studied in sympatric wild and domestic carnivores into Barcelona Metropolitan Area (NE Spain). Blood or spleen samples from 130 animals, including 34 common genets (Genetta genetta), 12 red foxes

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is transmitted to vertebrates by taiga or forest ticks through bites, inducing disease of variable severity. The reasons underlying these differences in the severity of the disease are unknown. In order to identify genetic factors affecting the pathogenicity of virus strains, we have sequenced and compared the complete genomes of 34 Far-Eastern subtype (FE) TBEV strains isolated from patients with different disease severity (Primorye, the Russian Far East). We analyzed the complete genomes of 11 human pathogenic strains isolated from the brains of dead pati

This year's 2018 Named Series on blood-brain interfaces highlights the importance of brain barriers as mediators of neuroimmune communication and regulators of neurological function. The term "brain interfaces" reflects our growing understanding that brain barriers such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB) are not only gatekeepers, but facilitators of bidirectional communication between the brain and periphery. There is also an emerging appreciation that CNS sites that are exposed to blood-borne immune molecules and cells, such as the leptomeninges and circumventricul

BACKGROUND: Mosquito feeding behavior and habitat preferences strongly influence arbovirus transmission, particularly for viruses where swine serve as amplifying hosts. The high density of pigs in commercial operations poses a potential risk for severe outbreaks if mosquito-borne pathogens were to be introduced. This study characterizes habitat preferences and feeding behavior of mosquito species on commercial swine farms in the USA.
METHODS: Overall, ten farms (five sow and five wean-to-market [WTM] farms) were sampled biweekly from June to October 2024. At each farm, resting mosquitoes were

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquito-borne viruses including Zika (ZIKV), dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) have emerged and re-emerged globally, resulting in an elevated burden of human disease. Aedes aegypti is found worldwide in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate areas. The characterization of mosquito blood meals is essential to understand the transmission dynamics of mosquito-vectored pathogens.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we report Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus host feeding patterns and arbovirus transmission in Northern Mexico using a metaba

The pivotal role of amphibians in food webs and their value as indicators of disequilibrium in ecosystem health have long been recognized by wildlife biologists. However, massive pathogen-induced declines in global amphibian populations reported during the last 30 years served to alert the scientific community that knowledge of amphibian disease ecology, including parasitic and vector-borne conditions, was and remains incipient. Herein, we report the detection of a Rickettsia bacterium infecting larvae of the argasid tick Ornithodoros faccinii, collected from the toad Rhinella ornata, in South

BACKGROUND: Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus) is a highly pathogenic mosquito-borne zoonosis that is responsible for occasional outbreaks of severe disease in humans and equines, resulting in high mortality and neurological impairment in most survivors. In the past, human disease outbreaks in the northeastern U.S. have occurred intermittently with no apparent pattern; however, during the last decade we have witnessed recurring annual emergence where EEE virus activity had been historically rare, and expansion into northern New England where the virus had been pr

Rickettsia felis is an emerging flea-borne spotted fever pathogen that causes febrile illness in humans. In Vietnam, R. felis was detected in hospitalized patients, but there is no information on its presence in the Vietnamese community. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the presence of R. felis in humans of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. A total of 158 blood and 213 serum samples were subjected to PCR and IFAT, respectively, to detect the presence of R. felis DNA and antibodies against R. felis. PCR assays detected R. felis DNA in four out of 158 blood samples, accounting for a

During hematogenously disseminated candidiasis, blood borne fungi must invade the endothelial cells that line the blood vessels to infect the deep tissues. Although Candida albicans, which forms hyphae, readily invades endothelial cells, other medically important species of Candida are poorly invasive in standard in vitro assays and have low virulence in immunocompetent mouse models of disseminated infection. Here, we show that Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida krusei can bind to vitronectin and high molecular weight kininogen present in human serum. Actin

Mosaic Variegated Aneuploidy Syndrome (MVA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by mosaic aneuploidies involving multiple chromosomes and tissues. Affected individuals typically present with severe intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, developmental delay and predisposition to cancer and epilepsy. Three genes, BUB1B, CEP57 and TRIP13, are involved in this syndrome. Only 7 patients carrying pathogenic variants in CEP57 are reported to date. Here we report two adult brothers born to Moroccan related parents, who presented with intrauter

Ehrlichia chaffeensis, etiologic agent of human ehrlichiosis, and Rickettsia rickettsii, etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), are both tick-borne agents that cause nonspecific symptoms that may be indistinguishable from each other early in the course of infection. E. canis is a canine pathogen closely related to E. chaffeensis and was initially suspected of being the causative agent of human ehrlichiosis. If a febrile illness is reported, after tick exposure, neither ehrlichiosis nor RMSF can be immediately ruled out. When attempts are made to isolate the agent from blood, a

BACKGROUND: Transmission of bloodborne pathogens due to breaches in infection control is becoming increasingly recognized as greater emphasis is placed on reducing health care-associated infections. Two women, aged 60 and 77 years, were diagnosed with acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection; both received chemotherapy at the same physician's office. Due to suspicion of health care-associated HBV transmission, a multidisciplinary team initiated an investigation of the hematology-oncology office practice.
METHODS: We performed an onsite inspection and environmental assessment, staff interviews,

A retrospective review of all exposure injuries affecting members of the operative care line at a single university hospital between January 2000 and December 2007 was performed. A questionnaire survey on current status of adherence to barrier precautions was also completed by 164 staff members. Of 136 exposure injuries, 87 (64.0%) were in surgeons, and 49 (36.0%) were in scrub nurses. Surgeons were most commonly injured during suturing (49, 56%), followed by "handing over sharps" (7, 8%), whereas scrub nurses were most commonly injured during "counting and sorting of sharps" (15, 41%), follow
