Pattern of bone resorption in vertically fractured, endodontically treated teeth.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical pattern of alveolar bone resorption associated with vertically fractured, endodontically treated teeth in correlation to clinical symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The pattern of bone resorption was evaluated in 66 maxillary premolars, 13 mandibular premolars, and 31 mesial roots of mandibular molars extracted during an 18-month period because of vertical root fractures. Type and duration of symptoms were recorded and correlated to the pattern of bone resorption. RESULTS: A V-shaped pattern osseous defect (dehiscence) was typical (91%) to the buccal plate rath

End-plate lesions of the lumbar spine.

It has been suggested that the pattern of development and attrition of blood vessels and notochord remnants leaves congenitally weak points in the cartilage disc plates. There is strong presumptive evidence that nuclear prolapse can take place through these weak spots in the cartilage plates to form Schmorl's nodes. It has been postulated that the development of Schmorl's nodes may also lead to anomalies of the vasculature in the end-plates, which may lead to further end-plate lesions. In the present study, we have examined lumbar intervertebral discs and vertebrae from eight specimens with Sc

[Treatment of macrodactyly with epiphyseal plate excision in growth retardation].

Macrodactyly, the overgrowth of one or more fingers or toes, is a comparatively rare congenital deformity. The enlargement includes skin, subcutaneous tissue, nerve, joint and bone. The bony involvement is usually limited to phalanges and the metacarpus is rarely involved. Since 1979, 10 cases have been seen in our hospital. Among them, there were 6 cases whose giant fingers or toes were treated with epiphyseal plates removing. The postoperative results (the longest follow-up period was 9 years) were satisfying. The growth of fingers or toes was completely stopped but in one case whose toes be

Infected Nonunion of the Distal Femur in the Elderly with Bone Loss: Case Report and Treatment Options.

The management of infected nonunion associated with bone loss in long bones is both a time-consuming and challenging procedure for the orthopedic and trauma surgeon. In this paper, we present the case of a 75-year-old woman with infected nonunion of the distal femur associated with bone loss after plate osteosynthesis for a distal femur fracture. The patient was referred for nonunion of the distal femur after plate fixation (nonlocking "classic" plate) and was treated with a locking compression plate (LCP) and autologous cancellous bone transplant. During the follow-up, the patient was ambulat

Some observations on the development of the long bones of ratite birds.

Observations were made on the long bones of 16 young ratite birds (10 rheas, 3 emus and 3 ostriches), from 1-day-old to 12 weeks of age. At hatching all long bones contained large cartilaginous cones which were continuous with the growth plates, and an osseous cortex. At one week of age ossification had commenced on the periphery of these embryonic cones and in some bones the cones had become separated from the growth plates. At 3 weeks of age the embryonic cones of cartilage were still present in the proximal and distal tibio-tarsi and narrow cartilaginous bridges connected the cones to the g

Mechanism of shortened bones in mucopolysaccharidosis VII.

Mucopolysaccharidosis VII (MPS VII) is a lysosomal storage disease in which deficiency in beta-glucuronidase results in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) accumulation in and around cells, causing shortened long bones through mechanisms that remain largely unclear. We demonstrate here that MPS VII mice accumulate massive amounts of the GAG chondroitin-4-sulfate (C4S) in their growth plates, the cartilaginous region near the ends of long bones responsible for growth. MPS VII mice also have only 60% of the normal number of chondrocytes in the growth plate and 55% of normal chondrocyte proliferation at 3wee

A role for subchondral bone changes in the process of osteoarthritis; a micro-CT study of two canine models.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates changes in peri-articular bone in two canine models for osteoarthritis: the groove model and the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model. METHODS: Evaluation was performed at 10 and 20 weeks post-surgery and in addition a 3-weeks time point was studied for the groove model. Cartilage was analysed, and architecture of the subchondral plate and trabecular bone of epiphyses was quantified using micro-CT. RESULTS: At 10 and 20 weeks cartilage histology and biochemistry demonstrated characteristic features of osteoarthritis in both models (very mild ch

Idiopathic focal calvarial thinning: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Calvarial bone thinning is a rare clinical entity, with only several cases reported (including Gorham-Stout disease), but the cause is often unknown. Here, we report such a case of unilateral calvarial thinning with an unknown cause. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 77-year-old woman undergoing imaging examination for unruptured cerebral aneurysms for the past several years noticed a progressive cranial deformity. Computed tomography revealed progressive thinning of the right parietal bone and cranial deformity but laboratory tests showed no causative findings. A cranioplasty was performed to

Effects of treadmill running with different intensity on rat subchondral bone.

Subchondral bone (SB) is recognized as a key factor in normal joint protection, not only does it provide a shock absorbing and supportive function for the cartilage, but it may also be important for cartilage metabolism. Mechanical loading is considered to be a critical regulator of skeletal homeostasis, including bone and cartilage. It is suggested that both cartilage and bone may respond to mechanical loading in an intensity-dependent manner. In this report, we have discovered that the subchondral plate became thicker with higher bone mineral density (BMD) and lower porosity, while trabecula

Supplemental Internal Wire Suspension in Orthognathic Surgery Fixation.

Internal wire suspensions were previously used in the management of maxillary trauma and orthognathic surgery, but currently the gold standard is rigid internal fixation with bone plates and screws. The authors report a case of bimaxillary osteotomy in a skeletal class III patient where a supplemental circum-zygomatic-mandibular suspension was done to stabilize the maxilla because of the instability after rigid internal fixation due to poor bone thickness.

Chondroblastoma of the Occipital Bone With Atypical Genetic Markers: A Case Report.

Chondroblastoma is a rare bone tumor, most often found in epiphyseal plates of long bones. It has infrequently been reported in the skull, most often in the temporal bone. We present a case of chondroblastoma of the occipital bone in a pediatric patient presenting with a bony protuberance of the occiput and imaging consistent with obstructive hydrocephalus, which persisted even after removal of the obstructing tumor. Pathological examination demonstrated that this unusually placed tumor also lacked the classic genetic markers typically associated with chondroblastoma.

Anatomical Thin Titanium Mesh Plate Structural Optimization for Zygomatic-Maxillary Complex Fracture under Fatigue Testing.

This study performs a structural optimization of anatomical thin titanium mesh (ATTM) plate and optimal designed ATTM plate fabricated using additive manufacturing (AM) to verify its stabilization under fatigue testing. Finite element (FE) analysis was used to simulate the structural bending resistance of a regular ATTM plate. The Taguchi method was employed to identify the significance of each design factor in controlling the deflection and determine an optimal combination of designed factors. The optimal designed ATTM plate with patient-matched facial contour was fabricated using AM and appl

Retinoid-impregnated nanoparticles enable control of bone growth by site-specific modulation of endochondral ossification in mice.

UNLABELLED: Growth-plate (GP) injures in limbs and other sites can impair GP function and cause deceleration of bone growth, leading to progressive bone lengthening imbalance, deformities and/or physical discomfort, decreased motion and pain. At present, surgical interventions are the only means available to correct these conditions by suppressing the GP activity in the unaffected limb and/or other bones in the ipsilateral region. Here, we aimed to develop a pharmacologic treatment of GP growth imbalance that involves local application of nanoparticles-based controlled release of a selective r

Fixation of the craniofacial skeleton with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and its effects on histotoxicity and healing.

Butyl-2-cyanoacrylate is an easily applied, biocompatible, bioresorbable polymer glue that provides an alternative to conventional rigid fixation techniques. Our aim was to determine if cyanoacrylate fixation of the bone flap in a rabbit craniotomy model provides the healing and strength afforded by plate and screw fixation. We also investigated the inflammatory responses of adjacent tissues including the scalp, cranium, and brain. A unilateral parietal bone flap was elevated in 33 adult New Zealand rabbits. The bone was fixed in position with cyanoacrylate (n = 13), fixed with a microplate an

Association of Gap Healing With Angle of Correction After Opening-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy Without Bone Grafting.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) without bone grafting has outcomes that are similar to or even better than those of OWHTO with bone grafting, especially after use of a locking plate. However, a consensus on managing the gap after OWHTO has not been established. PURPOSE: To determine the degree of gap healing achieved without bone grafting, the factors associated with gap healing, and whether additional gap healing would be obtained after plate removal. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: This retrospective study inclu

Mixing implants of differing metallic composition in the treatment of upper-extremity fractures.

Mixing implants with differing metallic compositions has been avoided for fear of galvanic corrosion and subsequent failure of the implants and of bone healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate upper-extremity fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation with metallic implants that differed in metallic composition placed on the same bone. The authors studied the effects of using both stainless steel and titanium implants on fracture healing, implant failure, and other complications associated with this method of fixation. Their hypothesis was that combining these metals

Development and characterization of a predictive microCT-based non-union model in Fischer F344 rats.

INTRODUCTION: Non-unions remain a clinical problem and are characterised by the failure to heal after a defined period of time. Current preclinical non-union models apply a wide variety of techniques to diminish intrinsic healing potential deviating from the clinical situation. The aim of this study was to develop and characterise a non-union model in rats using internal plate fixation without the need for additional healing insults, whereby bone healing can be longitudinally assessed using microCT. It was hypothesized that healing/non-unions can be accurately predicted at early time points by
