Application of stretchable strain sensors and an inertial measurement unit for simulative tension analysis of the calcaneofibular ligament in formalin-fixed cadavers.

BACKGROUND: The calcaneofibular ligament, a component of the lateral ligament complex of the ankle joint, plays an essential role in ankle-joint stability. To understand the mechanism of sprain-induced calcaneofibular ligament injury, the effect of ankle positions on calcaneofibular ligament tension needs to be ascertained. METHODS: We propose a convenient method that combines stretchable strain sensors and an inertial measurement unit for simulative tension analysis of the calcaneofibular ligament in formalin-fixed cadavers. The stretchable strain sensor was pre-stretched approximately 1.3 t…

The masseteric nerve for facial reanimation: Macroscopic and histomorphometric characteristics in 106 human cadavers and comparison of axonal ratio with recipient nerves.

Peripheral facial palsy causes severe impairments. Sufficient axonal load is critical for adequate functional outcomes in reanimation procedures. The aim of our study was to attain a better understanding of the anatomy of the masseteric nerve as a donor, in order to optimize neurotization procedures. Biopsies were obtained from 106 hemifaces of fresh frozen human cadavers. Histological cross-sections were fixed, stained with PPD, and digitized. Histomorphometry and a validated software-based axon quantification were conducted. Of the 154 evaluated branches, 74 specimens were of the main trunk …

A left circumflex aorta with a displaced thoracic duct in a 94-year-old male cadaver: a case report with discussion on embryology.

A left circumflex aorta (LCA) is an extremely rare variation of the thoracic aorta. It is distinguished by a retroesophageal descending aorta that subsequently travels down the right side of the thoracic vertebrae towards the aortic hiatus. Nonetheless, its embryological origin ought not to be overly generalised, but each case should be considered individually due to its unique vascular patterns. This study presents a description of a LCA in a 94-year-old male cadaver. The dissection revealed the descending aorta posteriorly from the trachea and oesophagus and then laterally on the right from …

What Are Practical Surgical Anatomic Landmarks and Distances from Relevant Neurologic Landmarks in Cadavers for the Posterior Approach in Shoulder Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Traditional total shoulder arthroplasty is performed through the deltopectoral approach and includes subscapularis release and repair. Subscapularis nonhealing or dysfunction may leave patients with persistent pain, impairment, and instability. Alternative approaches that spare the subscapularis include rotator interval and posterior shoulder approaches; however, to our knowledge, a cadaveric study describing pertinent surgical anatomy for a posterior shoulder approach regarding shoulder arthroplasty has not been performed. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the distances from impor…

Development of an Experimental Model for Studying the Nasosinusal and Skull Base Arterial and Venous Systems Using Iodinated Contrast and Latex in Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Cadaver dissection remains one of the most reliable and safest ways to study anatomy, whereas computed tomography angiography (CTA) is an essential technology for enabling students to become familiar with human anatomy and surgical planning. Thus, the convergence of both radiologic and anatomic information is important for surgical success, especially in regions of complex anatomy such as the nasosinusal and skull base regions. Here we propose an experimental model in formalinized cadaver heads consisting of intravascular injection of colored latex and iodinated contrast mixture, f…

Time- and temperature-dependent changes in cytochrome c oxidase activity and cyanide concentration in excised mice organs and mice cadavers.

Postmortem stability of cyanide biomarkers is often disputed. We assessed the time and temperature-dependent changes in cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity and cyanide concentration in various organs of mice succumbing to cyanide. Immediately after death, excised mice organs and mice cadavers were stored at room temperature (35°C ± 5°C) or in frozen storage (-20°C ± 2°C). At various times after death, CCO activity and cyanide concentrations were measured in excised mice organs or organs removed from mice cadavers. The study revealed that (i) measuring both the biomarkers in mice cadavers was m…
