[Meningioma with a peritumoral abscess].

The paper presents a rare case of meningioma associated with peritumoral abscess formed in a 63-year-old female undergone right nephrectomy for abscessed pyelonephritis and drainage of gluteal abscesses 3 months before admission. Brain computed tomography revealed a left frontotemporal heterogeneous mass lesion with margin contrast accumulation. At surgery, convexity meningioma with peritumoral abscess was totally removed. Hematogenous spread of Staphylococcus aureus is most likely to be responsible for peritumoral abscess. The paper also gives a review of literature and a brief account of the

Pott's puffy tumor in a 12-year-old boy.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare complication of sinusitis characterized by subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital before it causes intracranial complications such as subdural empyema or brain abscess. Herein we describe the case of a 12-year-old patient who developed preseptal cellulitis and PPT, and was successfully treated with abscess drainage, sinus surgery and long-term antibiotic therapy.

Cerebral Nocardiosis in a patient with Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinaemia.

Nocardiosis is caused by nocardia species, a Gram positive aerobic filamentous bacillus. It is ubiquitous in the environment and often presents as pulmonary disease in more than 70% of patients.1 Dissemination of the disease may manifest as brain abscesses, and is reported to account for approximately 2% of all brain abscesses.2,3 We present a case of cerebral nocardiosis in a patient with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia, previously unreported in the literature.

[Drainage of cerebral and cerebellar abscesses with "cigar"-shape draining tampon].

The treatment was given to 95 patients aged 5 to 63 years with temporal (n = 86) and cerebellar abscesses (n = 9). Most of the patients were hospitalized after home treatment with antibiotics which complicated the diagnosis because of atypical course of the disease induced by them. The "cigar" tampon was used for draining brain abscess. The cover of the tampon was made not of the glove rubber but of a baby's rubber dummy and a rubber pipette cap. Holes were cut in the walls of the latter and gauze turundas inserted. The results of such manipulation were favourable. Therefore, it is recommended…

[Headaches and aphasia in an immunocompromised patient].

We report the case of a 81-year-old, immunocompromised Patient, admitted to our hospital with new-onset headaches and word-finding difficulties. The MRI of the brain revealed a temporal mass on the left with marginal contrast-enhancement. During the next days Listeria monocytogenes grew in the bloodcultures so that the diagnosis of a brain-abscess caused by Listeria was established. Due to the localisation, surgical drainage of the abscess was not possible, so that a prolonged antibiotic therapy lasting over 4.5 months was initiated. The MRI after therapy demonstrated no abscess persistence. L

Advantage of computerized tomography scan. Diagnosis of an otogenic cerebellar abscess.

Computerized axial tomography with contrast enhancement is very useful for the diagnosis of brain abscesses. This fact is illustrated by a case report of a cerebellar abscess secondary to chronic mastoiditis with cholesteatoma.

Cardiac arrest: an unusual side-effect of intravenous ornidazole.

Nitroimidazoles have been used alone or in combination with other antibacterial agents in the treatment of brain abscess. They are associated with certain adverse reactions related primarily to the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. But, as far as we know, cardiac arrest due to ornidazole has not been reported in the literature. In this study, we presented a case in which cardiac arrest occurred as an unusual side-effect of intravenous ornidazole administered to a ten-year-old girl suffering from brain abscess.

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis.

Multiple phaeohyphomycotic brain abscesses caused by Cladosporium species occurred in a 55 year old woman. No immunological abnormality could be detected. The disease ran a protracted course for a total of 20 months before she died from sudden rupture of an abscess loculus into the ventricular system. Course was characterised by spontaneous remissions and relapses totally independent of adequate doses and prolonged regimes of all the three available anti-fungal chemotherapeutic agents, namely amphotericin B, flucytosine and ketoconazole. Three surgical procedures were carried out; and surgical…

Stereotactic Aspiration in Management of Rare Case of Tuberculous Cerebellar Abscess.

Tuberculous brain abscess is an extremely rare form of central nervous system tuberculosis. This lesion usually occurs in the supratentorial space. Cerebellar tubercular abscesses are rare. Most of these cases occur in immunocompromised patients. We report an immunocompetent individual with tuberculous abscess of the cerebellum and discuss the role of stereotactic aspiration in the management of these rare lesions.

A case of frontal lobe abscess as a complication of frontal sinus ossifying fibroma.

Sinonasal ossifying fibroma is a rare, slow-growing, benign bony tumour, frequently involving the maxilla and mandible in the head and neck region. Although it is known to be the second most frequent fibro-osseous tumour of paranasal sinus, to the best of our knowledge, ossifying fibroma of frontal sinus causing brain abscess has not been presented yet in the relevant literature. We present the clinical, pathological and radiological findings of ossifying fibroma of the frontal sinus associated with brain abscess.

Lung abscess: back for an encore?

The rise in incidence of lung abscess due to opportunistic organisms has reemphasized the need for early recognition and treatment. Opportun … Among the complications are progression to a chronic stage, empyema, massive hemoptysis, metastatic brain abscess, and bronchopleural fistula. Treatment of lung abscess is primarily medical, consisting of an appropriate antibiotic regimen and chest physical therapy. Surgery is reserved for unresponsive patients or those with complications.

Cerebral Abscess in Young Adult with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral abscesses are rare, potentially life-threatening entities that result from local spread or hematogenous dissemination to the brain. Prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment is key in lowering morbidity and preventing mortality associated with cerebral abscesses. Congenital heart diseases with right-to-left intracardiac shunts can be complicated by brain abscesses via paradoxical embolism of infected microthrombi. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by an underdeveloped left heart that uses intracardiac shunting to ach…

Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis presenting with intracranial spread along large sphenoidal emissary foramen.

A 13-year-old girl was admitted for headache, right periorbital swelling and erythema. CT imaging demonstrated right orbital preseptal cellulitis, severe pansinusitis and suspected epidural abscess. Brain MRI and sinus CT confirmed an epidural abscess in the right middle cranial fossa and a second extra-cranial abscess in the right infratemporal fossa along with large right sphenoidal emissary foramen. Drainage from sinus surgery confirmed allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. She was treated with prednisone and voriconazole.

Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii meningitis and cerebellar abscess: case report and therapeutic considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Brain abscess is defined as a suppurative collection resulting from hematogenous dissemination as an extension from otorhinolaryngologic infectious foci, or secondary to cranial trauma and neurosurgical procedures. Its evolution follows four histopathological stages, the most severe complication being intraventricular rupture, which is associated with extremely high mortality. Central nervous system infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR/XDR) Acinetobacter baumannii are rare but severe, significantly limiting therapeutic options due to the reduced penetration of the blood-…

[Cerebral and pulmonary nocardiosis to Nocardia abscessus in an immunocompetent Algerian patient].

Nocardial brain abscess is often occurring in immunocompromised patients. It is uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. Here, the authors describe a case of cerebral and pulmonary nocardiosis mimicking a metastatic tumor in an apparently health 40-year-old Algerian male. The patient presented multiple brain abscess revealed by inaugural epileptic seizure. He was afebrile and presented with left hemiparesis. Staging imaging showed a nodular lung lesion in the apical segment of the right lower lobe. The patient underwent double craniotomy for resection of the lesion. Culture of the resected spe…
