Studies were undertaken to determine the efficacy of milbemycin oxime against the enteric adult stages of Trichinella spiralis and of albendazole against the muscle stage larvae in experimentally infected dogs and cats. To facilitate medical dissolution of uroliths in dogs and cats, urinary catheters may be used to retrieve urocystoliths for quantitative mineral analysis. Following transurethral catheterization of the urinary bladder and distention of the bladder with physiologic saline solution, urine and saline solution are aspirated into a syringe while an assistant vigorously and repeatedly moves the abdomen up and down. Dispersion of small uroliths throughout fluid in the bladder lumen facilitates their aspiration into the catheter and syringe.

Nonhematopoietic hepatic neoplasms (n = 25) were diagnosed in 21 cats during a 5.5-year period. Thirteen of the neoplasms were benign bile duct adenomas and 12 were malignant, 6 of which were bile duct adenocarcinomas. All cats were greater than or equal to 10 years old, and 14 were male. We have examined the effects of a single injection of naloxone (5 mg/kg, i.v.) in cats with cerebral ischemia produced by transorbital occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2) was estimated based on measurements of arteriovenous (A-V) oxygen difference. Six cats were treated with naloxone 30 minutes after occlusion and 8 were treated 2 hours after occlusion. Between October 1986 and September 1988, 37 cats with moderate to severe idiopathic myocardial failure (dilated cardiomyopathy) were evaluated. Four visually deprived cats and four controls were tested in reaching for food from a cage. In each trial the animals in the groups responded immediately after unscreening the cage. However, in reaction time of forelimb extension the deprived group showed proportionally fewer responses with shorter reaction time than the control group.

A coagulopathy attributable to a deficiency of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX, and X) was diagnosed in 3 Devon Rex cats. Idiopathic feline vestibular syndrome, a peripheral vestibular deficit of unknown cause, was diagnosed in 75 cats at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital from July 1975 to October 1984. Review of the medical records of these cats indicated that the syndrome was seen in more cats in July and August (P less than 0.001) than in other months. Clinical signs included head tilt, ataxia, rolling, rotatory or horizontal nystagmus, and occasional vomiting.
