The therapeutic effect of Kidney Tonifying principle and Bushen Jiangu (BSJG) capsule on postmenopausal osteoporosis (17 cases) was observed and compared with calcium treatment group (17 cases) in double-blind method. The result showed that 3 months after treatment with BSJG capsule, the symptoms of 92.85% patients were improved, and 6 months after treatment, the bone density (BD) of lumbar vertebra of 68.8% patients was significantly higher than that of before treatment, but the BD of control group was lower (P < 0.05). Colonic transit of radiolabelled capsules has been monitored in 18 healthy subjects using gamma scintigraphy. The capsules ranged in volume from 0.3-1.8 cm3 and in density from 0.7-1.5 gcm-3. The capsules were administered after an overnight fast and entered the colon, on average, 5 h after dosing. Transit rates through the proximal colon were independent of capsule density. We describe light and electron microscopic findings in three cases of pulmonary infection caused by capsule-deficient Cryptococcus neoformans (CDCN) and emphasize the value of the Fontana-Masson silver (FMS) stain in diagnosing cryptococcosis. The 6 day subrenal capsule (SRC) assay was performed in normal mice using 20 fresh human non-small cell lung cancers and nine fresh ovarian cancers. The ultrastructure of sensory nerve endings in the human knee joint capsule was studied. Three types of nerve endings were found: free nerve endings (FNE), Ruffini corpuscles and Pacini corpuscles. We examined 534 clinical isolates of Escherichia coli for sensitivity to rough lipopolysaccharide-specific and K1-specific phages. Twenty-eight percent of bacteremic isolates were sensitive to rough-specific phages. Forty-two percent of these strains, against only 20% of bacteremic isolates insensitive to rough-specific phages, had K1 capsule (P less than 0.001).
