Impact of Nutrition on Embryo Production in Cattle: Mechanistic Insights.

Reproductive efficiency in cattle is critically dependent on embryo quantity and quality, particularly in assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs such as superovulation, embryo transfer, and embryo production. Nutrition is a key determinant of embryo yield through its regulatory effects on metabolic signaling, ovarian function, oocyte competence, and early embryogenesis. This review synthesizes the current evidence describing mechanistic links between nutritional status and embryo production in dairy and beef cattle across both in vivo and in vitro systems. Energy balance, protein supp…

Safe and Stable Germline Transmission of MSTN Mutations in Cattle.

With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, sustainable livestock production is critical. Gene editing of the myostatin (MSTN) gene represents a promising strategy to enhance muscle growth in cattle. In this study, MSTN-mutated founder (F0) cows were used to generate F1 offspring via ovum pick-up, in vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer. Four F1 calves were born, all confirmed to be heterozygous for the MSTN mutation. Long-term monitoring showed normal growth and no visible health abnormalities. Whole-genome sequencing identified SNPs, INDELs, and structural variants, …

Borrelia theileri in ticks and cattle in a Caribbean area of Colombia.

Some species of the Borrelia genus can infect animals, producing clinical signs and resulting in production losses. Borrelia theileri is the causative agent of bovine borreliosis and is transmitted by hard ticks, primarily Rhipicephalus microplus. The aim of this study was to detect B. theileri in R. microplus and cattle in some areas of the Córdoba department in Caribbean Colombia. In 2021 and 2022, ticks and whole blood were collected from Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle in the department of Córdoba, Colombia. DNA was extracted from 913 ticks and 122 cattle blood samples were collected. Sc…

Molecular Characterization of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex in Humans and Cattle.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Zoonotic tuberculosis (TB) remains a persistent public health challenge worldwide. It is particularly common in settings with close human-livestock-environment interactions. In Tanzania, progress toward TB control is increasingly threatened by multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), yet genomic data from regions characterized by pastoralist and mining activities remain scarce. This study employed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize M. tuberculosis complex (MTBC) strains circulating among human and cattle populations in the Manyara region of northern Tanzania…

Effectors and predictors of conceptus survival in cattle: What is next?

In cattle, the physiological process of switching from cycling to pregnant is complex. Ultimately, that process relies on endometrial luminal epithelial cells and is based on the paracrine context of the uterine lumen. Cells either release luteolytic pulses of prostaglandin F2 alpha to keep the animal cycling or respond to cues released by the elongated conceptus that block prostaglandin F2 alpha pulses to maintain luteal function and pregnancy. That process, however, is highly regulated and subjected to error that occurs in every 30 to 40 % of attempted bovine pregnancies. This review address…

Artificial neural networks to predict the presence of Neosporosis in cattle.

The prediction of bovine infectious diseases is a constant challenge as generally, only laboratory data is available not allowing the study of their relationship with each disease's risk factors. The diseases neosporosis and bovine viral diarrhea, which are present in Colombia, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, cause reproductive problems in cattle and generate economic losses for ranchers. Although there are mathematical models that can evaluate which cattle are susceptible to these diseases, these provide limited information, maintaining the need for a model that provides inf…
