Using Azadirachta indica protein hydrolysate as a plant protein in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) diet: Effects on the growth, economic efficiency, antioxidant-immune response and resistance to Streptococcus agalactiae.

A feeding trial for 90 days was conducted on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (average weight: 25.50 ± 0.05 g) to evaluate the effect of dietary inclusion of Azadirachta indica seed protein hydrolysate (AIPH). The evaluation included the impact on the growth metrics, economic efficiency, antioxidant potential, hemato-biochemical indices, immune response, and histological architectures. A total of 250 fish were randomly distributed in five treatments (n = 50) and received diets included with five levels of AIPH (%): 0 (control diet, AIPH0), 2 (AIPH2), 4 (AIPH4), 6 (AIPH6) or 8 (AIPH8), wher

Exploring the relevance and extent of small airways dysfunction in asthma (ATLANTIS): baseline data from a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Small airways dysfunction (SAD) is well recognised in asthma, yet its role in the severity and control of asthma is unclear. This study aimed to assess which combination of biomarkers, physiological tests, and imaging markers best measure the presence and extent of SAD in patients with asthma. METHODS: In this baseline assessment of a multinational prospective cohort study (the Assessment of Small Airways Involvement in Asthma [ATLANTIS] study), we recruited participants with and without asthma (defined as Global Initiative for Asthma severity stages 1-5) from general practices, t

Deep learning-based quantitative visualization and measurement of extraperitoneal hematoma volumes in patients with pelvic fractures: Potential role in personalized forecasting and decision support.

INTRODUCTION: Admission computed tomography (CT) is a widely used diagnostic tool for patients with pelvic fractures. In this pilot study, we hypothesized that pelvic hematoma volumes derived using a rapid automated deep learning-based quantitative visualization and measurement algorithm predict interventions and outcomes including (a) need for angioembolization (AE), pelvic packing (PP), or massive transfusion (MT), and (b) in-hospital mortality. METHODS: We performed a single-institution retrospective analysis of 253 patients with bleeding pelvic fractures who underwent admission abdominope

Effects of external wrapping and increased blood flow on atrophy of the baboon iliac artery.

OBJECTIVE: Increased blood flow causes neointimal atrophy, whereas relief of wall tension with an external wrap causes arterial medial atrophy. To study the effects of blood flow and wall tension separately and together, we applied tight or loose wraps on high-flow or normal-flow iliac arteries in baboons. METHOD: Baboon external iliac arteries were wrapped with loose-fitting and tight-fitting expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), leaving part unwrapped. A downstream arteriovenous fistula was constructed on one side to increase blood flow approximately twofold. The arteries were perfusion

Noncholesterol sterols.

Although most of us are more or less familiar with the term "cholesterol", the world of sterols is far more complicated and interesting. Apart from cholesterol, many non-cholesterol sterols can be found in human plasma and these sterols serve many important functions in human organism. They are either derived from endogenous biosynthesis of cholesterol or they come from dietary sources (phytosterols). The sole cholesterol molecule is used for keeping our cell membranes fit, for signalization purposes as well as a precursor for bile acids and steroid hormones. The compounds prior to cholesterol

Real-time breath analysis for COPD risk assessment in smokers using a ZnO/SnO₂ heterojunction sensor integrated with support vector machine.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressively debilitating and life-threatening respiratory condition that has long been attributed to exposure to airborne toxic substances like carbon monoxide (CO), a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress, especially in smoking individuals. To address the need for a real-time and non-invasive method that can detect this life-threatening condition, a wearable diagnostic device is developed in this work based on a Z/S heterostructure thin-film gas sensor that can detect exhaled CO at a temperature as low as 37 °C. This gas sensor was prepared

Rescue Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Aspiration-Induced Refractory Hypoxaemia Before Non-Deferrable Abdominal Surgery: A Case Report.

Background: Pulmonary aspiration during induction of anaesthesia may lead to rapidly progressive, life-threatening hypoxaemic respiratory failure. This poses a particular challenge when urgent surgery cannot be deferred. Case Presentation: A 33-year-old man required urgent relaparotomy for mesenteric venous thrombosis and multifocal bowel gangrene after blunt abdominal trauma. During rapid-sequence induction, he aspirated approximately 230 mL of mixed liquid gastric contents and solid food particles. Despite immediate suctioning, three therapeutic bronchoscopies, volume-controlled ventilation

Early Evidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Obscured by Race-Specific Prediction Equations.

Rationale: The identification of early chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is essential to appropriately counsel patients regarding smoking cessation, provide symptomatic treatment, and eventually develop disease-modifying treatments. Disease severity in COPD is defined using race-specific spirometry equations. These may disadvantage non-White individuals in diagnosis and care. Objectives: Determine the impact of race-specific equations on African American (AA) versus non-Hispanic White individuals. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses of the COPDGene (Genetic Epidemiology of Chronic Obs

Parasitic infections, hematological and biochemical parameters suggest appropriate health status of wild coati populations in anthropic Atlantic Forest remnants.

Coatis are hosts of a great diversity of parasites, that due to anthropic pressures in forest fragments, like changes in landscapes and ecosystems, can influence the dynamics and physiological responses to those parasite infections, affecting the animal's health and fitness. This is the first study about health parameters and parasitic infections of wild coati (Nasua nasua) populations in the Atlantic Forest (Pernambuco Center of Endemism). The following hypotheses were evaluated: (i) infections and co-infections by gastrointestinal parasites and ectoparasites can generate changes in the healt
