BACKGROUND: Digit sucking is a common oral habit among many children, which involves placing the thumb/finger into the mouth, which can cause malocclusion in mixed and permanent dentition.
AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the RURS elbow guard in the management of thumb-sucking habits in children with intellectual disabilities and those without in terms of the mean duration of appliance therapy. The secondary objective was to compare the RURS elbow guard with an intraoral crib in healthy children (without intellectual disabilities) to manage the habit of thumb-sucking.
DESIGN: Children with i

AIM: To seek consensus on recommendations for the delivery of services to disabled children in England during future emergencies.
METHOD: Candidate recommendations were drafted based on our related mapping review and qualitative research related to experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iterative workshops with professionals and parent carers helped to refine the recommendations. A Delphi survey, rating the importance of each recommendation, was conducted with (1) parent carers of disabled children, (2) disabled young people aged 8 to 19 years, and (3) health, education, and social care pr

Pain in the lower part of the back is one of the most common chronic illnesses globally. This work aimed to determine the impact of the reinforcement of particular groups of abdominal and dorsal muscles on the loads exerted on the lumbar section of the spine in 30 mothers of children with motor disabilities. An optical Ariel Performance Analysis System recorded and processed the kinematics data of everyday activities. Tests investigating the effects of the strengthening or weakening of abdominal and dorsal muscles on loading in the lumbar section of the spine utilized the AnyBody Modelling Sys

SYNGAP1-related ID is a genetic condition characterised by global developmental delay and epilepsy. Individuals with SYNGAP1-related ID also commonly show differences in attention and social communication/interaction and frequently receive additional diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We thus set out to quantify ASD and ADHD symptoms in children with this syndrome. To assess ASD and ADHD, parents and caregivers of a child with SYNGAP1-related ID (N = 34) or a typically developing control (N = 21) completed the Social Responsiveness S

BACKGROUND: The incidence of any medical condition (e.g., sight, hearing, and speech problems, blackouts, chronic pain etc.) or disability (e.g., limited use of arms or fingers, legs, and feet, or other physical long-term health condition limiting everyday activities etc.) have been increasing among Australian children in recent decades.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed whether infant or child health characteristics might be predictors of subsequent medical conditions or disabilities in children in the first 15 years of life.
METHODS: Using time to event data of 5107 children, obtained from t

BACKGROUND: De novo variants are a common cause to rare intellectual disability syndromes, associated with low recurrence risk. However, when such variants occur pre-zygotically in parental germ cells, the recurrence risk might be higher. Still, the recurrence risk estimates are mainly based on empirical data and the prevalence of germline mosaicism is often unknown.
METHODS: To establish the prevalence of mosaicism in parents of children with intellectual disability syndromes caused by de novo variants, we performed droplet digital PCR on DNA extracted from blood (43 trios), and sperm (31 fa

This paper describes two programs using the recommended tiered approach - World Health Organization's (WHO) Nurturing Care Framework (NCF), viz., Early Childhood Champions (ECC) program and Child Development Aide (CDA) program delivered by Ummeed Child Development Center, a non-governmental organization in Mumbai. The ECC program builds capacity in community health workers (CHWs) employed by community based organizations in urban, semi-urban and rural areas to deliver the responsive caregiving and early learning components of WHO-NCF framework to all children (universal services) and those wit

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders. As an anti-oxidative agent, selenium plays an important role in human health. However, the relationship between selenium status and learning disability (LD), a common neurodevelopmental disorder, is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between serum selenium concentrations and learning disability.
DESIGN: Nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Children aged 4-11 years who have available data on serum selenium concentrations and LD (N = 1,076) fr

Functional visual perception significantly contributes to the child's development and consists of much more than just visual acuity and the visual field. It includes cognitive interpretation of visual stimuli and runs along the temporal and parietal pathways of visual processing. Central visual impairment (CVI) usually affects otherwise healthy children with often good visual acuity, whereas the multiply disabled visually impaired (MDVI) have visual impairment and multiple disabilities. In MDVI patients an ocular and/or CVI can be present. The examination of MDVI patients poses a great challen

BACKGROUND: Long term outcomes of children with neurodevelopmental disability are influenced by the condition itself, available health services and caretakers' coping ability to nurture the children which may be related to their beliefs and experiences. Most children with neurodevelopmental disabilities live in resource constrained settings. To inform design of contextually appropriate interventions, this study explored health workers' and caretakers' experiences in caring for infants with neurodevelopmental disability in rural eastern Uganda.
METHODS: A qualitative case study was carried out

AIM: To report disability and visual outcomes following suspected abusive head trauma (AHT) in children under 2 years.
METHODS: We present a retrospective case series (1995-2017) of children with suspected AHT aged ≤24 months. King's Outcome Score of Childhood Head Injury (KOSCHI) was used to assess disability outcomes at hospital discharge and at follow-up. The study used a retinal haemorrhage score (RHS) to record findings at presentation and a visual outcome score at follow-up.
RESULTS: We included 44 children (median age 16 weeks). At presentation, 98% had a subdural haemorrhage and 93%

OBJECTIVE: Children with a specific learning disability (SLD) have deficits in social and academic competence and executive function (EF). In this study, we used the Model of Human Occupation to investigate the effect of peer-play activities on occupational values and competence as well as EF skills (i.e., behavior regulation and metacognition) in children with SLD.
METHOD: Forty-nine children ages 7-11 yr with SLD were randomly assigned to the peer-play and control groups. Outcome measures were the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function and the Child Occupational Self-Assessment (CO

BACKGROUND: In response to multiple United Kingdom investigations and inquiries into the care of adults with learning disabilities, Mencap produced the Getting it Right Charter which campaigned for the appointment of a Learning Disability Liaison Nurse in every hospital. More recent best practice guidelines from the Care Quality Commission included the need for all children's units to have access to a senior learning disability nurse who can support staff and help them manage difficult situations. However, little evidence exists of the extent of learning disability nurse provision in children'

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are at increased risk of secondary health conditions, reduced quality of life and life expectancy. Children with ID demonstrate low levels of physical activity in association with a higher prevalence of obesity, a modifiable risk factor associated with secondary health conditions including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Despite this, physical activity interventions addressing weight and weight-related complications in this population are limited. This study aimed to establish the feasibility of a school-based group exercise in

There is increasing awareness of the need to use Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) when assessing cognitive abilities in children. Since 1996, there has been an ongoing clinical study of the use of three PVTs with a consecutive series of 1,285 developmentally disabled children. In this study, we report on the results of these PVTs in children of many diagnostic categories. Failure rates on all three tests were very low. The mean scores on the effort measures in those passing the PVTs were extremely high. Failure on each PVT was found to be associated with a significant and widespread suppressi

OBJECTIVE: Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a putative neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by spatial processing deficits as well as social deficits similar to those characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Nonetheless, NVLD may be a distinct disorder that is differentially associated with the functioning and connectivity of the salience (SN) and default mode (DMN) networks that support social processing. Thus, we sought to assess and compare connectivity across these networks in children with NVLD, ASD, and typically developing children.
METHOD: Resting-state fMRI data
