Rate of weight loss can be predicted by patient characteristics and intervention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Although dietary weight-loss counseling usually employs a 500 to 1,000 kcal/day energy deficit to induce weight loss of 0.5 to 1 kg/week, this rate of weight loss is rarely achieved in research settings. Biological factors, such as changes in metabolic rate, are partly responsible, but would only account for a small deviation from expected weight loss. There must be other factors, behavioral or related to study design and implementation, that affect the rate of weight loss observed. OBJECTIVE: To examine factors that influence the rate of weight loss obtained in clinical studies.

The effect of polyene phosphatidyl choline intervention on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and related mechanism.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has similar clinical pathological changes to alcoholic hepatitis. It shows increased incidence and young trend year by year. Polyene phosphatidyl choline (PPC) is widely used in clinic for liver disease treatment. The effect and mechanism of PPC on NASH have not been fully elucidated. Thirty healthy male Wistar rats were randomly equally divided into control, NASH group, and PPC group. NASH model was established by high fat diet. PPC was intraperitoneal injected to NASH rat from the second week at 80 mg/kg·d for three weeks. Body weight, liver weight index,

Acute Activity Urges Predict Lower Early Weight Gain During Inpatient Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa.

Early weight gain is a primary goal in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) and associated with more favorable discharge weights and clinical outcomes. Activity urges, that is, a motivational state to engage in activity, have been suspected to delay early weight gain, but their prognostic role remains barely explored. Here, we investigated whether acute (state-like) activity urges at treatment onset would predict within-person weight gain in patients with AN during the initial 2 weeks of inpatient treatment. Adults with AN from an inpatient unit (N = 53) completed an activity urges measure a

The relation between body size perception and change in body mass index over 13 years: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

The authors assessed associations of body size perception and weight change over 13 years in black men and women and white men and women from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study (1992-2005). The perceptions of self and ideal body size were measured by using the Stunkard 9-figure scale at the year 7 examination (1992-1993). Figures were classified into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. Self-ideal discrepancy yielded 4 body size satisfaction categories. Body mass index (BMI) (measured at years 7, 10, 15, and 20) was the dependent variable in gende

Dietary experiences and support needs of women who gain weight following chemotherapy for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Weight gain is common but poorly understood in women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. Overweight and obesity are associated with other co-morbidities, reduced self-esteem and an increased risk of cancer recurrence. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences, dietary information and support needs of women who gain weight during chemotherapy treatment. METHODS: This study used a qualitative approach to explore the experiences of women from three Melbourne breast cancer clinics. Those who gained weight during the period of enrolment in a cohort study of chemothera

Compensatory changes in energy balance during dapagliflozin treatment in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial (ENERGIZE)-study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are effective blood-glucose-lowering medications with beneficial effects on body weight in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, observed weight loss is less than that predicted from quantified glycosuria, suggesting a compensatory increase in energy intake or a decrease in energy expenditure. Studies using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) have suggested most body weight change is due to loss of adipose tissue, but organ-specific changes in fat content (eg, liver, skeletal muscle) have not been determined.

Triaryl phosphate poisoning in cattle.

Clinical signs, pathologic changes and biochemical changes occurred in cattle with natural and experimental triaryl phosphate poisoning. Natural poisoning was caused by triaryl phosphates escaping from a gas pipeline compressor station. The clinical signs were posterior motor paralysis, dyspnea, diarrhea and agalactia. Experimental doses of 1/2-1 gm/kg body weight of these organophosphate compounds caused depression of cholinesterase and axonal degeneration in the spinal cord.

Ghrelin and the short- and long-term regulation of appetite and body weight.

Ghrelin, an acylated upper gastrointestinal peptide, is the only known orexigenic hormone. Considerable evidence implicates ghrelin in mealtime hunger and meal initiation. Circulating levels decrease with feeding and increase before meals, achieving concentrations sufficient to stimulate hunger and food intake. Preprandial ghrelin surges occur before every meal on various fixed feeding schedules and also among individuals initiating meals voluntarily without time- or food-related cues. Ghrelin injections stimulate food intake rapidly and transiently, primarily by increasing appetitive feeding

Changes in HbA1c levels and body mass index after successful decompression surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and lumbar spinal stenosis: results of a 2-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) can hinder a patient's physical activity, which in turn can impair glucose tolerance and body weight regulation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2). Therefore, successful lumbar surgery could facilitate glycemic control and body weight regulation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of postoperative improvement in physical activity on body mass index (BMI) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level in patients with LSS and DM-2 over a 2-year follow-up period. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal observational study. PATIENT

The effects of ovarian hormones and emotional eating on changes in weight preoccupation across the menstrual cycle.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that fluctuations in ovarian hormones (i.e., estradiol and progesterone) predict the changes in binge eating and emotional eating across the menstrual cycle. However, the extent to which other eating disorder symptoms fluctuate across the menstrual cycle and are influenced by ovarian hormones remains largely unknown. This study sought to examine whether the levels of weight preoccupation vary across the menstrual cycle and whether the changes in ovarian hormones and/or other factors (i.e., emotional eating and negative affect) account for menstrual cycle

Low pretransplant bone-mineral density and rapid bone loss do not increase risk for avascular osteonecrosis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Avascular osteonecrosis (AVN) is a serious complication of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Graft-versus-host disease and its treatment with steroids are the main risk factors; underlying diagnosis, age and gender are further risk factors. It has been speculated that low baseline bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with AVN posttransplant. Furthermore, rapid bone loss with consecutive microarchitectural changes might prone patients to AVN. METHODS: In a single-center prospective cohort study, 255 patients undergoing allogeneic SCT for CML, AML, MDS, and ALL were fo

Early undernutrition leads to long-lasting reductions in body weight and adiposity whereas increased intake increases cardiac fibrosis in male rats.

Previous studies suggest that both overfeeding and undernutrition during development increase the risk of obesity and hypertension in adulthood. In this study, we examined both short- (24 d) and long- (16 wk) term effects of early postnatal over- and underfeeding in rats on body weight, body composition, plasma hormones, adiposity markers, and hypothalamic neuropeptide Y content. Cardiovascular changes were also examined by measuring blood pressure and cardiac fibrosis. Rats raised in litters of 3, 12, or 18 pups per mother were used to model early onset overfeeding, control, and underfeeding,

Changes in anthropometry in full-term breastfed newborns and associated factors for the first month.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to assess the changes and associated factors in newborn anthropometry in the first month for full-term, healthy, and exclusive-breastfed infants. METHODS: Neonatal anthropometric measurements were taken on day 5, day 15, and day 30 after delivery. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) analyzed the changes. RESULTS: From 169 mother-newborn pairs, GEE showed that weight gain during the first month was influenced by maternal body mass index (BMI), delivery type, birth weight, and jaundice after adjusting confounding factors (p < .05). The neonatal length was affected by the s

Weight Suppression But Not Symptom Improvement Predicts Weight Gain During Inpatient Treatment for Bulimia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Fear of gaining weight is a common obstacle to seeking treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN). We investigated changes in body mass index (BMI) during inpatient treatment for BN in relation to treatment outcome and weight suppression (WS). METHODS: Female inpatients of a specialized eating disorders clinic were grouped as deteriorated/unchanged, reliably improved, and clinically significantly improved based on Eating Disorder Inventory-2 scores. Repeated measures ANOVA was employed to examine changes in BMI between admission and discharge depending on treatment outcome and WS. RESULTS
